The Idaho Overland Movie

- This is the full feature length version of our Idaho Back Country Route Overlanding adventure series. The story follows Will, Chris, and Rob as they attempt the 1,200+ mile dirt road route from Jarbidge Nevada to the Canadian boarder in Portsmith Idaho.
The group starts this overlanding adventure just outside of Jarbidge, Nevada where they visit the Outdoor Inn and talk to the owners about the history of Jarbidge, which includes the last stage coach robbery in the US..and someone was killed during the Robbery. Next, they cross the Bruneau desert and hit Glenns Ferry Idaho for lunch before crossing more desert until they reach Anderson Dam and Reservoir on the south fork of the Boise River. From there, they climb into the mountains and visit a memorial to a tough pioneer woman names Peg Leg Annie, who lost both legs in a winter storm back in the late 1800s..but kept making whiskey in her bathtub even with no legs. The guys camp on top of James Creek Summit, just above Atlanta Idaho and gear up for the rest of the trip.
From the summit, then head down to the Middle Fork of the Boise river and, hit Lowman Idaho for gas, and make their way over multiple mountain ridges until they descend on Deadwood Reservoir deep in the central Idaho Mountains.

This was easily one of the best overland movies I’ve ever watched. People don’t understand how much work goes into all this filming and editing and narrating, plus the real time dialogue captures. And it really highlights some of Idaho’s wonder!!!
Thank you! I really appreciate this comment, it totally made my day. Most importantly though, I'm glad you liked the video. I hope to many more like it!
@@mrmrsd224 a commercial for what?
I too had to look up the definition of commercial... because i wasn't sure if i saw any advertisement for product/ gear/ ect...
But what do i know
This was a beautiful film, thank you!!!
Part way through the video and I’m curious is diesel fuel is available at the same places you go fuel at. I have a house near Idaho Falls and thought about doing this BDR on a bike but also have a 97 Land Cruiser that I’m thinking about swapping a diesel engine into. Thanks again for the video. Pretty cool.
Diesel is definitely spottier than gas...I think the section around yellow pine, warren, bergdorf would be hard for that...I think you can get it in Elk City, Darby, Lolo, and Pierce though.
This is super cool. I'm 50, born in Idaho, lived in Idaho about 3/4 of my life, live here now, try and see as much of its wilderness as I can. I haven't even scratched the surface. Even in heavier travelled parts of Idaho around population centers I've been to all over the state someone will tell me a spot really close that I not only haven't been to but have never heard of.
I recently went to Nevada and showed my 78 year old dad your video. (He didn't even know what UA-cam was haha.) He isn't able to go out and adventure the backcountry like he used to anymore and was amazed at the quality and information on your video. So thanks again for such an amazing video and for letting someone who loves the outdoors but isn't able to travel like he used to live vicariously through you!
What an amazing thing to read. Thank you for sharing. This is gives me so much motivation to keep making these vids!
I stumbled upon this video. I am a backcountry hunter. Carry everything with you on your back for up to 10 days. I enjoy seeing how others define back country. Everyones definition of it is different. To a city person in a civic the back country could be a groomed gravel road to a car camping site without electricity. To an Overlander its a rough trail without cell service or a way for normal vehicles to get to where they are. For a backpacker it may be 20 miles from the nearest road but still on a trail. For myself its off trail many miles from the road with nothing but whats on my back to keep me alive and happy.
Perspective is important and should be remembered when looking at others own definitions. Great video btw. Keep Adventuring
I agree with you, there are different definitions of backcountry...and I use the term in these videos knowing what a "real" backcountry excursion looks like. I have a ton of respect for those who use their own two feet and back to carry everything. I like overlanding though because you can see soooo much country in a day..but we'll never quite get to the depths of say, the Frank Church Wilderness with wheels.
This video is a love letter to the offroad and overlanding community. Nature's playground at its finest!
Thank you!!
You sir won the award for best over landing video. Certainly if there was such an award you would receive it.
There were so many elements to this video that you layered to give an extraordinary experience for us UA-cam off roaders. Well done 👍🏾
Wow - thank you so much for such a massive compliment. Seriously thank you.
First time viewer. As a Y.T. Subscriber your video was on my recommended list. After being without decent TV for over two months I just finished setting up my basement man cave with theatre chairs and HD Bravia TV. DANG! 😅 Is this a delight to see! Drone video! Color terrain, in my opinion The cliff shots indicate the face of God Himself in all His Majesty! Our Earth is wondrous! I thank you for taking me there, as at 68 I doubt I’ll ever tread on this trail.
I'm so happy to have made this video then. Knowing there are folks out there who get enjoyment and inspiration in the places we go is a massive motivator to keep making these vids. Thank you for the great comment!
A safe recovery is a solid recovery. You showed up, tried to help, stayed out of the way... and let the owners make their own call. Great job... solid getting alternative perspectives.
Native Idahoan here and I've traveled this same route several times. When your adventure is uncertain and things could go bad and you wind up Finishing your quest, THOSE are the greatest adventures!!! Great video 👍
Thank you, and great comment..I so agree with that sentiment!
You live in your own little world until you're on a mountain top. Then you start to grasp, very abysmally, how vast creation is. You realize how small and insignificant you are in time and space. It's humbling. That's why I love nature, it makes you appreciate it or it won't appreciate you being in it.
Great comment. Totally agree.
@@Venture2Roam gained a lifelong sub here. Love these long format cinematic quality videos. The algorithm played this after and AB Camping video. Keep up the good work, it's working and the algorithm sees you, but more importantly you are bringing education to the next generation of overlanders. It is so refreshing to see people where their priority is to leave the nature better than they found it before. (going one step further than leave no trace such as removing things hindering growth of nature) This means that the next generation will have a more beautiful world that we experience and if that isn't unconditional love, I'm not sure what is. Kudos!
@@iDoit4LoLz Thank you thank you thank you. You describe our ethos very well. It's about enjoying, connecting, and taking care of our amazing world.

