"I want to see what I can give to the world which it hasn't got, and I can only discover what it hasn't got if I talk to everybody and see what is missing." Brilliant.
Thanks Mr. Zeldin. I just wrote this in my blog today: Mind, To what extent will you go to retain your hegemony, Do you ever care that humans die, In the name of your invented thoughts. Do you feel remorse, You have a gigantic belly, And you keep asking for more; When will you stop? Is stop death? Or is that life itself. The Perpetuation of the thought process, Through humans, Is this realisation of any use, to life ?
I really love this, but i don't know how to enact this practically. How do I begin these conversations? How do I connect across bounds when people are so uncertain? How do I rephrase the way I approach conversation to move forward in this?
Good question. We can just try. I started some time ago a series of dinners at my home with people that did not know each other. Is was quite interesting. I am thinking about doing it again, this time a bit more "professionally". Perhaps with what Tehodore Zeldin calls "conversation menu". We'll see...
Couldn't agree with you more. But I was an 18 yr old undergraduate in Christ Church 1973. And "Historical Geography" was the most dry, boring, course for the prelims I have ever taken. You taught it at St. Anthony's.
There are more tools for practical use. Discover your self by your mistakes. You think this jokes you are telling are just jokes? Look at videos of your childhood and you pretty much discover, that no thing really changed much in your character today since then. If you have the courage to stand up and break the circle of repetition (if you are one of this few people) than you have to change yourself painfully. That's where MAYBE good stories come from, these you can recall and further strengthen your character, your body, your skills and what ever you are going to change. Painfully, and you might never get used to it. Have a hopefully nice life!

Simply a phenomenal job, Mr. Zeldin.
A brilliant discussion on relations of self with others and society.
Very interesting,thank you very much...
Charming little man, with big, worthwhile ideas. I like him, he has a firm hold on reality and what we need going forward.

Excellent point, an idea is all well and good if we can apply it, both individually and collectively.
