When stripping wire partially remove the waste bit of the insulation and use it to twist the strands of wire as you pull it clear. This way you keep finger grease off the wire which makes it easier to solder.
Hold the wire you're stripping in snipe-nosed pliers and lever the cutters against them to strip the wire. This way you have more control and you're less likely to nip the copper core.
