I honestly LOVE driving the manuals, I dont mind it even in congested cities. BUT this is definitely a very wise move by Hyundai. First its very cost effective. Secondly the head nod in AMT is mostly due to the gears shifting automatically and you would have to guess and work around modulating the throttle. Here you dictate the terms, so even if the head nod technically existed it would be minimized simply because you lift off throttle switch gears and then accelerate again, you dont have to wait for the GB to respond and finish changing gears. I see a lot of potential in this type of gearbox. The only question is how long does the actuator/sensors last as they are electronically controlled. you can still drive with a half burnt clutch but if the actuators give up, you would be stranded. Also I have one question, which sounds stupid to ask, but can you downshift from say 5th/6th to 3rd, basically skip gears when emergency braking? does the auto clutch intrude during emergency braking?
Kudos are due to Hyundai who take the risk of least giving a range of options to its consumers. However whether iMT will be popular, time will tell. In my experience AMT WITH a manual mode is superior to iMT. Unlike going through the full motions of an iMT, shifting in AMT manual mode simply requires a simple tip with full control over the vehicle shift pattern. Even in full auto mode. AMT , if driven in a linear manner, releasing the accelerator timed with RPM/ and gear change ( one can anticipate that with experience) , head bobbing and jerks can be minimized. I think iMT is neither here nor there! I dislike the term' aggressive, enthusiastic ' driving given the terrible road discipline and traffic on our roads. Hope increased law reinforcement checks and fines will make people drive with better road sense and discipline.

A 20,000 difference is totally justified since we won't have to worry about burning clutches and buying a new one.

One thing to note is that as per Hyundai brochure at this time the SX variant doesn't get the HLA. So I guess in that variant (since it's at 9.99L it's taxed a lot less in some states) we have to use the brakes on an incline.
Non sense!.. In AMT you can engage the car in full automatic mode n not worry about both cluth n gear lever!.. Can you do it in iMT!?.. Obviously No.. The iMT is not an Automatic at all!.. you still have to shift the gear lever to make a move!..
@@pravinmurthy everyone knows how an AMT functions my friend. My concern is because of premature clutch wear that some AMT units cause. There are quite a lot of Maruti and Tata in service centers for clutch pack and actuator replacements. Sometimes the service denies warranty after saying that it's a wear and tear part. But the issue is when your clutch wears out in 3000kms and you don't control the clutch directly this becomes an expensive and unnecessary burden. If iMTs don't cause premature clutch wear by slipping the clutch then I will prefer it over AMT.

I think this transmission has best of both worlds. You have convenience of automatic as you no longer have to press the clutch , as well as thrill of manual transmission as you can run the car in the gear you desire. Probably more car manufacturers will follow suit. Definately better than AMT which seems to be a half baked solution. Good job sir👍

An excellent review. Aftermarket Retrofit kits have been around for a number of years in India for converting MTs to iMTs. But were not widely known. Coming from Hyundai this concept creates a lot more confidence for people to go in for such retrofits.