Im just being honest here, I'm absolutely jealous of and happy for you guys. 99% of the people out there anywhere can't do what you do. Keep it up and keep saving your land for everyone. In europe we missed that. Cheers from Germany
Halo! We love Germany...headed back there with the kids next Spring. Thank yo for watching and leaving such a great comment. I agree that we are very lucky to have so much public land - it's a national treasure!!
Loved this movie guys , grew up in Twin Falls , moved to Alaska then Oregon , now Washington … have to say Idaho never disappoints … thank you 👍
Right on. Like you I grew up in Idaho, then moved away...but got to move back and I love it so much more the second time around!
Congratulations. Thank you for showing how beautiful our country is and there is so much more to see.
So glad you liked it!!
I started listening to the American Overlander podcast this summer, and today was the first time I watched your movies. I’ve had two Jeeps and they changed my life, but had to get rid of the Rubicon Recon during covid. Now I’m planning my next rig and can’t wait to explore some of these places. Until then, your movies and joy of everything exploration will get me through. Thanks!!
It's so awesome to hear you found the channel via the podcast! Hope you get a new Jeep and get back out there soon!!!
I heard you talking about how you use regular music in your videos and I’m listening now. It’s so nice to hear regular music on UA-cam. I’d love to learn how you do that!
I licensed the music through a service out of the UK called Lickd.
@@Venture2Roam radical 💪🏼 keep pumping out the wicked videos , about to finish the Idaho movie. Now!
This movie started playing when I fell asleep watching something else. Can’t believe how lucky I got to happen across it. It instantly sucked me in. I had to go back and watch the beginning I missed. Such an interesting journey and so we’ll put together for us to see. Thank you.
Thank you so much! So glad to hear YT made a good recommendation!! Really appreciate Kate this comment!!
19mins in, and I'm hooked on the story telling and narration. I love this.
Thank you so much!! Hope you check out more of our vids..lots more like this one coming soon!
I made it to Canada with you all. 😊
Onto your other videos. 😁
How amazing, y'all. My 17 year old son sent me this and said he wanted us all to do this adventure. I haven't overlanded YET, but when my son says he wants to do it, I will certainly go ALL IN as y'all did. Thank you for introducing us to this great adventure!
I LOVE reading comments like this. So cool, thanks for sharing!!!
Very well done! 👍 You are inspiring me to drive my old '68 FJ40 Land Cruiser down to Central America.( left hand drive). It has already made a trip across all of Africa (in 1973)
YES! I love those old FJ40s. If you're asking me...do it!!!!
Loved this video, my first time watching an overland video.
Right on! So glad you watched/liked it! Welcome to the world of Overlanding content!!!!
Fitting a 13 day trip into 2 hours is quite the feat! Great film Will!
Thanks man. Let's do it again!!!!

