I hear so many Catholics saying they're aiming for Purgatory but as St Kolbe said we need to aim higher because we may just as easily wind up in Hell with such a paltry goal. We need to be aiming to do God's will at all times...well...God doesn't want us to go to Purgatory either, not just Hell. We also need to be going to Confession regularly, even for venial sins and daily Mass if at all possible. I pray 6 Rosaries a day and also the Chaplet of Divine Mercy with a church group after Mass. I told my wife God is allowing us to do our Purgatory here on earth by way of my son' Sean's death from Depression in 2018. It's far better to do our Purgatory on earth than in the hereafter.

I am gonna be honest...I was born Catholic but have been away from God for most of my life but had a “calling” after my beloved mother’s death. By the grace of God, He awakened me and I realized that I was a horrible person. Oh, the sins I have committed! It hurts me so deeply that I offended my Creator, and I have not truly loved and been charitable to my fellow brothers and sisters(people in my life and strangers that I’ve encountered). I love God more now and am striving(maybe not as radical as He would like) to be mend my ways. But....it is really hard for me to overcome certain sins of impurity now and sometimes I would just deliberately do it as if I was not in control. Afterwards, I would feel soooo awful and guilty. I pray God would help me rid of my demons because I am tired of disappointing Him. I know guilt is not from God. I definitely feel the devils are working overtime to make sure that I stumble. I keep getting up though, but I’m worried that God might have given up on me. I know I should not say this of Him...but I would be lying and that’s another sin. If I deserve purgatory(assuming I manage to avoid Hell), then it’s for the best if He wills it but nothing would make me happier than to go straight to Heaven!! It is what is on my mind now. It is the only real treasure that I would ever have. Also, I think of Jesus all the time but I am still scared. Am I being a hypocrite? I hate sin but sin “loves” me. My only misery in this physical life is that I cannot be perfect like our Lord. I don’t even care about earthly gains as I used to. Please pray for me. Pray that I feel the joy, hope and trust that comes with loving God. God bless everyone and I love you.

Dear Donnie don't despair. Ultimately, God loves you evident from you having become aware of your sins. I presume your mom prayed for you dearly. All I would advice is to take up the practice praying the rosary everyday. You know the devil hates our Lady and the rosary is a powerful weapon against the demons. Try it out even if for one month and post the progress. One thing, it might be difficult starting so search for a youtube video, spotify audio...etc of the rosary being said and follow along. I will pray for you. Glory be to God.

I know I'm late, but I cannot recommend enough praying the Holy Rosary--It's completely transformed my life for the better, by the grace of God and intercession of Mother Mary. If you can, say all 4 mysteries a day. If not, then say 3 (Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious) mysteries a day. If you can't say 3, then try to say at least one mystery a day! Also, I suggest attending confession regularly, going to Eucharistic adoration to get that intimate time with Jesus, reading the Bible, and doing more research into mortal sins (and trying your hardest to avoid them!) etc. I've learned that the more time you spend with God, the more your relationship with Him grows and flourishes.

      Welcome back!
I spent the good part of my 60 plus years being, let's say, not the nicest person. I hurt so many people. Making a long story short, I changed. I went to confession and knew God forgave me. I could not forgive myself. I felt ashamed and embarrassed. I could not let it go. Praying one morning, I heard in my head, "My dying on the cross was not good enough?"

When I reflect about Purgatory, I realize the greatness of the mercy of God, how He exhausts every resource for the salvation of souls,; and Purgatory is one of the many proofs of this. Can you imagine if there was only a heaven and a hell? So thank God that there is Purgatory. I also agree with St Therese on trusting the mercy of God and how He can make it to where sin doesn’t persist in us and how He can take us straight to Heaven at rhe correct time in our lives, if we choose to cling to Him with all of our hearts and minds. For this we must be like unleavened bread, but If we willingly continue to choose to persist in sin, and don’t hand it all over to God, but we keep a small portion of it to ourselves, even if it’s the size of a yeast grain. Sin could take off like yeast, where we could no longer be unleavened bread anymore, because we choose to hold on to sin. This could easily buy us a sit in Purgatory.

