I was literally looking at my phone's weather app earlier this morning, and I noticed it said that we were suppose to get 12 hours of daylight today. And I was thinking "that's impossible! The equinox is still several days away! How can that be?" Little did I know that you were going to post about this topic later in the day lol. Thanks for clarifying at a truly convenient time!
It's incredible how you are able to explain this correct in just 2 minutes, really really cool!
As a kid,, I remember my science teacher asking my class what day it was, and no one would answer. I didn't want to, but finally said that it was the fall equinox. I only knew because I noticed it on my calendar that morning, lol.
I replayed this 5 times and still not got the idea
@@laketahoeoverdose4387 That's not nice
Same
@NinjaWolfHybrid The Earth is closest to the Sun in early January and furthest in early July (these dates are slowly moving forward over a 23,000-year cycle), so the Northern Hemisphere currently has a longer spring and summer, while the Southern Hemisphere has a longer autumn and winter. The difference in solar irradiance is about 6% between these two dates, so seasons are currently less extreme than usual in the Northern Hemisphere and more extreme than usual in the Southern Hemisphere, though seasons are still less extreme in the Southern Hemisphere overall because the Southern Hemisphere has much more ocean cover and water changes temperature more slowly than land.
@@jamescook9125
Half of that still went straight over my head.
I guess I need pics and perhaps a bit more of a breakdown in the language being used. Such as words like solar irradiance, as if us plebs are automatically supposed to know what that is.
If I knew that, I wouldn't need to go to videos like this to try and learn things.
I got even more confused…😅
equinox: the time when there’s equal day and night WTF MIND IS ALREADY BLOWN WHY HAVE I NEVER REALIZED THIS (prob cuz ive never questioned it till 1:12am insomnia hit)
wait 0:29 hit and now im confused
I didnt know the word "equinox". Does that count?
"You keep using the word. I don't think it means what you think it means."
I think he does, If he's making a video about it
It's not a word it's a phrase.
+Jackie Montrose, go watch the princess bride and don't come back until you have a sense of humor.
Are the first two replies retards or.....
The video has been up for one whole hour and no flat earthers showed up yet?
DEM ERHTZ IS FRAT
man they are going to hate this video.
+Jörg Wessels
They're too busy voting for Trump.
+Brandon Hall Those would be the Obama acolytes.
+Jörg Wessels lol
With the spring equinox right around the corner, don't you think it's time you learned what the equinox REALLY is?
Is this because people don't know how to google "How to google"?
+It's Okay To Be Smart Good video
+It's Okay To Be Smart I prefer "Vernal Equinox" cause it sounds so much cooler.
So basically it's not equal day and night bc we define the beginning of the night differently than we do the beginning of the day..
It's amazing how God created this.
0:55 how can the equator be perpendicular to the sun. Shouldnt it be the Axis of the earth that is perpendicular to the line drawn from the centre of the sun to the earth?
PJ
A vocabulary oops.
Great, so equinox is actually exactly what I thought it was. Thought there would be mythological or cultural twist, like a "it's actually the day that the French used to pluck their chickens, which people tried to time with the time when the earth's equator was directly facing the sun" type twist. Still love your videos, guys. Keep 'em comin'!
“Is today the equinox?”
“No.”
“Then what is it?”
“Today is your luxy day.”
Thank you. I learnt something.
I remember watching a TV show similar to this that explained how our entire solar system worked. Can’t remember the name though.
It was all graphics and just a voice over. And less than 5 minutes.
Sigh. Simpler times.
I feel Smarter Every Day when I watch this channel.
It's okay to feel that way.
1:02 No no no no, no! I am not falling for this again! "But, the sun's there!!" - "NO. NOT THERE. Mirage..."
Title is incorrect; The Equinox is exactly what I thought it was.
+Skeletor Jopko Congratulations! You have graduated to PBS Space Time.
Skeletor Jopko
This is 6th grader stuff
Wow your better than NASA
Lol
I was going to post the same thing. Turns out the equinox was just what I thought it was. Is this video meant to be click bait or did people really think the equinox meant perfectly equal day and night??
This is the best concept. Short and concise. Would you please make a 2 minute video to clearly explain to all these earth flat dreamers that the earth is NOT flat and yes a nice ball! Thank you. Trying to convince my best friend to wake up... Thank you so much
"When the earth's axis isn't pointing towards or away from the sun, at all". Hmm, I think you'll find, Joe, that the earth's axis is pointing in the same direction all year 'round (apart from the minor polar motion) - it's how and why we get seasons. Your statement would make more sense if the animation had been from a view above the plane of orbit, rather than the side view (with it's incorrect moving axial positioning) as shown.
I was always just told that the equinox is when the equator points directly at the sun. that's not wrong. why complicate?
Yeah. The Equinox is one of the most overated Skrillex songs, that's what it is
Lol
+Billy Mays such fanboy much wow
Frick off m8, First of the Year (Equinox) is gr8.