@@frontierstateoverland3816 Yes. Yes. Yes. WY has my interest at the moment though. NV too...but WY is soooo remote.

Great video. Wow! So glad we watched the entire epic trip tonight by the wood stove on a chilly night in Salem MA! Thanks!
That’s so awesome to hear! Our Nevada BDR movie should be out next week!
Awesome....I said to my wife, this is 2 hours long.....we watched the entire thing and loved it! Great job on the video, I know it's a lot of work! @@Venture2Roam
That is the best compliment I could hope for.
Excellent video and amazing storytelling. Unlike pretty much every overlanding channel, your narration is refreshingly unfiltered and it’s obvious you speak from the heart. Keep it up.
Wow thank you. That’s a very encouraging comment!!
Found this vid around 11:30 on a Sunday night. 1:45 am now. Thanks Will :)
First video of yours I have watched and I am impressed. A delightful tale from front to back. I’ve done the Salmon Valley and Lolo Pass on my Harley, but not the Overland route.
Spectacular episode! Well done Sir.
Lol. Thank you, so glad you found our channel…sorry to have kept you up 😀. Both of those drives are beautiful on paved roads too.
@@Venture2Roam As a subscriber to The Story Till Now, I giggled when I saw it was Shaun who was the villain that offered the Clamato to your friend. I think his videos are truly some of the very best edited videos on UA-cam. Yours was on par with his.
Btw, you need to add vodka or gin to the Clamato to make it a Caesar. Then it works. :)
@@kaiserman6667 It's safe to say I'm not going to drink Clamato juice again unless one of my Canadian buddies makes me a Caesar. 😝Shaun is a friend and an inspiration. Not only because he makes awesome vids..but because he make more adventure videos in two months than some channels make in a year. Super flattered you mentioned me in the same sentence!
@@Venture2Roam Just keep doing what you do. The rest all falls into place. I live not far from Shaun and he is frequently in my town but have yet to meet him.
Thanks for the conversation. I can’t even imagine the time it took to create this video and others like it. 100% class act.
Why I watch UA-cam.
You certainly are the king of touchy feely overthought one liners!! Cool video for sure, rolled my eyes a few times, yet couldn’t stop watching.
Hey it’s good to be the king of something right?? 😂 I’ll take that as a compliment! Thanks for watching!
Wow 😮 that was the best upload u guys have had! It only gets better from here . Can’t wait for tomorrow 😊
So glad you enjoyed it! Working on the Nevada BDR Movie right now. Should be out very soon.
Also glad you guys didn't opt out on the Burnt Knob side road, thats a beautiful view !