How much I love the Triune God! I am 66 and never thought as Father expressed; trust in Heaven and Purgatory is a waste of time! I started Elem. School in 1959 so at St. Mary's Parochial School I received the Baltimore Catechism. The Catechism then - question 1. Q- Who made me? A. God made me. Why did God make me? A.-God made me to know Him, love Him and to serve Him on Earth as I do in Heaven. With 50 children in each room we learned everything by rote. Religion especially. Hell was very real to us!
And everyday from babyhood on you 'offered it up.' I still do. I was fortunate to be with my mother and mother -in-law as they lay dying 91 and 83 respectively. No fear, but a calm happy expecting heaven. I recited rosaries but also many Divine Mercies. I do hope I follow their good examples. St. Therese of the Little Child was a hugely popular Saint. She stayed a trusting loving child to Jesus. She even would tease Him.(He probably did not get this 'treatment ' often from other saints.)
What a wonderful homily Father gave! I also am a secular order Franciscan --OFS. I am grateful to have listened to it now and thankful for EWTN for being and for those posting it! Yes, Jesus I trust in You!

Dear Princess, I grew up with the Baltimore Catechism and can still recite the questions and answers too. We were taught about purgatory and I recited the "Eternal Rest Grant Unto Them" prayer often. When I asked priests how long do you stay in purgatory for this or that sin, they didn't know. My mother died in 2010 and is she still in purgatory? Jesus paid our sin debt in full. Since He is God incarnate, one drop of His blood is worth infinitely more than a million years in purgatory. Trusting Him gets you straight to heaven.

There is a prayer if said everyday, will lessen your time in Purgatory, if not eliminate it completely . The prayer is “ Prayer of Reparations to Avoid Purgatory.” There is another prayer that Jesus gave to Saint Gertrude and he told her that every time it is said a 1,000 souls are released from Purgatory. “ O’ Merciful Lord, I offer thee the most precious blood of thy Divine Son Jesus Christ, in union with all the Masses said today throughout the world, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for the sins of the world, for the sins of the Universal Church, for the sins of everyone in my family as well as in my household, Amen.”

Too often at a funeral of a Catholic the priest canonizes the deceased person. What a disservice. The family and friends go home thinking the dead person is in heaven when they could very well be in purgatory. Please assume your family love one is in purgatory and pray for them, have masses said for them and suffer for them. If they are already in heave ask our Blessed Mother to redirect your pray, mass, or suffering to another soul that no one is praying for and in stuck in purgatory.

I recommend that you read about indulgences. You can get a plenary indulgence that can wipe out all temporal punishment. A plenary indulgence remits sins through the merits of Jesus on the cross and the merits of the saints. The Church offers a plenary indulgence for many different things and partial indulgence you just have to make the intention to gain the plenary indulgence before you say the prayers. For example one rosary is granted a plenary indulgence when said in Church or with family look up the rest of the examples in the official manual for indulgences. you have to satisfy the necessary conditions you have to receive the Holy Eucharist, confession, pray for the Holy Father and his intentions, and be detached from attachment to all sin even venial sin. Even if all these conditions are not met you still receive a partial indulgence this can eliminate a great deal of your purgatory if not all of it depending on whether your attached with the affection for sin. You can offer indulgences for yourself or a deceased loved one. Indulgences are given because it's a humble way on not relying on yourself but on asking for the merits that Jesus Christ won on the cross and the merits of the Saints. Look into indulgence there very important and hardly ever preached about.

Attend confession regularly, pray powerful prayers like the Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet every day, attend Eucharistic adoration to have that intimate time in front of Jesus, learn more about what venial/mortal sins are and try to turn away from all of them as best you can, try to read the Bible often etc...I believe in you. I am a Roman Catholic. In the Holy Bible it
    mentions about Purification,the Cleansing
of the Soul. This is believed in the Doctrine
and Theology of the Roman Catholic Church.
The Church calls this Purification,as Purgatory,a place where the Souls of the
Departed are cleansed before they go to
Heaven.I believe in what is said in the Holy
    Bible.
Our Lord Jesus will return in Glory and Power
to Judge the Living and Dead and not before
then.Jesus will decide who goes to Heaven
and who goes to Hell.To me,Our Lord Jesus
must at the same time decide who needs
Purification of their Holy Souls before he
allows them to enter Heaven. The church’s
teaching is that the Souls go for Purification
in Purgatory. As I said Our Lord Jesus will
Return in Glory and Power to Judge the
Living and the Dead ,and not before then.
Therefore when Our Lord Jesus returns,
he decides who goes to Heaven, who goes
to Hell, and also who needs their Holy Souls
to be Purified.(This is when Judgement is
made by Our Lord Jesus Christ).
We must have Faith,Hope,Love and Trust
    in Our Lord Jesus.
Jesus loves us and cares for us.He is the
Way,the Truth and the Life.He has shown
us the Way to Heaven. We are all Sinners
and Our Lord Jesus knows this.We are
    not Perfect.
Our Lord Jesus will Judge us through his
    Most Sacred Heart .

