This is also my favourite Roxy Music song. It almost foretells the dark, atmospheric post-punk music of the early to mid-80s.

  • @jfergs.3302

An interesting, if rather dark track this. The brooding, long, intro that exudes tension, but you just know something else's coming. Then it bursts into a slow, almost dirty rock groove, with some crackin' guitar work. And that ending, the false fade out, before it reprises. Musically, it's clever stuff. And all the while BF narrates, almost whispering in that lilting style, on life, decadence, and his blow up girlfriend. This is fantastic stuff.

  • @paulockenden4278

The building towards the payoff is so incredibly done, Ferrys vocal delivery portrays the desperation of the songs character descending into the isolation of loneliness and obsession and yearning for the most precious of emotions being love. The second part of this track well its just incredibly free formed and sonically beautiful

There is a great performance of this on their live album Viva!, a really great live album you should checkout. Isn't it interesting the number of rock songs about sex dolls? The line "My breath is inside you" has always struck me as a brilliant piece of writing. What a great image!

Ferry's lyrics are perfect. He knows how to paint a picture. I've heard of people describing what he does as painting a song and I agree. These are probably my favourite lyrics he's written. I agree that you feel content with the instrumentals provided for the first part of the song. You're already put in this specific mood and then they just shred it to pieces. When its done you almost don't know what to do with yourself.

    • @laurahaskins123

Yes, this is Roxy when they were still in their arty/somewhat experimental stage. The song structure is brave and the guitar is probably Manzanera's best. Eno's presence remained for a while after he left the band but his loss robbed the band of their strangeness. Good one.

Hi JP. Dave from London. 1973 was a Pretty Good Year for albums, and that's an understatement. Topographic Oceans, Selling England, Piano Man, Aladdin Sane, Innervisions, Passion Play, Let's Get It On, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Band on the Run, Quadrophenia... and two Roxy Music albums, this one and Stranded. Magical song, probably just pipped by Bogus Man as my fave from FYP. Some really interesting background sounds, courtesy of Eno, as you say, including the phasing in the reprise which was popular in the late 60s (as on Itchycoo Park by the Small Faces and Rainbow Chaser by the original Nirvana)

This would be a great soundtrack for something: this song, Be My Girl/Sally, Are Friends Electric, Fake Plastic Trees, Plastic Age by the Buggles. We're surrounded by plastic. It infuses our lives, gives us convenience, haunts our dreams. When you watch a film like Blade Runner, one of the things that is so compelling about that future is the absence of plastic. It's apocalyptic, but it feels authentic. Reminds me of Peter Gabriel's Lay Your Hands on Me too - "plastic flowers on the window sill, no more miracles, loaves and fishes, been so busy with the washing of the dishes".

So unique, Ferry was such a great lyricist. I do like the later material and his solo work too, but I really miss his inventiveness and unique inspired ideas of this period, his later work is so minimal and simplistic compared to this. Ferry packs so much into this song, and the clean but warm upfront vocals sound very confessional, like he's right next to you. The break and then into the soloing is thrillingly genius, one of Manzanera's best and Paul Thompson is maniacal on the drums, never ceases to give me goosebumps.

My parents divorced in the mid-70s and Dad moved to a Downtown highrise. Chrome and glass furniture, shag carpets wall-to-wall, digital clocks, glass fiber lamps with rotating colour wheels -- all the futuristic excess of the middle-aged man, lonely and filled with ennui. Some of those apartments even had sunken living rooms. A swimming pool on the Penthouse level, with saunas, and a 360 degree view of Montreal and Mount Royal.

Yeah, this song is kinda like VDGG if Hammill were jaded or something.
"Manifesto" is my favorite Roxy Music album. Check out "Trash", a two-minute ditty, or perhaps "Ain't That So". Guarantee you'll dig 'em.
After years of not making music Roxy Music put out an album called "Avalon", their most polished and accessible album. Some beautiful stuff on that album.
You really need to look into Phil Manzanera's other solo and collaborative work. "Phil Manzanera's 801 Live" is a phenomenal album, heavy on the Eno. Check out their cover of "Tomorrow Never Knows". Or just about anything else off that album.
801 also put out a studio album, "Listen Now". Do the title track from that.
Or, if you want to get a real taste of pure Manzanera he put out an album called "Primitive Guitars". Some heavy s**t on that album.
    Your plate is full.

This is a great trance type song , but the content is about his purchase of a blow up sex doll for company , relating to the fact that the surrounds di nothing to Help his heartache. Bryan’s Vocals are totally unique, there has never been anyone who sounds like him and the original band were all incredible musicians. Reminds me of my high school days in Paisley. Scotland.

IIRC the first part is the last track of Side 1 of the vinyl album and the second part is the first track of Side 2.

I got a very early VdGG "haunted castle" vibe at first also. Could simply be about how empty success can feel sometimes. So many celebrities get caught up in addiction for example.
BTW FYI SW still seems to be down in the US.
    Stay the best Justin! :-)

I'd love to see a reaction to 2HB, it's one of my favourite songs of theirs

Only the first 2 albums are like this. The third album is perfection, every track a gem (inc. Mother of Pearl). Then they changed and became a band that targeted the singles market, becoming more and more commercial. It coincided with Brian Eno leaving the band. He left during the recording of, or shortly after, the 3rd album

The third album "Stranded", considered their best by many, including Eno, was made AFTER Eno left.

@@lashedbutnotleashed1984 Yes, I'm aware he left. He does not receive any credits but was still present on some of the tracks. Eno was the real creative force. Ferry got the credit.

@@happilyeggs4627 Eno, the creative force behind Roxy? That is simply ridiculous. Bryan Ferry wrote ALL of the songs on the first two albums, with very little or no input from Eno. I would hardly call that being the creative force. Bryan Ferry was the creative force, with Eno just adding some synth noodling and a few backing vocals.
Even Eno himself said that Stranded was his favorite Roxy album, even though he had nothing to do with it. No, he was not present at all on "Stranded." By then he and Ferry were at odds with each other and did not communicate. Ferry had gotten sick of Eno's ideas to make the band more electronic. That would have been a disaster.

This was released in 1973. And to get an idea of how ahead of it's time it is. The poo charts were dominated by showaddywaddy Garry Glitter and the Sweet

Excellent analysis as always. Really enjoy your channel. Please consider doing a full album listen of their album "Siren". I love Roxy and it's my favorite. It starts with "Love is the Drug" and doesn't let up. Many different moods and the songs blend into one another and the sequence of songs is near perfection. It would be one of my "Desert Island" albums if I could only take a few albums to listen to for the rest of my life. It's amazing! On a totally unrelated note. When can we expect the remaining tracks from David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust" album? The remaining songs are all classics and it's been awhile since the last one. :)

Mr. Ferry was likely referring to his girlfriend and model on that album cover Amanda Lear.

No one in Roxy Music was rich at this early stage but even so maybe Ferry was considering the emptiness of fame and wealth. Or the grass is greener aspect of thinking a dream home represents something idealized when it is just like anything else. Loneliness or isolation can and does exist in all environments including dream homes.