All my favorite Idahome places, and many I’ve never seen. Amazing movie! Thank you for sharing it.
Thank YOU for watching. So glad you enjoyed it!
I love this movie. You covered so much. History and food. Family and friends. You’ve helped me inspire my wife for us to take the journey to go overlanding. But further. I’ve never wanted to go to Idaho. You definitely changed that for me. Thank you for this whole experience.
What a great comment - thank you for sharing this. It totally motivates me to keep making these videos. Hope you make it Idaho!
man, what a great movie. I like the movie over the episodes format. I bet it's nice to relive these memories of your epic summer. especially now that it's getting cold and snowing decently. thanks for sharing will. looking forward to your next adventures
Thanks Jason. It was an awesome challenge putting this together in both series and feature formats. I always thought of it as one long movie...I was just texting Chris about having a watch party with him lol.
Lived in Idaho most of my life, mountains everywhere, bad place to have natural fear of heights. That said, good lifetime pursuit to push through unreasonable fear of something because we Spuds live in a place with some ridiculously indescribable views from who knows how many high places.
Well this is the best thing I’ve watched since the last episode was of Yellowstone! Well done!
I take that as very high praise. Thank you!
This was such an awesome film. As someone who loves the outdoors and nature, you did a great job capturing everything!
Thank you so much!!!
Hands down best overlanding video I've ever watched, great job.
Thank you!!
G'day guys. I'm Australian and AM totally enjoying your video. Gorgeous scenery
Thank you so much! Hop to make it over there someday.
I think it would be great if we could somehow help Aussie's enjoy the same 2A rights we have.
As a native Idahoan, I have also enjoyed some of these same remote roads. It was good to see your great adventure. Thanks for filming and sharing it.
🙌 Thank you. As a native Idahoan myself..it was an incredible experience to drive this great state on backroads...I need to go back and do it again...but maybe take a slightly different path.
This video is EPIC, the videography, live talk with the commentating over it and also the conversation on the GMRS is really incredible. You have done such a great job showing what overlanding can be while at the same time showing the vulnerability you must have to nature and mother nature. This should be a 500k subscriber channel. Please keep them coming. Well done
Thank you! That's super high praise, and it's really motivating to hear. I'm just finishing up an Oregon series that will become a feature film as well, the final vid premieres tonight at 7:30pm. What an incredible , inspiring two hours.
So glad you liked it!!
Unbelievable, Epic, Life Memories etc
These are just a few words that entered my mind while watching this documentary. You have hit this one out of the park. I’m just getting into overlanding and don’t know a thing about it and this film was by far the absolute best overlanding video I have ever watched on UA-cam or in a movie theater.
BDR needs to hire you to be their film expert. Great job
That’s like the nicest comment I think I’ve ever received. Thank you! Made my day.

Man, what a great journey. We will have to add that to one of our future to dos when we are put in that area. We just finished a 3 month trip where we left NW Georgia and headed to Ouray, Co. Then followed the continental divide trail north through wyoming and montana until we hit the Canadian border. We ended up going north from their to the Arctic and to alaska after tuktoyatuk. Then back down the stewart cassiar through washington and oregon to moab. I am glad my wife joined me with our two dogs as well. It was an epic journey as well, a once in a lifetime. We nowlan to do another 3 monther south on the continetal divide down into baja to cabo san lucas. We met Rob out at o erland Expo West when he interviewed us for our gladiator build and veteran project this past year. We did talk a little about our trip and think je was just stating to get his tundra built. I think it's great you guys get out. We need to do the same with some folks on my side and complete some of the rooutes down here in the southern portion of the Appalachian Mountains. Anyways, great trip. I really enjoyed the movie. We need to get motivated and start to post all our videos from our trip. Just wish i had had more help filming, so it's hard to do, drive, and film all by yourself.
Thank you! Wow..sounds like you've had an incredible journey or two yourself! Can't wait to see the vids.

Oh man! I can't wait to do this!. I've seen other youtuber doing this route on a motorcycle.
The route was originally created by motorcyclists, but it’s all public roads so it’s open to all capable vehicles. Hope you have a blast!!
I drove the Lolo from Lochsa north the weekend before you did. My goal was to clear as much of the road as I could over the weekend. You probably noticed that the trees were mostly clear the first half of the Lolo. That’s where I had to stop cutting. I stopped counting at 250 trees. Sorry I missed that first overhanging limb. My Jeep is a bit shorter then yours are and I was by myself so I opted to leave it since motorcycles would have been well below it. Me and a buddy also cleared from Blue Cabin to Avery of trees over 5 weekends as snow thawed. We worked from north to south on that section. Awesome movie, I appreciate all the hard work you out into this. Thank you!
You were doing God’s work. From all of us who drove those roads THANK YOU!! Next campfire I’m making a toast to you guys. Awesome work. Much appreciated.

