Simon! You'll probably need to get a yukata custom ordered with Jun because they don't typically make them with sleeves long enough for guys as tall as you two lol
I'm happy that someone actually states out loud (from experience in Japan at that) that it's NOT cultural appropriation for a foreigner to wear a yukata or kimono. There is quite literally an industry BUILT on letting foreigners wear clothing as such, and SJWs with their 'cultural appropriation' screeching don't seem to understand.
Yes, yes, yes! For me, I am on the middle ground between having the freedom to wear what I want vs this "cultural appropriation" being spouted on the internet. It's only a matter of knowing the appropriate time/occasion to wear certain clothes like a kimono or something as common as a 3-piece suit.
+JNguyen As long as you actually _understand_ the bit of culture you're participating in then who gives a shit if it's not from your native culture. Spreading culture is a wonderful thing!
I am mexican and i think it is awesome to see foreigners in mexico wearing traditional mexican clothes because it just shows that even if you're not mexican you can see the beauty of other cultures and you want to experience it. People who find something like that offensive need to get a life. The only times i find it offensive is when stupid people use wear sombreros or ponchos as a costume on days like 5 de mayo and "celebrate" the day without even knowing what it is. The same goes with japan. A lot of japanese might be offended when they see a foreigner wearing a yukata as cosplay but i see no reason why they should. There are so many anime characters that wear yukata/kimono, so it makes sense that even japanese people wouls d make a cosplay out of it. As long as they are being respectful, i see no problem.

It's true was you say in the vid and the blogpost. When I went to Japan I went to a second-hand kimino shop and bought a yukata to remember my travels. I thought about the cultural-appropriation piece (I'm a woman of colour and studied poli sci, etc.), but I was so touched at how receptive and educational the experience was. I think the whole discussion about cultural appropriation is more appropriate where a community is a minority group that is disenfranchised/marginalized. It's a totally different context in Japan. In Japan the conversation on how their traditions are shared and progress is mostly an internal one where the benefits are felt and disseminated to others to their own benefit . The lady who was running the shop was so sweet and so excited that as a foreigner I was interested in Japanese culture. She helped me assemble the yukata, and even gave me a belt for free! I ended up also buying a quick-obi (the equivalent of a clip-on bow tie lol) and I love it! So I encourage anyone who is interested to go for it and enjoy! I look for forward S&M to learning through your TL;DRs as you learn first-hand about Japanese culture!

Unless you want to teach Simon how to do it, you should look into getting a pre-tied obi. Much faster and easier! I hope you have fun with your yukata Martina
Thank you again to +Basia Siemianowska for the Polish subtitles. You're lovely! And thank you to whoever did the French subtitles. Your name isn't showing up, but we appreciate the help. Thank you!
Because of you I rented a yukata when I visited Japan. The grandmas and grandpas who saw me stopped and took pictures of me and with me. I was overwhelmed by the praises they gave me. Best experience in Japan. I love how there are alot of people in Kyoto who wear this.
I went to buy a new yukata a while ago and one of the new staff asked if she could practice draping kimono on me, they also offered me to buy at discount prices. Even an old little granny who also worked there complimented me on how good I look. I just felt bad about my giant feet! One cm over the traditional 24,5 Japanese L shoe size. So.. Non-Japanese people who keep insisting it's cultural appropriation to wear kimono, I'd say heck no. Japanese people in general always seem thrilled when foreigners like their culture, especially the more traditional stuff. Just do your research, ask questions, share the knowledge and love. :)
so i am a bit of a traditionalist in terms of cultural things, and I am SUPER displeased with these modern yukatas. BUT!!!!!! i love Martina's yukata, and I love it because it is so unmistakably modern - no one will be confused on whether that's a traditional yukata. The ones that are using traditional patterns but not traditional colors (like red or pink) I HATE because they breed confusion. Plus the overriding purpose of a yukata is that it look cool (as in temperature) - Japanese summers are super hot and humid, and the Japanese do a bunch of things to exude coolness, like put up glass bells that make tinkling sounds. Like things should look cooling and refreshing so that you can at least get cool vibes even if you are in fact super hot and uncomfortable. And Martina's yukata is primarily a blue striped yukata, so it doesn't look hot and suffocating like those horrible red or pink yukata. tl;dr: Martina's yukata is Japanese cultural traditionalist approved!