This is so refreshing as I try to read through Copernicus’ work
Equinox is a Styx album released in 1975.
The song 'Midnight Ride' is included.
Turns out it is exactly what I thought it was.
Let me guess, we cant use the definition for sunrise&set "when the sun is half dipped into horizon" for practical reasons.
This is kind of a well placed video cause I just learned about Equinoxes today
That last bit on Acceleration experiments and observing a distinction between Acceleration and Gravitation is very important.
Gravity is a force, it at least produces waves, and Acceleration is merely a symptom that can be made by more forces than just gravity,
In a long term space flight, would a fake Gravity chamber being rotated at high speeds be enough to protect the samples from low gravity effects?
Yes, it is what I thought it was. That said, people should really stop using the outrageously elongated elliptical orbit in illustrations. It perpetuates the notion that we have winter 'when we're further away from the sun'. Minimum distance of Earth from Sol is roughly 146 million km, whereas maximum is only 152 million km...hardly enough of a variance to warrant these ridiculous egg-shaped orbits we see so often. Bad scientist!
+Mid-Nite Drive-Thru True. Most people who are not in science and stuff believe that. But it's kinda hard to see for people who are not at all in geometry
Mid-Nite Drive-Thru
Nothing wrong with scaling small variations for discussion purposes.
And everything wrong with over exaggerating by scaling.
The earth's elliptical orbit is marvelously close to circle.
Of course, seasonal timing with regard to distance from the sun depends on our hemisphere.
Mid-Nite Drive-Thru, I thought the illustration was helpful and easy to understand, but it could've used a "not to scale" disclaimer. You're right that not to scale illustrations cause confusion.
@@stevenelliott216 great video, but have to agree, specially when you show the difference of days between summer and winter solstices towards the following equinox and, for someone less keen, it would feel as though the actual time difference, in days, would be pretty relevant, which it isn't - 2/3 days at most. You can add that as a disclaimer to the video description. Would probably help someone! Apart from that, great video.
I recently read that to make yogurt you have to add a little yogurt to your mixture. And this brings in the question in my mind which I hope you can answer; how was the first yogurt made and how people discovered it?
Congratulations on ... the most off topic question :-)
Good question, actually. I'd guess that back before modern refrigeration and cleaning some of it happened to be exposed to the right bacteria, but I haven't looked into it.
yay, my birthday is on 20th on march, whole world celebrates it!!
OK, as long as we're nitpicking, your video should be titled "The Equinox isn't exactly What You Think It Is", because it's still pretty much what I thought it was.
That said, it is still interesting and valuable content!
please add more about this!
I knew summer lasted longer than winter!
L. Catlett-Tetzlaff , you don't live in Ireland, do you ?
The Equinox is exactly what I think it is.
The day I get pissed off that my days riding my motorcycle are getting too short, and start watching way, way too much UA-cam. Summer, here I come.
I HATE when the days get shorter. Its like the sun is saying "ok, put the toys away (outdoor tools). playtime's over" and I'm like "I don't WANNA go inside".
I'm so glad your channel was suggested to me! I'm looking forward to seeing your other videos!
that was so unfamiliar that nobody but a few can even dislike this video!... nice video and like by the way... keep it up!
On the Equinox I saw the first geese of the year. Coincidence or conspiracy?
The geese are conspiring against you.
Of course the length of day also changes depending on your height, so if you have a tall enough building, you can experience more than 2 equiluxes in a year.
Also anyone know of an equilux calculator?
After the hottist February EVER here in Oz I wish winter was comming but I don't think we will get one in 2016
This video tells the truth because a few days BEFORE the 2019 Equinox, our sunrise in LA was 7:05am-7:05pm. Now on the actual Equinox it's 6:56am-7:05pm.
1:08 the sun is a disk? you trying to 'tilt' the flat earthers? hehe
Thank you
I wish the channel was still called “itsokaytobesmart”
Why did they change it?
Very nice explanation.
This dude just broke my brain
Enjoyed this.
I was in error.
(The earth is an ellipse?)
Earth's orbit around the sun.
Did he say it wrong?
@M Detlef I agree.
Just messing around.
So it turns out the equinox is exactly what I thought it was.
jokes on you I didn't know what the fake equinox was and I only split my season in 4 for aesthetic symmetrical pleasure
There are many definitions of Sunrise, Sunset, and morning & evening twilight.
CIVIL, NAUTICAL & ASTRONOMICAL
They all vary about the "height" at which the sun must be at for Sunrise(set) to be official.
CIVIL = 6 degrees below the sensible horizon
NAUTICAL = 12 degrees below the sensible horizon
ASTRONOMICAL = 12 degrees below the sensible horizon.
