My weekend consists of waking up to a new Rick nineg video, hearing him gleefully greet us with a " what's up guys and gals," then sitting back to enjoy life lol.
What a great compliment!

What about grandma and Fester

I worked in the film industry behind the camera for many years , And John Astin was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. He talk to everyone on the set no matter what job you had. Just wish more actors were like him.
I remember him from night court playing the father of the Judge.
I also met John in the 1990's and I totaly agree, he was the nicest person I ever met and very genuine.
My fiance worked in Hollywood as an extra on movie sets etc and he most actors werent friendly but then you had some that were friendly and would talk to you
While I was living in Baltimore in the early 2000s, I "bumped" into him in line at the bank. I struck up a conversation with him. He couldn't have been nicer.
I met Patty Duke (Astin) when I was assistant to Pierre Lenders, manager of the Royal Oaks Golf and Country Club in Titusville, Florida in 1969. She was staying in one of our luxury suits (alone) during the Apollo 11 mission. She spent a lot of time in our lounge among many celebrities staying with us - Hugh Downs, Walter Cronkite, Vincent Price and Spiro Agnew to name a few -- and was slobbering drunk/stoned, rude, obnoxious, overbearing and insulting most of the time.
*"I joke around a lot about the manic times because they're funny. We manics do outrageous things and it is part of our colorful nature."*
~ Patty Duke Astin
What a nightmare she must have been for John!
According to Ted Cassidy's son, the first person selected to play the part of Lurch was Abe Vigoda. Also, the character was supposed to be hunched over (hence the name "Lurch") and he wasn't supposed to have any speaking lines. But when he read for the part, and Gomez pulled the rope to summon him, he appeared and, in the awkward silence, ad-libbed his now famous, "You rang?". Everyone cracked up and it was this that won him the part.
One more small feel-good fact-the children loved Ted Cassidy, and they remained in touch long after the show ended.
❤️ Lyrch
I can't imagine John Astin not being Gomez. Good call to cast him in that character. I love the Addams Family. Their "kookiness" always made me smile. Plus the Addams were obviously a close knit family who absolutely adored each other.
Thank you for sharing these behind the scenes facts 😊
Sometimes you get a director who gets the perfect people for all the parts and this was one of the first.:)
I met John Astin at a toy convention at The Shrine auditorium. He was walking around, so I stopped him, shook his hand and got an autograph. Very nice man.
I'm jealous!! I'd absolutely love to meet him
Me TOO!!!!!
I LOVE John Astin, he is the BEST Gomez Addams that I've ever seen!!!!!!
❤️🤩👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🥰♥️
John astin is death
Still alive and kicking as of June 2024@@obaidulhoquebhuiyan7095
And in Addams Family Values the boy who had a crush on Wednesday was allergic to literally everything must be a nod to the original pugsley actor
I never thought of that..
Great catch!
Yeah. I realised the same.
MAYBE His character was based on Ken?😎
The Addams Family is one of those shows that if you watched it as a kid you can come back many years later and watch it as an adult and love it as much (if not more) as you did when you were a kid.
Interesting video but I would have enjoyed a little background info on Uncle Fester and Gramama as well. This show brings back a lot of childhood memories.
Jackie Coogan began acting as a child and starred with Charlie Chaplin in "The Kid".
His parents ripped off his earnings, which led to "Coogan's Law" regarding the earnings of child actors.
Blossom Rock (Edith Marie Blossom MacDonald) began in Vaudeville. Her younger sister was the more famous actress of the family - Jeanette MacDonald.
@@kelf114 Thanks - that was great info. I looked it up and read the details of the law and found it pretty interesting.
@@kelf114 -My mom was crazy about Jeanette MacDonald & Nelson Eddy musicals.Me not so much.I did not know that about Blossom Rock.
As well as Caroline Jones, who played Morticia
Christel Headington: My Mom loved Jeanette MacDonald & Nelson Eddy, too. It must have just been their generation. RIP I always thought "When I'm calling you" sounded like a cow saying moo. lol
One thing you did not mention is that the voice of Cousin Itt was done by Carolyn Jones without any recording trickery! She would demonstrate this talent on talk shows of the day!
