Hey yardie, I had the chance to view your video it took me back home. I am a senior and left Jamaica as a child. I never saw my parents make ginger beer. But now as a senior, I am trying to share my culture with my grandchildren. I thoroughly enjoyed you and Grandmama. Thanks
@@YardieBelly ohh so you did try it. Can you ask her how long she left the raw rice in? And did she say that she refrigerated it or she just left it out to ferment? Also, didn't you say you made some before and how did you do yours, you mentioned some people use yeast. Thanks for answering back lol
Hi Yardie….. As a young child I was introduced to ginger beer by my grandmama. Her background on her parents side was from St. Kitts. She bought it from the wholesale beer & juice location in New York back in the 80’s. I am not sure if you are familiar with this one but it had a pirate on a brown bottle. At that time it was very good & strong. I tried this brand not too long ago it was extremely weak. The other day I tried a different brand. It was okay, but I was not impressed. I decided to learn how to prepare it homemade (along with Sorrell - if I am spelling it correctly). I would like to know if the ginger was boiled with the water along & with back of rice? Or was the water boiled first then added that on top of the ginger & bag of rice? Please help & Thank You So Much
@@YardieBellyey there from London UK 🇬🇧 UK born of Jamaican parents but they've gone now🙏🏾 I'm wondering about the addition of the rice. I realise that it is for fermentation purposes, yes? But how do you prepare it and how much rice in weight? Is it washed, raw white rice in a bag? And how long should the ginger beer be left to ferment until it is ready to drink? Thanks in advance ❤
She blended the ginger and then added it to the pot of boiling water. The pot must be turned off so the ginger can steep overnight she also added her spices and rice package for the fermentation process
@@Absolute811 Oh yea she put the rice in after she boil the ginger. She don't boil the rice with it but she leaves it overnight or however long she ferments it for
I wish I had done this more with my great aunties in Anguilla. Because I spent all of my time in The States with my mother's mother here, I got that cooking down, but My two aunties back home would make ginger beer, candies, and all sorts of delicious foods up into their 80s. I got some recipes dictated from one of them (we actually called Anty), but now she and her sister are gone taking their recipes with them. You do a service~
I just have a list of ingredients in the description box. It was a little difficult to get her to slow down for a detailed video. Plus lots of other people moving about in the house. I will however be doing my version of the same thing which will be super detailed.

From Sierra Leone. We share similar food style. Normally we add cloves to our ginger beer. You should try it.

Why are they similar?
I do add few cloves and cinnamon stick . Put in the sun for a day. I do not sweeten it and real strong my favorite drink. I don't use rice

Thanks! Did I hear it has to ferment 2 days in the fridge? I thought these things were left in the sun. In a glass. Covered or uncovered? (Confused).
The Jamaican method is different. Most ppl don't ferment theirs in that way anymore. This way is how she's been doing it for years.
I put the rice in for only 20 minutes. I used the ginger flavored rice to make rice pudding.
Do u wash the rice before you use it?
Ty for the rice explanation I was trying to find a different way from using cream of tartar
Blessings for bringing out the elder Auntie to clear the confusions.
Oh...what great joy to hear & see these nice Jamaican recipes. My grandparents were Jamaicans!!!
CONGRATULATIONS👍
Question, I really LOVE ginger beer my question is a out the fermentation, can you explain in detail how to use the rice to ferment?
I honestly never did it before. The rice is raw and added to the brew like Japanese saki. I didn't leave it in long enough I think however...

how long is it fermented with the rice?
It can be fermented overnight or as long as you want. The longer it stays it's the stronger it gets.