+GoPro Flying nice, you try to sound smart mate xD we all know you googled this haha
+Chris Cameron I actually teach airline pilots for a living, so ...no I didn't.
you just blew up my mind
Equilux 👌🏼
I live near equator, Everyday is equal
1:45 this proves why Winter is so painfully long. haha *help us*
And here I was thinking the Equinox was a Nova-class starship.
You explain quite well 👍👍👍😁
that's some great editing! thanks for the video!
"I need every bad bitch up in equinox, I wanna know right now if u a freak or not, oh lorrddd"
I just finished reading that fact in a Neil degrasse Tyson book, I'm really thankful you did a longer graphic explanation.
I'M EAQIN NOXBERRY!
"as sure as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west". There's a whole 20 minute video right there. Short version: True everywhere on the Equinox, but not true anywhere rest of year.
I love this show
just awesome thanks man
I wish you had told me this before I arranged the 10 ton stones.
Is there a day that has equal daytime/nightime that does not necesarilly mean the equinox. Or does it just not happen.
Thank you.
Hey Joe! Great video man! Keep it up!
today was the equilux in chicago!
How the Sun appears on the horizon seems irrelevant. The horizon varies due to mountains, trees, cities and other obstacles in your line of vision. Does the equinox change dependent on whether you are in the mountains or on the plains?
This is semantics. Quibbling. Most of us would rather have the year neatly split into fourths.
pls make a video about negative refraction
Equinoxe is a great album by Jean Michele Jarre.....equinox really doesn't get things going around here, Mile High, Spring doesn't show up until after Mother's Day and Summer comes in about 15 minutes after that and hangs until October, Autumn hits and Winter sits in from Hallowed's Eve until Mother's Day. it's the mid-Summer and mid-Winter that make things interesting. April comes to visit in January usually for a few days or a week, and January reciprocates in April. And in Summer we've been getting out of the ordinary Fry Days, not the good kind that end the work week, (Fried-A, because your A$$ is fried by that end of the week)...Fry Days that soar over 100F and just frys all the flowers and leaves right on the stems. we're used to Every Afternoon Rain Showers with Thunder and the occasional tornado. not Azrionia Frying at Mile High. Equinox is a Very Good Reason to throw a Bigg Whoopin' Party, 2 times a year!
Temp in the Philippines now is 37°C. Is it because of the equinox?
Another curious fact, during the summer solstice, here in the UK we don't have night, instead we have twilight.
And druids.
Can it be said that time moves slower when we are further away from the sun than at the closer point of the elliptical orbit of earth? As you mentioned in another video that the farther we are from source of gravity the slower time goes or was it the other way? 🤔
I prefer endless summer because you get to do a lot of surfing.
Funny that this ends with "sure as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west". Depending on your latitude and the time of year, the sun can actually rise northeast and set southwest, not due east and due west! A fun fact
days an nights used be counted and sun up to sun down. sun down to sun up so there would be times u felt they we're equal
i really dont understand anything..during summerwe r near to sun and in winter we are far from sun but the diagram at the last made me confuse sir...plz explain
spaceplace.nasa.gov/seasons/en/
Earth speeds up....acceleration yeah yeah.lmao
Why wouldn't we consider sunset to be the entire event from when the disk of the sun touches the horizon until it is completely gone? We do say the sun is setting don't we? For that matter, sunrise would be looked at the same way. So if you factor in the event itself, you would average the two or just take the measurement at 50% coverage. Just curious.
Its funny I am a flat earther however this year September ... The equinox happened on 26th ... Which is right in line with what you said however almost three and a half days behind and I guess like you did say we could be slowing down in orbit but I think there's more homework that has to be down here .... Time and date.com it .
Great graphics!
March 20th marks the Persian New Year in the solar calendar!🤩🤩
I now proclame that every science facts taught in elementary school was bunk.
more for this subject! 😆✨
How do determine when is the equilux?
Awesome video :)
Wait, but who said the equinox is that thing about the Earth's axis not pointing towards or away the Sun? The etymological definition is the day(s) in which day and night last pretty much the same amount of time (from our perspective). That doesn't mean it's a determined day of the year. It can move. And it's not necessarily the same for every latitude.
If you're gonna go with another definition, you should probably tell me why I should accept it, instead of just saying I'm wrong.
"As sure as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west", but it doesn't most of the time, it only does if it's the equinox, or if you're on the equator.
Whoa!
Mind blown!
We want some biotech things, gene silencing, human cloning, designes babies etc plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!!!!!
i didn't know what an equinox is, but now i do. so it is what i think it is
Science isn't what you think it is. The earth orbit is only 1.7% off from circular not 15% like displayed.
You're right. It should've had a "not to scale" disclaimer, but still a helpful diagram for the point being made.
Lol you got that last quote from GOT
Sonny Moore- Equinox
God his hair is perfect
That's incredible I mean sooo incredible♥️♥️☺️☺️♥️♥️
Nice
All I know is that the equinox means no leg day which is every day