That’s incorrect. A studio worker recorded gibberish and then sped it up.
@@fredarok579 That sounds more like it. Perhaps Caroline was just demonstrating her power of imitation❓
@@dianetheisen8664 Still a very impressive feat.
@@fredarok579 No doubt.

Charles Addams wanted to call the Pugsley character "Pubert", but the network wouldn't let him.
John Astin is currently a theatre professor at Johns Hopkins Univ. and lives in Baltimore.
Austins son, Sean did much better in the television business than his father, starring in The Goonies and Sam in The Lord of the Rings. Word has it Sean Austin's wife is very jealous of him as well, and she didn't like it one bit when Sean kissed Rosy Cotton in the Lord of the Rings.
Is he still alive? God bless him! My hero!
@@johnloftus Yes, but he's up in his years.
@@robbiesmith1381
He must be - but he was sooo cool back then!
If you see him tell him "Hi". He really helped us weird kids cope!
He was our example before there were nerds, geeks and freaks! TY
I did not realize John Astin was still with us. I know his ex-wife, Patty Duke, has passed on.
One of my favorite episodes Morticia decides to do some redecorating..the neighbor lady helps, but is frustrated because Morticia wants everything "black, off black, dark black..etc" then she says she wants to do one room in "salmon." Neighbor lady gets all excited "oh! Pink?!" Morticia answers:"SCALE." 😏
Loved this show. As the son of a WW LL vet, it competed in more ways than one with "Hogan's Heroes". Everything you discussed surprised me. John Astin as Gomez was priceless. Nobody could have played the part better.
A friend of mine (since passed) was a friend of Ted Cassidy when they were both lifeguards in Daytona Beach.
Awesome , I too was a lifeguard
i loved ted when he sang with the partridge family
I bet that was great for him, pulling drowning people out of the ocean without even having to go in and get wet!
I wanna know more about how Gomez falls in love with Tish.
There's 2 episodes concentrating on that. They are called Morticia's Romance part 1 and 2, if that helps.
John Astin DID have a real life thing for Carolyn Jones.
(Who wouldn't 😍)
Just nobody says if it went anywhere.
Yes, more videos on the Addams Family! Most interesting to me from this video was your description of the house, its history and use for the set (especially the addition of the top storey). Great research, Rick.
Blossom Rock who played Mama was the sister of Jannette McDonald. The singing team of Jannette McDonald and Nelson Eddy were very popular in the 40's. McDonald was Blossom Rock's maiden name.
Cool info, thanks...I love film trivia like that.
Thanks; didn’t know that!
Jeanette
I didn't know that! :O Thanks!
Coolest name. Blossom Rock.
As a kid in the 60's I remember my mom purchasing us comic books with the Addams Family. I loved them.
If you are interested I'm related to Blossom Rock who played "grandma's". I have a bit of history.
Awesome! Please contact me at ricknineg@yahoo.com
Ok I'm interested in more information please
Clearly the safety of children has diminished over the years.
" Ahhh, Morticia, did you speak French?". Gomez. being turned on.
Interesting fun fact: In the 70's Famous Five TV series, the kids playing the F5 had no stunt doubles and had to do all the dangerous stuff themselves with very little safety measures in place (sometimes none). In a reunion interview, the woman who played as Anne said it was like they were literally expendable.
Ferdelance
That is in deed some interesting information.
I own all three seasons of this classic show! One of my all time favorites, and for some reason ( upon reflection, I believe it was the caliber of the comedy, as opposed to some of the more silly antics on "The Munsters" ), I always looked forward to macabre escapades of Gomez, Morticia ( always loved that black, slinky gown/outfit ), Lurch, Uncle Fester, Grandmama, Puxley, Wednesday, the mysterious 'Thing', and, whenever he'd show up at the front door of the Addams' mansion, the loveable Cousin Itt! Oh! And lest I forget: Kitty Kat and Cleopatra!
