  • Shot September 2022.
The first section opened on 10th December 2017.
Followed by the 'wire-free' section through the city centre on 27th July 2018. In the 'wire-free' section the capacitor banks are charged via 3rd rail in the centre of the tracks at each stop.
And then to the main railway station on 13th December 2020.
At the railway station, the trams go back to overhead power. A further extension to Lycée Bouneweg opened on the 11th of September 2022 a few days before we arrived in the city.
All public transport in the country of Luxemburg is free, as such, there is no ticketing system for the new tramway as there are no fares to be paid.

Looks nice, but really stupid. Let's invent and invest massively expensive battery system so we can avoid putting pup few wires on few miles of track... Talk about waste.
When nicely done, wires don't look that bad. Not enough to justify all the extra costs in my opinion...

There is a strong, and IMHO irrational, fear of overhead wires. The new tramway in my home city only got approval from the city municipal council on the condition that it be 'wire free'. They threatened to fight the project by any means available to them if not. Rather ironically, the Town Hall is the end of the wires so has a complex set of overhead termination poles and stay wires right out front. 'wire free' trams are spreading - because despite the extra cost, it's easier than fighting the 'no unsightly overhead wires' people and the vendors are more than happy to do the upsell.
