  • In this video, we work on the next step in our series on the mobile coop by adding the wire mesh floor and some new paint (yes, I changed the color). I also detail the design we settled on in order to make the coop as light as possible se we could navigate our steep terrain safely.

    Gettin ready to expand our run a little bit from 5x6 to 11x6. Only have 3 birds currently, but wanting to get to 7 total. Got them originally for my grandson, but I'm enjoying caring for them and eggs of course.

    Greens feed has a bunch of wire. We had that problem last year. I love the coop. I have been looking a solution like this. Glad I’m not the only one needing to haul my chicks up these mountains. 😂

      I kept finding 25 foot rolls locally and I only needed 30 feet total. Hated to buy two rolls and have something else lying around.

    I am enjoying this video series. My next chicken coop will be on a trailer similar to yours, so I am getting lots of ideas. My plan is to use light gage metal studs with metal siding instead of wood framing to reduce weight.

    Nice build. Here’s an idea. Get some of that flex seal or bed liner type product and cover the beams that would be exposed to the chickens. It will keep them much better protected from the hot chicken droppings. Just a thought. Enjoying the progress.

    Oh no. I used that same wire on the bottom of our coup in hoop (just a warm dry box inside our little cattle panel hoop house chicken house) for 12 hens. I have not had good luck with manure going through. I think my mobile coup floor will have some wood chips and make the opening wheelbarrow height. I could be talked out of it yet. I do like the open bottom idea.

    We just use a Justin Rhodes Chick Shaw and we love it. It is small, and only holds 40 but it works right now. We are hoping to build one like that on the next year or so.

    a great idea is cover the wood with just wide enough plastic vapor barrier 6 ml or strips of house wrap to protect it from the acid chicken poo, and easy to spray clean

    It would add a tad bit of weight but possibly consider adding boards 12-inch on center the one-inch wire would hold up longer. I used the 24-inch spacing as that was the wire width and over time sagging developed, even with chickens. Overall I am a fan of this design and the overall size for the WV hills.

    Might be too late but have you thought about using Galvanized studs vs wood to cut weight on the walls and roof? 4 lbs vs 13 lbs per 8' stud or so. The downside, you'd have to buy them and the screws but that thing would be lighter to the point you'd worry it might blow away. lol Also, I'd beef up that floor if you plan to get in there and walk because you're not going to be able to walk normal hunched over to step on those few cross members and will sink in your wire mesh. Like the design.

    I like your design, but won't the rain catchment system in the back hinder your access to the nesting boxes for collecting the eggs? I think I'd put the nesting boxes on the side. Can't wait to see your mobile coop progress in the days ahead! Edit: Oops. I just went back and watched it again. I see that I missed the part about the tank being inside the coop. Interesting!

    • @RedToolHouse
      @RedToolHouse  3 роки тому

      I believe the gutter and downspout drop will be less that 12 inches and the nesting box door should be no more than 28 inches. That should allow my plumbing to go inside and to the tank that will be on the floor. That is the idea at least. We will have to see how it turns out.

      @@RedToolHouse this one was set up as a cotton trailer. Not sure what they where manufacture to be to start with. It has 2 separate axles and the front one has an axles upfront where the wheels can move so you can pull it around in all directions. 🤔 Wondering why you put plastic under coop this time while painting? I remember a long time ago in a forest far far away that someone sprayed red undercoating paint on a frame without any plastic on top of concrete. 🤔 Crazy thoughts I know.
