Made to parade was my leat favorite of the album, its growing on me tho, the final part of the song is amazing, it's what makes the song unforgettable. I love the album too, it's good from start to end, and it has no duds. I've been thinking about it a lot and I'm pretty convinced it's the most consistent album of their discography. Even songs for the deaf had a couple of songs that are not up to the greatness of the rest of the album. But this album is undoubtedly great, every song and every minute of it.
Songs for the deaf has no weak songs at all, even ones I didn't like have grown on me and are no some of my favourites like Do it again and Another love song
Made to parade and time and place are my fav tracks too! The honesty of the lyrics and the brutal and uncomfortable production has really set this effort high up imo.
this video deserves a lot more views, you speak from the heart and from your own experiences, that makes us connect with your opinion way better and I really appreciate the humble honesty. I completely agree with you, this album has taken its place among the very best this band has ever created, and you explained the reasons why perfectly, keep up the good work, good sir.
I don't know if anyone said it by now, but all of the music couldn't have been recorded simultaneously. Homme said in an interview the instrumentals themselves were finished early and it took him over a year to lay down the vocals. But I do agree that the songs feel like they were recorded at the same time, maybe this is true for the instrumentals.
Made to Parade didn't hit that hard on the first few listens for me, but hey, I have a sneaking suspicion it's one of those queen's tracks that grows on you. Will give it another couple of spins. Thanks man, great vid. 👌
At the QOTSA show in Queens, NY made us choose. Made To Parade or Time and Place… I and most folks at the show voted for Made to Parade!! 😄😄😁 So that’s what they played!
Man when you said that Time & Place is a driving song I legit started laughing with joy. Really love driving to that song. As an only QOTSA fan in my posse im really glad to hear most of my unexpressed thoughts verbalized in a youtube video.
For me, nothing can match the opening of "Emotion Sickness" (and the sustained kick thereafter) but "Made to Parade" is a close second, thanks to the lyrics
i love that in both music and lyrics, made to parade and peephole are dressed up as society/system songs, but are really still about him personally breaking free from chains and finding himself again
This band just gets better with time, their past three albums are fucking phenomenal and personally I’d take them all over Rated R, Era, Lullabies and self titled
My first listen to the album, I didn't think much of it as compared to the previous albums and I was ready to place it toward the bottom of my favorite QOTSA albums. Subsequent listen through have revised my opinion to a degree. I think now that the album is loaded with great songs destined to be classics for the band, but there are still other songs that don't quite land for me like Sicily (KIND of), and Straight Jacket Fitting. Time and Place was my dark horse favorite because of how that opening rhythm starts and then you get completely thrown for a loop when the drums come in and it becomes this fun, disjointed polymetric song that really grooves hard when your brain finally lines everything back up. That tier list at the end of the video...I'm going to have to differ with you on that one, "Like Clockwork" is absolutely S tier and "Villains" is A for me because it has one of my absolute fav QOTSA songs, "Feet Don't Fail Me Now". ITNR is an A for me, not quite an S in my opinion because of how it had to grow on me a bit before I really understood how good it was.
Time & Place and Made to parade are my favourite too. I thought that i was the only one thinking that they stands out from the rest of the album, even from the singles
Ahhhh Made to parade... i lost the count how many times I've listened this song! Its brilliant! For sure is the best song of the album in my opinion and I think 4th of all.
Wow, Lullabies to Paralyze is actually underrated. It’s my favorite Queens of the Stone Age album. In Times New Roman is an incredible album; agree with that one sitting in S tier.
Great review,... and I totally agree with Made to Parade. I can't stop listening to it. The end is such a glorious release... I hope they release the version where it doesn't fade out (hoping that they jam it for another 5 minutes lol). And Time and Space is my 2nd fave. Oddly, the most "QOSTA" track on the record, Paper Machete is my least fave... mainly because it sounds obvious compared to the rest of it. I love the old stuff and the Nick era (seen them on every tour since the start) but I think they've been in their prime for a while now, with this being the new height. This is just a fabulous record. Seeing them in SF in October and I can't wait!
Someone show this to Anthony Fantano. The guy totally took the record at surface level and made no genuine attempt to try to understand it. His review was a joke.
Keep up the Queens content man! I’ll subscribe with fingers crossed you’ll cover the rest of their albums 😁 That includes coming to appreciate Fortress and Fairweather Friends 😜 jk x
while a focused listen can be great, what always bring an album around for me, is when its a background play while working or cleaning or similar. and with that, I find Sicily to be the song that called out to me from out of distraction as my first love of the album... oddly not seeing much love for it
Totally agree about the album - tho I'll take Straight Jacket Fitting as the best track. My favorite band of all time keeps killin' it! PS. Love to see Rust Cohle driving down the road, trippin', to "Time And Place" 😉 I gotta agree with commenters in the video - I'll defend "Fairweather Friends" to my dying day! 😁