I watched y'all's videos all through high school, and I haven't really kept up with everything since I started college. But Martina looked so cute in the thumbnail that I just had to watch this one!!! You're amazing, adorable, and always put a smile on my face :)
that cat yukata is straight out of my dreams. martina's yukata feels soooo much like it was meant for her, it looks amazing. so excited to possibly see her wearing it out :D
I went on a short exchange trip to Japan about six years ago and all the exchange students were given a yukata as a gift - mine is a somewhat more traditional-looking purple floral print, but the obi has little totoros on it and I love it so much ;w;
I love the one you picked, Martina! It's really fun, bright, colorful, playful, and stylish just like you! I absolutely love the colors; they go so nicely with your hair!!
I've been having such a bad day today and went to your channel to cheer myself up. I was so happy to see that you guys posted this video. It made me feel just a bit better. Thanks Simon and Martina ❤️ I think your hair and yukata match so well! The yukata fits your style.
I really am glad you guys brought up cultural appropriation. I think this trend of shaming people for it is counterproductive. We as peoples from different places have always adopted things from each other. This is how our cultures grow and evovle for better our worse. If all those Japanese fashion designers were shamed and ridiculed for appropriating clothing design from Europe, then we would not have such greats as Issey Miyake. If the Russians and French did not adopt ballet from the Italians, and mastered it and innovate on it, would we have Swan Lake?
Grandma won't tie your obi for you? The only way I survived was going up to random Obaachans and being like 助けてくださいませんか。And of course I'd end up with 3 or 4 of them scuttling around me, wrapping me up like a present!
OK sorry I commented before I watched the entire video. Yay for Grandma! Have her do it before a festival and she'll tie you up like a boss! Just be prepared, strangers will want to have their photo taken with you! It's fun though. :-)
My husband, my kids and I are all watching your channel! My husband (he's from Busan!) is catching up on a few episodes and my kids are rewatching your Mario cart episode! We love you Simon and Martina! I hope you guys can come to Seattle again!
+Titania Hoang but when u braid it normally the outer ends is the whole braid😅 well then I will just continue crying in my room trying to figure how to braidㅠㅠㅠㅠ Thanks anyway tho^^
In the japanese culture, it is very common to "recycle" ideas. If you look at visual arts, music and literature, you'll see that it's been centuries that ideas and stories are being used on and on! As an example, you can see the "genji monogatari", novels written centuries ago, still being adapt today and it is so cultural to do this that it is rare to see actual Japanese people who read the whole Genji. They recycled the original story in so many ways and so many times that the importance is focused more on the cultural aspect that the thing itself. So it's not really a surprise, with the big impact of current Japanese fashion, that traditional yukata shops are dying slowly. Personally, I find it very cool! Not that I don't like traditional yukatas, but resent ones represents the new generations more and it keeps the tradition more alive ! :)
Despite my deep love for cats and complete excitement at the concept of wearing them in yukata form, I honestly really love your colorful sailboat paradise yukata! Excellent choice, and you look totally adorable.
I just went to Japan for spring break and there was a stall to rent yukata so I got this beautiful black one with red yellow and green accents and my parents were taking pictures of me and all of sudden a crowd of people ( Japanese and foreigners) taking pictures and I was extremely shocked embarrassed and flattered. The best part was at first I was facing away from the people so when I turned around these two Japanese ladies were like HOLY SHIT But yeah i felt like a princess
If you guys made Spudgy and Meemers pattern fabric, I would be all over getting a yukata out of that. Or a purse. Or blanket. Or anything, really. That is merch I would buy for certain!
Oh the colour of the Yukata that you have chosen is beautiful it really looks good on you Martina. So sorry for Simon good idea not to get one in the drab colour not you at all Simon . Thank you very nice and informative video.
"He thinks you are so beautiful." That made me smile so much. ^___^ She's basically saying don't worry if you are wearing it wrong or what you look like because the person you love will think you look beautiful no matter what. This lady is so adorable.
Simon, there are tons of places in Kyoto that have awesome funky men's yukata, as well as many other amazing Simon-style shops. I highly recommend a special shinkansen day trip to Kyoto. I have a magazine from about 10 years ago that had a great shopping guide, I'll have to find it and let you know which shops were recommended. Martina, anata no yukata wa cho-kawaii desu!