One of my favorite shows as a kid and still is!! Gomez and his quick witted comments are classic
Great factual video. I loved most learning that Ted Cassidy also played Thing. I never knew that.
Another fun fact -- Lurch was originally supposed to be mute, but one time during rehearsal Cassidy came out with "You rang?" in that slow, deep bass voice, and everyone on the set cracked up. That became Lurch's signature, and it was the result of a Ted Cassidy ad-lib.
It’s awesome to learn some facts about the Addams Family. It’s such a great show and hope to see some more videos about it in the future. Great video Rick!
And also Uncle Fester was played by Jackie Coogan who in the 1920s worked with Charlie Chaplin in his feature debut “the kid” and he was considered the cutest kid actor, then after the Addams family he was considered the ugliest adult actor.
Jackie Coogan was not only a fine actor, but also a legendary pilot in WW II. He held the record for night-time hours in gliders. He was terribly sad to have gone from the most beautiful child star on screen to a monster. On the other hand, one of the most macabre of the Charles Addams cartoons involved his (then-unnamed) Fester character driving a rattle-trap flivver around a blind curve, signaling the driver of what appeared to be a Buick Roadmaster to pass---into the path of an on-coming tractor-trailer.
The Jackie Coogan Act was pasted to protect the earning of child actors. Googan's mother and step father spent the lot.
He also participated in a lynching in university... one of his classmates was kidnapped and turned up dead after the random was paid. When the kidnappers were caught 200 people went down to a jail , got them out and lynched them.
Ted Cassidy was a radio newsman on duty in Dallas the day Kennedy was shot!
I believe the station was WFAA, and the recording is available on UA-cam!
Loved Addams Family & all those great, fun shows from my childhood.
I loved Ted Cassidy as lurch & esp when he played organ & tried to dance. It was hilarious! Good memories. Ty rick
Do more vlogs on the Addams family
In the TV show, Fester was Mortica's Uncle, and Grandmama was Gomez's mother, but in the movie, they switched everything around...always wondered why
You could easily do a series on this show.
As noted in an earlier comment: John Astin was married to Patty Duke, their son:Sean Astin - A fantastic actor in his own right.
Jackie Coogan started his career in 1918, became a child superstar after the 1921 movie “The Kid “ with C.Chaplin. Had quite a career, but was “ Blacklisted “ by L.B.Mayor for suing his own parents for spending ALL of his money, resulting in the first of many child protection laws - “ the Jackie Coogan Law”.
He went to TV, and had success with another TV show, a Western,
“Cowboy G Men”.
He stayed active until 1984❗️he also did lots of radio.
His grandson is Actor
Kieth Coogan.
They say that Jackie Coogan’s comedic timing was perfect.
He could/did play every type of role, serious, comedy, horror,....
👍🙂‼️
also married to betty grable, supposedly was one of the men holding the rope that a mob used to lynch a guy who killed a friend of his, i seem to recall him as some kind of glider pilot in WWII... someone should make a movie of his life.
@@ryanbarker5217 did'ent he also portrays as one of the little rascals
As I recall, Coogan served with distinction with the Army Air Corps in Burma.
I believe he was a bomber pilot.
Lisa Loring married a famous porn actor from the 1980’s golden age of porn, Jerry Butler, later divorced. The list of trivia is long with this cast....
The one that surprised me most was that Lurch also played Thing. I enjoyed seeing who played Cousin It. I'm glad you condensed all these things into one 8-minute video. I would even watch a 10 or 11 minute video if you told us about the actors playing Uncle Fester, Grand-ma-ma, and Morticia. When I watched this show in the 1960's, my mum would sometimes exclaim: "Oh, Caroline Jones, she was a famous actress in the past!", and apparently she was much older than she looked when she made the Addams Family.
I thought I was a pretty big fan of the Addams Family, but I don't remember "Kitty Cat" at all. And the info on the house was super interesting. Wow. I'm going to have to take a nostalgic trip down Adams Blvd aren't I? Thanks Rick!