That's super high praise, thank you! It was an incredible adventure..I dream of overlanding in SA one of these days. Hey I have zero problem with Defenders...those things are incredible..and quirky much like a Jeep. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!!
Es aidaho del centro; un poco seco el paisaje, está muy bien aquí en España.👍🏻🙋🏼♂️😎.
We were in spain last summer and loved it! ¡estuvimos en España el verano pasado y nos encantó!
This was amazing! I cannot wait to try an overland trip myself with my friends and husband!! Thank you for sharing your adventure! I loved every second of this awesome movie you guys made!!
So glad you enjoyed. Hope you have a blast getting out there!!!
Leaf springs for the win
Great video! Definitely wouldn’t consider this overlanding, more like a vacation trip
Thank you! It was a blast by any definition.
Epic Trip. I finished the AZBDR in 2022 and I've solidified the IDBDR in on my bucket list.
I'd love to do the AZBDR at some point. Glad to see Idaho's on your list now!! Thanks for taking the time to watch.
@@Venture2Roam ID has always been on my list. I was born in MTN Home and still have family there and near Boise but there is a ton of ID I still need to see. Maybe next yr or so I can take 2 weeks and come up to ID for some camping and overlanding. Maybe we can meet up and you can show me around a little?
Fantastic!!! Wonderfull!!! Big job, specialy with the all family enjoiyng. Thank you for the wonderfull and fantastic movie...ops ..videos and this travel. Without words, I would like to be on this adventure with this team! Fantastic, congratulations, well done.
Thank you so much! Hoping to make more like this in 2023!
Awesome video, man I love those s-10 I grew up driving one about the same year
Thank you!
What a fantastic video. Your camera, drone and narration skills are outstanding...and I loved seeing more of my home state...places I never got to when I lived there. I'm so glad I found your channel and I really enjoy your work. My wife and I watched this in one sitting and were blown away. She's from Glenns Ferry, I was born in Caldwell. Thanks for such a great tour. And, I enjoyed the music, especially at Burnt Knob. Well done!
Thank you so much! I’m so impressed you watched it in one sitting. I went to college (and met Kate) in Caldwell, and we’re out there all the time. Cheers!
I've seen Revere's version of this trip.. it is so cool to see your version of it. :)
Right on! They are VERY different styles lol. Rob and I were just chatting about doing another BDR together..this one was so much fun!
great video, looking forward to your next trip.
Thank you! Here's two more like it. ua-cam.com/play/PLv4WOiu-rUDD07coSDSp1WiD1u1fIYbTe.html
Will, this was just incredible. I've done the IDBDR 2x, both on 2 wheels and on 4. Your footage and editing was epic. I love that you didn't cut it too short and I love that you included radio comm. You have insane talent in putting this all together. I really enjoyed every minute of it. Thank you!
What an amazing compliment!! I take it to heart coming from someone who has done the BDR….twice! Thank you. So glad you enjoyed it. Hoping to make more like this in 2023.
Great job guys.
Thank you!!
Wow! Great job. Gotta find a way to do this! #JTRSPARTACUS
Thank you!
Thanks for this video. You're a great storyteller. I can't wait to visit Idaho someday.
So glad you liked it!! Thanks for leaving such a nice comment.
Sigur ros for the feels.... perfect choice..
I'm glad you caught that. Actually the first thing I edited in this video was the ending with that song...for me, it helped capture the feeling of joy/sadness/fatigue at the end. Love that band.
@@Venture2Roam agreed...great chronicling of your trip btw...see you out there
AWESOME VIDEO, LOVED IT 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you! So glad to hear it.
I enjoyed watching your video. It looks like ya'll had a great adventure.
Thank you! It was amazing. More coming soon!
Dude SUCH an amazing job on this!
You did a great job challenging the normal wash and rinse video structure of drive, make a meal, outro. You captured the comradery you build with the people you have adventures with, the vastness of the backcountry and the challenges it brings, and the drive for exploration.
You nailed this!
Thank you so much!!! I loved making this video..hope to make many more like it.
Loved this movie, it was awesome to watch! I gotta tell you though at 1:50:00 when you backed your jeep up. My dog out of a dead sleep woke up and shot up concerned for your vehicle! 😂
Lol 😂. That’s awesome.
