“Hello to everyone who viewed and will view this incredible segment on @america.
I would like to clarify a statement I made on a recent live-streamed episode regarding the original Broadway production of “The King and I.”
I misspoke when I said there were no Asian actors in the production. My intention was to communicate the low representation in the adult ensemble cast. In reality, there were indeed several incredibly talented Asian actors and dancers involved.The late great Yoriko Kikuchi danced the lead role of Eliza, Michiko played Angel, and Nancy Lynch portrayed King Simon. Among the children, Baayork Lee was little princess Ying Yaowalak, who went on to inspire so many with her Broadway career and continues to do so. Additionally, there were other children in the production.
I apologize for saying “no” when I meant to say “low” and for any confusion it may have caused.
I hold the contributions of Asian artists in the highest regard and deeply respect their vital role in the performing arts from past, present, and future