I also consider myself a fan of the show -- but I, too, don't remember Kitty.
The weird thing about most of Kitty Kat's screen time is that it consisted of coming partly down the stairs and then being frightened and running back up the steps. The only time I remember K K doing anything else is in the flashback episode where Morticia tells her children how she met and fell in love with their father. Kitty Kat belonged to Morticia before she married Gomez.
Kitty Kat was on an episode about Mr. Conky, the plumber. In some views, they show Kitty Kat coming down the stairs.
I remember Kitty's limited appearances. One of my favorite things about the show was hoping that one of the minor entities would get worked into the plot - or just even make an appearance. Kitty, Grandmama, and Cleopatra the man eating plant were the most elusive, but even Cousin It wasn't always around in every episode. I thought he was pretty cool - and just how sweet is the name Blossom Rock (Grandmama)?
Not true fans. I used to watch this with my parents on TV Land back when they actually played old shows. Bunch of goth wannabe posers the lot of you.
When I was a kid, my mother used to get The New Yorker magazine. I was introduced to Charles Addams cartoons at an early age and loved them. When the TV show came around, I was a fan from the start. My family were antique collectors, and I grew up with a love of Victorian mansions and interior decor. The mansion and its quirky furnishings appealed to me. When the movies came out, I did go see them. They were alright, but I thought they were pale in comparison to the TV show, or to the original cartoons. Thanks for this video. I really enjoyed it.
If I am not mistaken Ted Cassidy also provided the voice for the television series"The Incredible Hulk" which ran from 1978-1982 on CBS.
Do all the Addam’s Family and Gilligan’s Island viddies you want. I LOVED both of those great shows! Thank you! 🤙🏼
U forgot uncle fester being a child actor in that charlie chaplain movie the kid.
I didn't remember the person with the hair but I loved watching the show! My favorite episode was the one where GOMEZE (?) started off with AMNESIA and kept getting hit on the head to restore his memory!! His final comment was something like "BOY! Do I have a headache!" HILARIOUS!
I’ve recently become obsessed with the original series. It hold up well even today!
Fav fact and most surprising was who portrayed thing I didn't know Ted Cassidy did it and he had a stand-in that is really amazing to me now I know....The Addams Family snap snap; more on The Addams Family please one of my all-time favorite shows.. I enjoy your stories Ric, and Happy New Year..
The tune is my ring tone! I was on a transit bus going to a PT appt.and my phone went off before I got off. A few people snapped along with the tune. Once my phone went off during Mass and the priest snapped his fingers. Despite that, I decided to keep it.

@@jillniemczynski5517 I like Donald Pleasance. He was the meek bird watcher in "The Great Escape". Such a different character than the one in "Halliween"!

When I was a kid, the Addams Family was my favorite TV show and I loved everybody in the cast.

Brilliant vid Rick keep em comin’
This was great! I guess my favorite point was how Ted Cassidy also played Thing. BTW, I would love to see a WHOLE video on just Ted Cassidy, his life and getting this part etc. It could even be a two-parter!
Hi Rick. Once again new facts. I used to live on Scarff St. right near Adams Blvd. about 1972-1973 when I went to U.S.C. I'll have to go back and check the mansion area out. Second Ken Weatherwax was a close relative of Rudd Weatherwax the owner of all the Lassies from the show Lassie. In fact I met the last Timmie Jon Provost in 1963!
Cool. I never made that connection based on the unusual Weatherwax name! Duh!
Chasbo Daniels: Come on wake up and smell the Weatherwax. You'd have to! The name Weatherwax is too unique! I googled it years ago and found the connection. Before the internet and Google, Wikipedia it was next to impossible.
Keep on Addams Familing, Loving Lucy, Munstering etc.!
Awesome show wht a beautiful time it was 😘👍🎥
Everyone was so perfectly cast !.. Can't imagine anyone else doing those parts... What happened to the Lion, Kitty ?.. Did he retire after that ?.. If he was previously with a circus, how old was he ?.. I'm so glad he was not in the circus life anymore..
