- Lianne La Havas no longer needs any introduction; her trajectory has been well documented. Her name has become synonymous with beautiful, soulful, emotive songs about heartbreak. Aged 22, her debut album reached number 4 in the UK album charts, was nominated for this years Mercury Music Prize and she can now count Stevie Wonder, Prince, Erykah Badu, Bon Iver and Jill Scott as fans.
Lianne announces the release of a two-part video with Noisey.com and Essence.com for singles "Elusive" and "Gone". Director Colin Solal Cardo (La Blogotheque) said of their partnership:
"I've been collaborating with Lianne for more than a year now, but working on this project felt like something completely new. Lianne's a brilliant storyteller, there's a true cinematic quality to her songs. When you listen to them, you go through all these emotions and narratives, like a collection of short movies. We felt like it was finally time to build a world around these songs, give life to these love stories and let Lianne actually become these characters. Be it a candid young girl falling in love, or a heartbroken femme fatale in the middle of the woods. I feel fortunate for the trust relationship I have with Lianne, it's something any music video director has to cherish because it's rare and precious. Ultimately, that's what allows an ambitious project like this one to exist."

This manifested oneness, is like a mirror's reflection, confirming a shared awakening of what has always been-an introduction to "self". How I long for the encounter of such hands.

I wish there were more examples of black people like this in the media. I was adopted and grew up in a predominantly white area. My best friend, who's like a sister to me, was also adopted. And besides the two of us, we were the only black people. We've mostly had horrible examples of black people that came from media. On top of that, we were constantly fighting against our stereotypes. I can't tell you all the times where someone has told me, "I'm surprised you like learning. You're like a white person." That's just messed up on so many levels. I've had multiple people try to tell me that, "You're not "black" you're brown." Because they think it's embarrassing to associate myself with black people.
But seeing this is so refreshing! I never ever see black people portrayed in media this way, and it's sad that I have to search on youtube to find it. But I'm glad it's reaching people of different ethnicities. Because with people like this, maybe one day I can say that I like artwork without being told that I'm white for a black person. I'm just so refreshed to see someone like her just being herself, and making good music because the media doesn't have many good examples of people our race (Or any minority), doing this.
Hive Atlas Thanks for this. I feel the same quite frequently, but comments like yours help keep me motivated to do what I love, whether or not that fits the stereotypical black schema.

Hive Atlas I came here to watch the beautiful Lianne de Havas but found an equally beautiful comment. I certainly share your sentiments which seems like a battle people of color are losing. I guess the lesson is as long as you know you are beautiful then nothing, not even the media can put you down.
Hive Atlas I take it you live in a small predominantly white racist neighborhood. Because in large cities like LA, NY... it's not unusual to see black people in position of power. Sure they do have their fair share of ignorant ghetto people, but they also have large educated black communities.
Being adopted by a person of different race must be difficult. Because you are most likely going to grow up in a culture that is different from your race, while at the same time not ever fitting in with your adopted parents race because of your color.
saucy05 It's not power that bothers me. It's that people aren't seen as people. Because of stereotypes, I'm expected to be only my stereotype. And I'm so tired of people assuming the worst of me because of how I look, or surprised when I'm not a stereotype.
And yes, I do live around a bunch of white racist people. But I also live around a lot of good people too!
Hive Atlas Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Images of black people in the media are slowly changing to be more nuanced. I grew up in a pretty racist city in Florida and I've been called "acting black". I now live in LA so I get to see black creatives all the time and I am grateful. Glad you found this. Much love.

Wow! She evokes a memory of "Sade'" yet more beautiful & with more range and a deeper presence! She's smooth and silky & raw all at once; so intensely intimate that I feel the unnerving need to look away. When she sings I feel it more than hear it. As I listen all my senses are set off; I smell the earth after hard rain and feel that the room is suddenly warmer. I cannot remember the last time I was so affected. I better go take a walk outside.