Also, Ichiro-ya is an amazing online shop based in Japan that I have personally shopped with, and their selection and quality is amazing! www.ichiroya.com
+Simon and Martina Simon, have you thought about getting one of the solid gray or black ones but then paying an artist to paint a design on the back, maybe a tattoo style design??? Just a thought.
It's a lovely yukata! I'm not going to lie, at the end when you had put it on yourself I let out a "Oh girl, what have you done." It took me a whole summer to get it right. (I'm a little slow at learning some things) Once you get it down, I have a feeling you'll fall in love with wearing yukata. It feels so extravagant, but it's just as casual as a nice sundress and it's amazingly breathable.
Your 'kimono' picture isn't just a kimono, it's a furisode, specifically for official events, worn by unmarried women, signalled by the really long sleeves. ;-) Regular kimono have sleeves of the same length as the yukata. :D
I know you two probably will not be buying one any time soon, with your recent yukata purchase, but I think you should show us kimono! I am very interested to see the different meanings and styles, for married and unmarried women with the hair and such that you mentioned!
I know you guys are really busy with the FAPFAPs and WTATs and editing and whatnot, but I really like these TL;DRs as well - they're so few and far between now (;_;) Hounestly, I'm just really interested in the answers to a lot of little stuff. Like, I was born and raised in Canada and am living in Korea now, but I've made a ton of Japanese friends. I hit it off really well with them, but because we grew up differently I wonder about the little things. For example, do japanese people share water bottles? (like drink straight from the same one) etc. etc. Just little things like that that would help me make better friends with Japanese people - although I'll admit I hounestly haven't had a problem with that so far n_n All the ones I've met are really great.
We absolutely want to do more TL;DRs but we wanted to get to know Japan first before we can talk about a topic. We only do a topic once we feel comfortable about all our opinions. :)
You look gorgeous, Martina! You picked the perfect Yukata. The colors complimented your skin tone and hair and, heck, it is just so perfectly Martina! I hope you can find something that works for you, Simon; so you both can wear your Yukatas to one of the summer festivals!
That Yukata looks awesome! Full of bright and estatic colours, it really suits you! Personally, I would get a subtle mint colour with baby pink polka dots!
+Fredde jpg it's gonna happen, I know. Heaven forbid we wear a Yukata while living in Japan, and our neighbour loves it, and try to do a video teaching people about its significance.
Simon and Martina I find that people part of the culture one tries to experience, are usually happy about it. it's a shame people cant tell the difference between celebrating other cultures vs appropriating cultures in a disrespectful way. the Yukata Martina picked looks great! such an awesome print and totally suits you! You should make Simon get a fundoshi! ahahhahaahah
+Simon and Martina Cultural Appropriation only applies when someone/a people takes something from a culture and pretends it's their own. You guys did such an amazing job at explaining Yukata and showing different sides of Japan. :D So I'd happily friendly 'argue' with anyone that this is a great example of people educating themselves on culture instead of simply appropriating it
I think this is cultural appreciation. She was invited/encouraged to wear a yukata. Cultural appropriation would be some dumbass wearing a ceremonial robe from [insert random culture here] just because it looks "cute" even though it's very disrespectful. Especially if there are requirements to wear it. For example, maybe you have to be a virgin under 16.
Many Japanese people have made it very clear that it is encouraged for foreigners to wear yukatas and participate in traditional Japanese activities. It's a way of encouraging people to learn about Japanese culture and admire the beauty of the culture. Wearing a yukatas does not have religious or ceremonial connotation, it's simply a traditional piece of clothing. It is very different than if someone were to wear a Native American headdress or ceremonial tribal outfits from various tribes throughout the world. Rachel and Jun made an excellent video talking about this particular issue. Jun who grew up in Japan discusses how not only is it okay for foreigners to wear yukatas and even kimonos, but Japanese people often encourage it and are happy to see other people wearing these items and learning about Japan's cultural history. As long as you are respectful while wearing it and do your best to wear it properly and not mock the clothing, it is definitely not "cultural appropriation.'" I suggest you actually put time and effort into researching topics before you make these types of claims online. There are many instances where things like cultural appropriation, racism, sexism, etc should be called out, but if you're not careful you will inadvertently make the problem worse. In this instance Japanese people may be upset that there are non-Japanese people out in the world trying to police who should and shouldn't participate in Japanese culture. It is up to Japanese people to make these calls, and no one else.
appropriation would be taking a culture or something, and claiming it as your own. Someone can wear a Dashiki , and appreciate it and know where it's from and tell people of its background when asked. but just wearing it and saying it's yours is appropriation
Haha I love the dream weaver part! Also, Martina's hair and makeup are giving me life right now! I'm loving the purple addition to her hair, it's inspiring :D
I love SImon's glasses in this video, they look awesome on Simon. That Yukata looks amazing on Martina. There's a reason why "Martina" rhymes with "Yukata". Those flowers in her hair look amazing too. The fluffy bath pouf material looks amazing too.
