    I'd love to see a "version 2" on this. Bullying wedges and pushbots with the sheer dowforce of this thing is too fun of an idea to abandon it like that.

    Maybe you could use a small strain wave gear for your drive reduction? The cup in theory be either plastic or metal 3D printed, or even machined out on a pocket NC.
    I have avoided using one for some of my designs since I need the gearing to backdrive in case of power loss, so the axles aren't sheared right off, but with a small robot like this it would be perfect.

    huh...never thought of that little problem with magnets for downforce: when you get hit you stay still and GET HIT, almost as bad as being pinned on a wall.

    It seems like a fun class would be beetle and ant "sumo" where you don't allow any destructive weapons (spinners, blades, hammers) but allow lifters flippers, pushers and the like in a ring with a simple wall of a certain height around it, the goal being either toss or tip an opponent. It would make a monthly local competition more appealing since you would not be dealing with shredded parts after every match.

    • @themadscientest

      How this relates is that your design would be a great contender in that.

    With magnets there are two forces. One is the downward force you measured. The other force is caused by eddy currents. when a magnet slides on the surface of a conductor it causes heat in the surface and drag. There may also be drag from friction caused by the down force which would be the same as a weight. Try taking your magnet and sliding it on an aluminum plate. you will feel drag. There also will be repulsion pushing the magnet away from the aluminum.

    Could you put some sort of small internal system to raise/lower the magnets internally to adjust their effect on the arena below them? Raise them to move quickly, Lower them to take hits?

      @RobertCowanDIY  5 років тому

      they have dowsides. I've played with them and they're heavy, use a lot of power, and lose pulling force QUICKLY as you move them away from the surface. They need to be touching to work right.

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  5 років тому

      Yeah, I played around with electromagnets, but they have significant drawbacks. They use a LOT of power, are heavy, and need to be touching the metal they're being attracted to for best results. Even 1/16" away, they lose the majority of their pulling force.

    Hello sir
    I am big fan of your robots and your design strategy.
    I have doubt in selection weapon bearing used for 30lb, 60 lb and 120lb category.
    Which bearing should i prefer for a drum spinner with efficient performance in each category.
    I would appreciate if a short video you could make for selection of bearings according to weapon type and weight category.
    Otherwise can i have just short reply for bearing used for drum spinner in each category.
    Thank you.

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  5 років тому +1

      This is a very difficult question to answer. There are many types of bearings and many applications for them. You can always look at books like the Machinery's Handbook, it has a lot of information about what bearings to use.

      I got the point you wanted to state
      I studied lot of bearing types
      Now i am just confused between taper roller bearing and ball bearing..
      Which one should be the better one for drum spinner?
      Thank you for your guidance.

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  5 років тому

      @@ravirajinamke1363 Very simply, a typical ball bearing only supports a load in one direction. Think of a roller skate bearing (which is a ball bearing). It only supports a load in that direction, which could work for a drum. Tapered roller bearings support a load in axial and radial directions, meaning it could support lateral motion of a drum, as wall as the load around the drum. Does that make sense?

    I see promise in the design, but I'm not an engineer yet so take my word hesitantly.
    What if the tires were a few mm's taller and you added felt to the underside for it to more easily slide across floors?

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  5 років тому

      That could work. It would make the magnets less effective, but that's not a bad thing.

    • @Draconamous
      @Draconamous 5 років тому

      @@RobertCowanDIY Well with those laws of physics I understand that perfectly.
      But at that weight class of robots, and the strength of those magnets. The down force should still be enough to where they would not be able to do anything to you in theory. And the reduced friction may spin a positive as well.
      It could translate it to a stronger ram as well not having to battle with that down force right?
      Anyway just an idea. Can't wait to see what happened with your team at BattleBots. You vs lockjaw would have been a pretty sweet fight.