Something about how the album is mixed rubbed me the wrong way. The first track just hits like a solid wall of sound, and not even in a fun way. I feel like I'm getting plastered against a cinder block wall, the sound is impenetrable and hard to make out. The other Queens albums feel like they envelop you and take you for a ride, this one grabs you by the waistband and gives you an atomic wedgie until around Time & Place when it gives you a chance to breathe and take in the album again.
What are you playing in the outro?? I've been listening to a ton of queens these weeks, all of the albums and can't tell for sure what song you are playing, sounds like un-reborn again and kinda like fortress too.
this album feels really sloppy, like each song was redorded only after 1 or 2 takes. so..... its gonna take some getting used to. but its good. i just need to digest it a little more. either way, the move to Matador is the best move they ever could have made.
Love the album, but at 4:32 the guitar on the right-channel has the same effect as nails on chalkboard to my ears. No kidding, a physical reaction. Only song I skip
I can totally see how it would grate people. It's a bit mosquito-y. Funnily enough I only really perceive it on low-quality speakers. When I use my headphones, it sounds better blended into the mix.
Happy to have experienced them when their 1st record was out. $5 at a local pub. No one knew them. Alfredo bashed the night out of that club. The reissue of it sounds nothing like the 1st pressing. A few good songs on their 3rd, mainly because of the skilled drummer performing, who should actually have remained a drummer. But their magic never re- appeared anywhere. Then a boot kick in some poor front stage photographer, and the descent continued downwards.
@@duhlike I know ... that's why I wrote : he should have stayed behind his drums. Honestly his drumming on the red album is outstanding. Just like Alfredo's on the 1st album. .... F💰💰 Fighters is a thing I never got to understand, from a musical standpoint. I think I like Wham's music better than that. I was with this guy until he said Made to Parade was the best song on the album. It's good, but saying it is better than What The Peephole Say, Time & Place, Carnavoyeur, Emotion Sickness, or Straight Jacket Fitting is just shameless contrarianism.
I believe that if you condensed the album into an EP and removed some of the less inspiring songs, it would be a 10/10. I listened to the album several times and I always find myself skipping Negative Space, Born to Parade, and Straight Jacket Fitting. On the flip side, Obscenery, Paper Machete, and Emotion Sickness are some of the "smartest" QOTSA songs. What the Peephole Say is also a banger, and more devilish and complex than other quick tempo QOTSA hits. I am really on the fence with ITNR.
Thanks for sharing mate, I love this take. I agree about 'What the Peephole Say' in particular. It feels like a better realized take on 'Head Like a Haunted House' from Villains.
@@yanyansenmusic I don't like most of the production on Villains, so Head like a Haunted house always sounded a bit thin to me. Peephole is like a remedy
Made to parade is my least favorite of the album. If it wasn't for the killer second half, I wouldn't like it at all. I get it, and what it's trying to be, it's just super irritating to hear marching band style music over and over on an album that is otherwise VERY VERY VERY repeat-binge-listenable. Made to parage is meant to be appreciated infrequently compared to everything else on the album. Its like trying to each too much prosciutto or mayonnaise or using too much creamer in your coffee -- its nice and bitter and sarcastic like a QotSA song is meant to be, but its too concentrated and too unctious to be repeated often. I listened to this album on repeat for several hours on a long drive and had to fast forward through the parade-y parts. I marched in the Macy's parade in highschool forever ago, as a swarthy band nerd. The song is fine - just not repeatable. Definitely not the best song on the album. Definitely might be the worst. Being the worst song on a Queens album still makes it a better song than most. Ive been trying to wrap my head around the album rankings, and its blowing my mind a bit. In what universe are any of the Queens albums a B tier? Were those rankings meant to be with an emphasis on "vs each other?" Edit: oh and Fairweather Friend has Trent Reznor in the background. You can hear him clear as day. That song hits so hard in the feels. Its amazing. I just dont see what's not to love about it... Definitely not the best track on the album, but "a clunker?" Wow. The ending sticks with me. "Gonna pray for rain again and again; Fairweather Friend". Such a poetic way to say "F U".

Absolutely love the new album, but I don't think anything will ever top Like Clockwork for me. In terms of compositional layering, texture, etc... I think the writing on that album was the highest level Josh will ever achieve. It's like he peered into the musical abyss and for a brief moment found the answers.
Saw them in February in Auckland, probably the best live performance I have ever experienced. They are a phenomenal band. Josh is a musical genius

Queens of the Stone Age are easily my favorite band of all time. Your videos about QotSA and Josh Homme are incredible and some of the best on UA-cam!
Thanks mate!
Same here... my favorite band of all time!
The album is personally a 10/10 because how soo relatable it is. Haunting and bluesy and yet feel like radio friendly tunes.
Time & Place maaaaan, Time & Place is something special
It's an absolute banger.

I love the breakdown in Straight Jacket Fitting. Homme slipped into the Lizard King for a while there.
Thank you so much for editing in that stank-face at 2:45 for Paper Machete. That sound is exactly what drew me deeper into the album.
These guys just don’t miss. Josh Homme the 🐐 for real.