The big news to me was the same person (mostly) played Lurch & Thing. Sad about the real house that was demolished. Nice information! Thank you!
It’s nice to here how much they focused on child safety back in the day
Heck going as far as too have someone from the school system teach them on set.
Considering the horror stories other child actors have told
It’s nice hearing that Hollywood wasn’t always so awful
The fact about Lerch playing Thing is my favorite.
Love The Addams Family and i always enjoy your videos. 👍
THANK YOU for posting this!! i am an Adams (sadly, just one "d," lol), and all of my life, my family has felt a special kinship with these wonderfully mysterious and spooky distant cousins!! i love hearing interesting behind-the-scenes facts about the actors and tidbits about the show - my favorite in this post is about the house, though it makes me a bit sad that it no longer stands! The Addams Family is a beloved part of my childhood and even now, at 45, i will still watch it when i can find it!! :D
Side note: Ken Weatherwax's two uncles were the trainers for all the Lassies used in the TV series. Had the pleasure of meeting one of them in Arizona and he had Lassie's pups with him, very nice man and he let me play with the puppies! I was only 13 at the time but what fun to play with those sweet pups!
Great video, loved the Addams Family, be nice to see more
Thx Rick. I had no Idea Cassidy also played the part of Thing. So many yummy facts in this video!
The good people of West Virginia are proud to have Cassidy as a home-state actor, or was anyway. He's from Martinsburg, WV
He also played Ruk in the original series of "Star Trek".
Another great fact thank you
@Karl Lentz Yes, major gaff leaving this info out about Jackie Coogan!
I heard that Thing was the musical director Vic Mizzy's hand!
My parents, my siblings & I would normally watch The Munsters on TV when I was a child in the 1960s. However I wanted to see both shows, so awhile back I bought the DVD box sets of The Addams Family and The Munsters for myself. Now I can see both shows whenever I choose to watch them. I have seen Lisa Loring who played Wednesday Addams over the years and she started out as a pretty little girl having become an absolutely beautiful woman. ❤️

They had to get rid of the original actress who played lilly on the munsters because she looked too much like Morticia from the Adams family..
we never missed this show thanks
I'll never ever forget the time I encountered Ted Cassidy in a Sears department store candy line in Glendale, California(I lived "next door" in Eagle Rock). My good friend "John" who was just ahead of me in line whispered to me, "Hey Marty, look how tall that guy that just walked up in back of you is, he's a giant!" I thought I'd turn around and pretend to "just be looking for a wall clock to only see what time is was getting to be", and when I glanced up I saw "Lurch" without any makeup or costume! I recognized him right away, who wouldn't? Well, I wanted to say something to him, but I couldn't think of a single thing to say that didn't sound stupid, so I just threw a "fun knee" joke at him by saying, "Hey kid, you here to get free popcorn too!?". Mr. Cassidy's eyes grew a sparkle letting me know he thought what I said was funny, me calling him a kid and all, then he groaned out in true Lurch fashion, "PEEEEENUT.... MMMMMM & MMMMMMS!". Then we talked for a couple of minutes. I told him I was there to get new school clothes, he told me he was just browsing, but that he might pick up some new tools while he was there. That was on a Sunday afternoon. On Monday, I had the best bragging rights story to share before school, during breaks between classes, at lunch and after school let out too. I was 13 and in 7th grade going to a school that was Jr and Sr high, grades 7-12. Even the big kids wanted to hear what me and Lurch talked about, and where we had met. The show had ended by then, 1970. But they still showed reruns at the time.

The Addams family would be the weird family in the neighborhood, but they would be the ones you could ask for help and not expect anything in return. Just good people.
Great video! I had no idea about the house or that Ted played Thing too. Very cool. I remember watching this show during the 60's.
I'm very surprised you didn't mention anything about Jackie Coogan (Uncle Fester) or Blossom Rock (Grandmama). I loved Fester!
