Bows are more effective against melee mobs and when you don't need to use cover. Especially with hit and run technique. Also enchantment wise. Crossbows seems to be more about killing multiple enemies with its multi shot or piercing. Piercing may be more reccommended due to its ability to bypass shields. Bows are more reccommended against singular high health enemies with its power enchantment.
This Crossbow method was actually used commonly during medieval battles to overpower archers. The crossbowmen had one companion that covered him with a shield whilst reloading. There were also those who brought with them 2 crossbows and one person to reload one of the crossbows then swapping with the crossbowmen in order to maintain a high rate of fire.

I did the math, and a bow can deal 6-8 hearts, but takes 1 second to load. A crossbow takes three, and deals 11 hearts. Even if each shot dealt 6, it would still sum up to 18 in the time it takes for the crossbow to load. However, this is only including non-enchanted versions, or taking in different types of arrows. AKA: bows have higher damage per second. How many people agree with my math: \/

Crossbows cant have infinity, making their ammo supply much more limited, and bows can't be kept charged in your inventory. The one thats better depends on what you prefer.

No with full diamond armor one shot with a harming 2 arrow with a crossbow does 9.5 hearts of damage no prot or anything and the only thing that can one shot a person with a totem is entity cramming or the void