So let us bear fruits for our Father here on earth and not worry about purgatory.

Why would anyone go to purgatory? To be cleansed, for "nothing unclean shall enter [heaven]" (Rev. 21:27). Anyone who has not been completely freed of sin and its effects is, to some extent, "unclean." Through repentance he may have gained the grace needed to be worthy of heaven, which is to say, he has been forgiven and his soul is spiritually alive. But that’s not sufficient for gaining entrance into heaven. He needs to be cleansed completely.

Yes we can be purified here on earth. Purgatory is purification after when we die, ie sins we have confessed but have not made clean. No one can enter into heaven unless you are cleaned. If you reached Purgatory when you die it is a good thing that means you are guaranteed eternal salvation, but must undergo purification. Using the sacraments of the catholic church can shorten ones stay in purgatory. The saints and holy people have proven this.

First all people that go to purgatory will go to heaven and be there infinitely longer than they were in purgatory so it is infinitely good to be born. Hell and purgatory is god's justice and the nature of sin which is a rejection of God so hell is more of a respect of the person's choice. Sin is the choice to reject God and God will respect that choice. +CandaceWhite Hail Mary is in Luke, where she is referred to as "full of grace." If you can't derive prayers from the Bible, then you're being quite inconsistent. I'm trying to point out the inconsistencies of Sola Scriptura-based interpretations of the Bible. Sola Scriptura isn't in the Bible. Sola Scriptura is a heresy. The Bible clearly states that the CHURCH is the pillar and foundation of the truth. There must be a final authority for Biblical interpretation, and it CAN'T be the Bible, for that makes it contradict itself. Read the early Fathers of the Church, in the first three centuries. They are speaking of practices I see every day in Mass. I recognize the Catholic Church in these writings, which tells me that I am in the right place. You can't say that. You can't read the writings of the disciples of St. John and find Calvinism, or Lutheranism, or the Baptists. It isn't there. It is ludicrous to think that it was not until 1517 that God was able to get someone to interpret Scripture and set things right. It makes Jesus promise that the gates of hell would not stand against His Church void. It would mean Jesus was wrong and didn't know the future of His Church. It would mean He was just a man. You can't have it any other way. Either Jesus was correct, or He was not.

The Judaizer sect was taken care of in the Council of Jerusalem, in Acts. Jesus is now the embodiment of the Law, and everything goes through Him from that point on. He gave His authority to the Apostles, and they gave theirs to their successors. When you have a problem with "religion", you're actually saying you want to make up one that suits your desires. It doesn't work that way.

That is a bit of cherry picking from the Bible. It also says that in 1 Corinthians 1:18 , "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." or Philippians 2:12-13 "Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed-not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence-continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling," All of this points to salvation being a process not a one time event.

And tell me where in the Bible does it say that the Bible alone is the source of all truth? It says no such thing. There is no purgatory that Jesus Christ and the Apostles told about.
Hebrews 10:10-18 "And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.
The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says: “This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.” Then he adds: “Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.” And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.
The thief on the cross with Jesus Christ never went to an imaginary place called purgatory. Jesus Christ forgave him of his sins and he went immediately to Heaven when he died.
Luke 23:42-43 "Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
The thief didn't do works, was not baptized and didn't go to purgatory. The real Jesus of the Bible has the power to save those who repent of their sins and accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. The many false religions such as Catholism and Islam have different Jesus that does not have the power to save you. The Bible speaks about different Jesus and different gospels that are false and people easily believe what they are taught about them.
2 Corinthians 11:4 "For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted-you may well put up with it!"
The Catholic Church, Mormonism, Jehovah's Witnesses, Islam, Word of Faith and many others teach a false gospel and the Bible warns about them and how they will be cursed.
Galatians 1:8 "But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse!"