Jackie Coogan, as a child actor, was the kid in Charlie Chaplin's movie "The Kid" (1921). Jackie Coogan, because his parents embezzled all of his money, is the reason we have "Coogan's Law", which is what protects children (by putting [a percentage of] their earnings into a trust) so that parents can't touch a child actor's earnings.
@Don X Gypsy Rose Lee.

Did anybody mention that the great TV music scorer Vic Mizzy composed the Addams Family theme AND the Green Acres theme? When you hear them, it becomes obvious they’re from the same person.
(Addams: “Da da da dum, Snap, snap”.) (Green Acres: “Da da da da da, dum dum”)
What an amazingly uninteresting collection of little known facts! This was one of the best comedies of the 60's; brilliantly cast and well written.
Really enjoyable, Rick. I was surprised about the house, which I always thought was just a painting they used. Too bad some rich fan didn't buy the house on Adams Blvd and have it moved to another location before it was razed,
I should be noted that John Astin and Lisa Loring are the only surviving cast members of the original TV series. It seems many died a young death. Carolyn Jones in 1983 at age 53; Ted Cassidy in 1979 at age 46; and Ken Weatherwax in 2014 at age 59.
John Astin is still going strong at age 88, and (as noted below) is a Professor of Drama at John Hopkins University, his alma mater. Lisa Loring is age 60 and had some rough years, but got her life back on track and still does acting roles.
Stay Positive and Be Hopeful!
Awesome summary! Also do not forget that Felix is still alive, aka Cousin Itt

@@mxlance1 oh I know I just found out that he is still alive I found a video he did in 2018 and he's 88 yrs old. He's talking to someone but he's not speaking too clearly so I'm wondering if he has some kind of a health problem but at 88 yrs of age who knows?! But he's seems to be doing ok! I never watched the Addams Family much but your presentation, especially the behind the scenes stuff was very interesting! Great job Rick!!
Ted Cassidy was excellent as Lurch but found him a bit chilling as that android in that Star Trek episode.
Pretty sure John Astin was ham radio/cb radio operator enthusiast in the 70's. I remember him being in CB Action magazine a few times back in those days.
I loved The Addams Family and The Munsters as a kid seeing this brings back good memories of my childhood .
I always wondered about thing. I remember Lurch and thing together. Thanks for clearing that up. This trivia needs to be remembered. Why, because early TV was creative and not computer generated. Thanks.
Pugsley died a few years ago. He worked as a strange hand. This leaves us with Wednesday. I think Gomez is still with us. I love this show. It made me what I'm today.🌙
Uncle Fester was Jackie Coogan former child actor, The Jackie Coogan laws were passed to protect child actors to make sure they did not get screwed over as bad as him. Ted Cassidy was "Black Manta" and "Braniac" on Challenge of the Superfriends cartoon in addition to other voice over work for Hanna Barbera
facts missing - Uncle Fester was originally Mortisha's Uncle in the TV series. The movies brought him back to the cartoon as Gomez's brother
Thanks for the submission. I only listed 10 and there are WAAAY more than 10. Maybe in another future video!
This was incredible!!!! Thanks, Nick, I got a scream ou of this!!
I grew up watching the Addams Family on TV in the 60s. I always loved Morticia. She was truly the consummate "hostess with the mostest" to her unnerved guests. Serving yak meat and henbane tea while engaging her shocked and terrified guests with polite conversation!
That was cool! Thanks for sharing this!
I was a child in the 1960's and i was totally enamored by Gomez Addams and wanted to BE Mrs. Addams, lol! I always thought she was much more beautiful than Lily Munster (and of course, Gomez was much more good-looking than Herman Munster!). The comedy was much more to my tastes than the over-the-top campiness of The Munsters, as well. The tongue-in-cheek humour of The Addams Family appealed to me way more than the somewhat slapstick humour of The Munsters. I was heartbroken when they took this show off the air. I STILL miss the original show.
I didn't know that the actor who played Lurch also played as Thing. Nice to know! I just recently found out that he also played in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. (The tallest one in the cast, of course, lol.) I would LOVE to see more videos about the original Addams Family cast. Thank you for providing this video. ♥️