Man I love when you guys talk about your lovely grandma neighbor! I hope one day you can do a video with her. She reminds me of my very own lovely grandma landlord who passed away but she was always helping my family. I love your yukata, Martina and of I could have a pattern of my own I'd want orange and red with either stars or direwolves.
Cultural appropriation is not when you wear a traditional garment to a place where it's appropriate. It's when things specific to a culture are taken out of context and used as a "trend" or simply as something that "looks nice" by people who are not of that culture and are totally disregarding the meaning behind. In this video you are NOT culturally appropriating but it is definitely a real issue.
Simon! You'll probably need to get a yukata custom ordered with Jun because they don't typically make them with sleeves long enough for guys as tall as you two lol
I literally cried a bit when the neighbor said that he thinks you are so beautiful. That was the sweetest thing ever.

4) tying an obi is tiring af, I can imagine it's especially hard for you with your EDS. Unless you want to teach Simon how to do it, you should look into getting a pre-tied obi. Much faster and easier!
I hope you have fun with your yukata Martina
martina! i think your yukata pattern is wonderful and really suits you!
Thank you again to +Basia Siemianowska for the Polish subtitles. You're lovely! And thank you to whoever did the French subtitles. Your name isn't showing up, but we appreciate the help. Thank you!
this is the happiest video I've seen in forever

Martina's braids gives me life! What's the style called? I really want to see her do a tutorial for this! :)
snake braid
Friendship braid I think b
Ppl r saying its a snake braid
KOOKIE!! ARMY
+Spicy Reunionnese Macaroon NAMJOON!!!! ARMYYYYY OML
Martina's expressions while speaking with their neighbor were adorable. It really seems like they're growing fond of each other!
Because of you I rented a yukata when I visited Japan. The grandmas and grandpas who saw me stopped and took pictures of me and with me. I was overwhelmed by the praises they gave me. Best experience in Japan. I love how there are alot of people in Kyoto who wear this.
and what is up with martinas hair??? what kind of braid is that!? :D
I know!! I don't know how it works, but I love it!!
Oh I see, you mean while holding the mittle section down??
It's called the snake braid
the snake braid is doing a regular one and at the end you just hold one section of hair and pull the others up!
martina you look sooooo prettyyyyy
+
I feel like the Yukata Martina got for herself is totally her! The colors look great and the boats, stars, clouds are so adorable!
I love the purple and pink in the hair! It looks fantastic!
so i am a bit of a traditionalist in terms of cultural things, and I am SUPER displeased with these modern yukatas. BUT!!!!!! i love Martina's yukata, and I love it because it is so unmistakably modern - no one will be confused on whether that's a traditional yukata.
Adored this video! You looked so beautiful, Martina! Simon, I hope you can find your perfect print!
I would have Sakura blossom on mine or roses~
I would want that too 🌸🌸🌸
me too *.*
Omg~ nice❤
Anyone say my name?
+Sakura Blossoms I did 🙊
I watched y'all's videos all through high school, and I haven't really kept up with everything since I started college.
I went on a short exchange trip to Japan about six years ago and all the exchange students were given a yukata as a gift - mine is a somewhat more traditional-looking purple floral print, but the obi has little totoros on it and I love it so much ;w;
Yukata be kidding me.
Sorry, I had too.
Thank you to +Tábata Bandez for the Portuguese subtitles! Woohoo!
The yukata fits your style.
your choice was SUPER CUTE, OMFG!!
I hope you can find a fun one too Simon!
Martina's hair is so beautiful, especially in braids! The purple to pink is amazing^^
My husband, my kids and I are all watching your channel! My husband (he's from Busan!) is catching up on a few episodes and my kids are rewatching your Mario cart episode! We love you Simon and Martina! I hope you guys can come to Seattle again!

