- www.riffninja.c... This Hagtsrom Viking is a Chinese made reissue of the original that was made in Sweden. The wood comes from Canada, and most of the wood work has been done by a CNC machine, meaning the cost remains very low for a high quality guitar. These Hagstrom's are very good bang for buck, and go for around $750 - $850.

Very honest review, I like the fact that while mentioning be pros, he does not try to hide the weak points of the guitar like "on some they make mistakes so you have to try a few out to get the best one..."
Cool guy
The Vikings are actually not made by CNC at all. The sides, top and back are produced by press molds, and are actually completely hand made.
Great video, just ordered a viking. I hope I get a good one. I know what you mean by sometimes getting a bad guitar. I ordered the Hagstrom Viking because I loved the way it sounded in your hands, I've watched several video's of you playing the Viking. Thanks for all your great vid's.
Beginner here and in my month long search for a "cheaper" versatile guitar, I'm just about to settle on the Viking. But I'm not sure what to look for when looking for a "bad guitar". Would you mind sharing your insight? Thanks
There’s awesome sounding I bought one
Couldn't agree more, I, for myself, have been playing with a plain old Epiphone special model first generation and i just upgraded it with DiMarzios Humbucker and it sounds awesome.
Great video!
Do you think this guitar would also go with other styles, for example John Lee Hooker or Muddy Waters or even Rock like AC/DC or Chuck Berry?
Thanks
Sebastian
I agree with you I have I Ibanez am93 with super 58 pick ups made in china and its amazing guitar I paid £459 pounds my epiphone wildcat made in china as well I had a set up done on it and its really good aswell not everyone has got a few thousand to spend on guitars and a lot of guitar that are made now are a lot better than old guitars from 70s and 80s even cheaper guitars now have better pick ups great demo I am thinking of buying a Viking myself shane
@gbargy1 I studied numerous semi-hollow style guitars for months, playing as many as possible in the store: Epi, Ibanez, Washburn, Gretsch. The Hagstrom was by far the best. Effortless to play, amazing sustain, terrific fit and finish, solid electronics. And they look cool as hell (I'm more of a 'different is better' guy.)
That said, I've swapped the Tune-o-matic for a Gotoh (better clarity), and will likely swap the tuners and pickups. It's great right out of the box though.
hey colin how come no pick guard ?did your Viking come like that or did you remove it.
my Viking has one and im wondering if I should remove it if it makes a difference in tone.
I myself am a Hagstrom fan. I like the the H beam truss rod which is much more substantial than any other truss rod system IMHO.
What amp are you using? Fender, I guess, but which model?
I HAVE BEEN THINKING OF BUYING ONE FOR YEARS HAD ONE OF THE SOLID BODIES IN THE MID 60'0 WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT HOW TO GET A GOOD ONE THE FIRST TIME AROUND THANKS
Good informative video and great demo playing. I'm Interested in knowing how to get a good one.
Sorry,,when did he actually demo it?? A few woody bits...but no comparison of the pickups,,,we really couldn't tell how it really sounded
His whole catalog of videos are using this Viking. Just pick one!
@markadiculous i own a viking and compaired to mine, the es335 models i played weren't half as good, so be careful what you say about an instrument. maybe your model sucked, but the guitar and construction is great. maybe needs new pickups though
cool video dude! ive been going into getting one of these guitars, just so expensive in store so i have been hesitant. ive found some on ebay which seem good though.
I play a 68 Viking that had humbuckers added to it by some hack. Its not worth anything to a collector but its light as a feather and sounds and feels like the finest Jazz Box.A coworker wanted $400 for the guitar and a half stack and wouldn't sell me just the amp so I took the ugly duckling axe and boy am I glad I did,the amp is long gone and forgotten.
@snakecraig thats the original. he talking bout the reissue
you keep saying Canadian, where are you from. As I am also Canadian.
How about playing the guitar?
would you recommend hagstrom viking iip over mexican fender tele?
Yes
This guy talks like Charlie Days lawyer uncle in Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia 😂
I got a Viking Deluxe Tremar uuhm.. 5-10 years ago? And it kicked ass for a good few years.. After that time however, the lesser worksmanship started to show... First small things, like the knob for the strap always coming loose, same with the tele-output, had to screw it on tightly every tim ei had used it.. After that it got more serious, and the mic-switch started failing, and eventually it gave out... And then you realize, it's f*ckin brainsurgery to get into a hollowbody like this :D I had to leave it at the shop even if it feels like a ridiculous problem... 150$ shorter a month later i got it back in the middle of a move to another city, didn't have time to try it out for some months, but when i did, guess what? Same problem, absolutely no difference. I blame that on the shop also of course, but it's a bad sign if a simple soldering thing like this could not be fixed in a month for 150 bucks...
Right now im debating wether to have it repaired again or just buy a new one. Really a shame, cause it really sounded wonderful when everything worked. I do heavily reverbed and delayed effecty jams and it's wonderful for this, the hollow body and the tremar system really is great for making weird spacy sounds that will mutate and evolve unpredictably. Never had any feedback problems even when playing -> proco rat -> liquid sunshine -> sovtek muff -> colorsound wah + maxed reverb and space echo, which i think is pretty impressive. The tone is great clean too. I also actually played some old death metal favourites in my bedroom on it, and surprisingly it actually sounded really good for this too. Don't get me wrong - it's not for glossy triggered 'grey metal', but it was great for Autopsy, Incantation and other bands that went for atmosphere over "tight sound"... But for the price, it is really a great instrument, but don't count on growing old with it if you use it regularily. Man i really should get it fixed. Hah.
Play it?
@lighteningboy i thought it was pretty informative...
I will thumb this up no problem. While i have a couple higher end guitars there is nothing wrong with the right chinese or japanese guitar. My main live guitar for years is a suprisingly heavy 80's japanese Fender strat. It's what ya do with it. The worlg is full of guys with 3 or 4 thousand dollar guitars that can't write a song.
It was
Less talk, more rock!!!
its totally different guitars youknow.
Please define better!!! A machine will make everything 100%. Maybe the Luthier was hungover the day he made the guitar? You will play like you are hungover!
Every manufactured product is prone to have a few examples not being the best. The same happens to Gibson and Fender. The difference is, finding finishing imperfections and other faults on a $3500 guitar is a "bit" more frustrating than on a $850 one. Ask me how I know.
If I was Hagstrom, I would ask him to take this down, lol
🤣
bla bla bla bla bla , on aurai préféré entendre tout le potentiel de la guitare, micro manche, micro chevalet, micro hors phase.
De bonne démos valent mieux que de long discours.
You are a weenie for your negative comments about the guitar. I honestly don't believe you. Were you paid to put in that?
a real pro awsome!!!!