*started taking pictures of me
+Abigail Correa ANOTHER CORRECTION it was kimono and not a yukata lmao but still was an amazing feel
Thank you for watching!
Oh Martina, you look so pretty in everything! But you totally sparkle in your yukata. It makes me so happy to see every new video you two post!
Awww you looked so beautiful & stunning. We all live and learn im definitely subscribeing! 😊
Martina is FULL RAINBOW
Your 'kimono' picture isn't just a kimono, it's a furisode, specifically for official events, worn by unmarried women, signalled by the really long sleeves. ;-) Regular kimono have sleeves of the same length as the yukata. :D
Grandma neighbor is precious. 😭
I'm like 100% positive one of your followers can make a patterned fabric for Simon! ;)
It's my first year in Japan and I cannot WAIT to buy a yukata this summer!! I hope I find one that looks just as great on me as Martina's does on her!
Martina! Your yukata looks absolutely amazing on you. The pirate pattern and the color are so you. :) good job on picking your first yukata!
YAASS Simon and Martina calling out the whiny sjws 💯💯
What store did you buy that yukata at? i am going in April hopefully to see the cherry blossoms and i want to buy one :D:D:D
Do you guys speak in japanese to your neighbors or mostly english?
+pinkglase we speak mostly English, but we try to use as many Japanese words as we can, though everyone here seems to speak English somehow.
ohh! that's interesting! I was wondering how she seemed to understand you two!!
+Simon and Martina is it required for Japanese students to know english?
I know you two probably will not be buying one any time soon, with your recent yukata purchase, but I think you should show us kimono! I am very interested to see the different meanings and styles, for married and unmarried women with the hair and such that you mentioned!
You picked the perfect yukata to match you!!! So adorable!!
Martina! You look so beautiful and colorful like a unicorn! :D
I know you guys are really busy with the FAPFAPs and WTATs and editing and whatnot, but I really like these TL;DRs as well - they're so few and far between now (;_;)
Hounestly, I'm just really interested in the answers to a lot of little stuff.
Simon and Martina I see. I'm delighted to get a response anyhow! Looking forward to future TL;DRs! 기대된다~
+Simon and Martina Martina! You look SO FREAKIN GOOD in your yukata! I mean wow! 😍
Martina's eyeshadow; en pointe. Your yukata is so you, I love it !
You look gorgeous, Martina! You picked the perfect Yukata. The colors complimented your skin tone and hair and, heck, it is just so perfectly Martina! I hope you can find something that works for you, Simon; so you both can wear your Yukatas to one of the summer festivals!
If you set aside Korean currency to buy a Japanese sash, would that be...
*_Obi Won_*?
#Puns #lol
SO GOOD. And so bad. I love it.
You look like a Japanese-style pirate princess. Wonderful.
cultural evolution.
was that a play on "cultural appropriation?" if so, i love your comment.
Martina's eyeshadow is poppin ughh 😍😍😝
That Yukata looks awesome! Full of bright and estatic colours, it really suits you! Personally, I would get a subtle mint colour with baby pink polka dots!
I keep staring at Martina's hair
oh no I can already see people complaining about 'cultural appropriation' now
+Fredde jpg it's gonna happen, I know.
As long as you are respectful while wearing it and do your best to wear it properly and not mock the clothing, it is definitely not "cultural appropriation.'"
I suggest you actually put time and effort into researching topics before you make these types of claims online.
+Alyssa Burton I believe TheLovelyIfy had a video on the topic. which may seem contradicting but it's very informative.
Stacia Hill I'm not reading that whole essay but if you thought I said it was appropiation, read the first sentence
***** Read the first sentence you blabbering idiot.
Martina’s yukata is so kawaiii - ❤
why nos just choose a "girl" yukata? i don't undesrtand the problem
The cutting is very different.
+kagome481 gender roles.he can still wear it if he wants
It would probably reach his knees, he's a really tall guy
+Ankhesepaaten haha true
+Lülo Borio not gender roles 😑 he wants to wear yukata for men, but he didn't like the patterns
"I'm very picky when it comes to my clothing"
wearing a generic solid color v-neck
wut
It suits him though, lol
Picky doesn't mean you can't wear basics, just means you know what you like. Duh.
+BeepsandHums actually everything simon wears looks very planned and none of his outfits ever look like something that was just thrown on randomly.
That Yukata is so beautiful! And it's so fitting for you, Marina!
Exactly.
