I never wore a mask the last 4 years, but I'm assuming plenty of people have micro plastic in their lungs because of their blind compliance. No one was talking about plastic pollution during the hysteria, which I found pretty funny. Now people are acting like they care, which is even funnier.
Micro pastics are imensly important for us and the environment. I've recently been seeing a whole number of videos showcasing foods and the obserd amount of microplastic within them. I think every one should be mindful of how much plastic they use and shed away due to washing like you said. At home I try to minimize my use of plastic getting various things that I am able to reuse such as a nice durable waterbottle instead of plastic bottles. I have a few clothes from PAKA and love each and everyone of them, love what they are doing to help and hope to slowly weed out other apparel that I own for companies more sustainable. Loved the video, keep up the good work!

I have an App Gear Co hoody and I love it. I'll agree that they are slightly oversized but I'm short/skinny so I'm used to things being kind of baggy. It's extremely light, very warm, and super comfy (not itchy at all). What impresses me most is how anti-microbial the fabric is. I own other anti-microbial pieces, (ie Smartwool), and they will usually have a very slight stench to them after a weekend of backpacking, requiring a wash. The alpaca fiber doesn't smell at all. I've used mine the past 3 weekends and haven't needed to wash it at all. I was trying to get ahold of a Senchi until I pulled the trigger on the App Gear Co hoody and now I'm not even bothering.
Yup! I wore the same App Gear hoodie every morning for THREE months while training for an ultra. Soaked in sweat every day. Didn't wash it. Didn't stink!!!

Great video! I got my App Gear hoodie… love it! Yes, you are correct… it’s definitely stretchable in a good way, light weight, breathable. I’m a man got a woman’s hoodie… fits fine and I like the pattern. Also gives more options for going smaller in size. Really looking forward to this mid layer to replace my Patagonia fleece. That fleece stunk so bad on my last thru hike, so love the anti microbial properties of alpaca but more durable than merino for a mid layer. I saw lots of videos on alpaca hiking gear on UA-cam but yours was the most helpful. Thanks!

A few years ago, I had an "ah ha" moment when I realized all the lint in the dryer is from my clothes breaking down. I didn't think about the stuff that gets washed or rinsed away before it hits the dryer. I do have alpaca wool sleep socks from Foggy Bottom and they are LUXURIOUS! I don't have Instagram, sorry.
I’m also 6’2” 180lbs. I got the Appalachian gear hoodie only wore it one day, but it seems tight enough without being baggy. Hopefully they change their sizing because I hate loose clothes but right now it fits pretty well.

I shear alpacas for farmers and have endless supply of wool . At home I stuffed the kids bean bags with alpaca wool suprise how warm and comfortable they are.
I just ordered some products for them, I'm actually blown away by how much better they are compared to the typical Merino wools you find in other brands. Their products are very high quality.
Thanks for the great information. I am in the process of possibly purchasing a sweater and was looking at PAKA. As I read the info I noticed that they had nylon in the material which made me rethink the purchase. Your feedback was great. What am I doing about microplastics is informing my students about the issues their generation will face and beyond due to microplastics. In class we have cut down on plastics by encouraging students to use reusable thermos bottles to cut down our carbon footprint.
Synthetics don't belong in the environment. Also my problem with synthetic clothing in general is the funk that can develop. I've been able to get it out but it's a hassle. Plus, coming from a safety industry background I have seen petroleum based synthetic fibers melt to people's skin. I have many AGC products and like them. I keep a hoodie in my pack because you never know when you will freeze your ass, even in the summer inside, because people will crank up the a/c. Even though the cut isn't great on me, my only beef is that it smells like a wet dog when it is soaked. But I love the fact that it breathes, dries fairly fast, and is comfortable in a wide range of temps. Keep of the good fight Scott.
Yea, there are definitely pros AND cons to both synthetic and natural (animal) products. There's a LOT to consider when looking at how these things effect the environment, people, and animals. You're right, the AGC hoodie does have a distinct animal smell when damp, but that's one of the pros right, because it's natural? It's a great hoodie. Take care.
@@TheUltralightMindset 😆My wife hates the smell. Honestly, I think it abates over time. And you are correct, there are some better applications using synthetic fabrics over natural ones (right tool for the right purpose). But that's the dichotomy right?
So I believe you are saying that Paka makes more comfortable fabric to wear. What is it about the other companies, that make them less comfortable? At best, with Merino, I will wear a 17 micron or less Merino Wool.
thanks for the rant, stuff I had not considered, like the idea of filtering wash water through a filter. Will eventually get an alpaca hoodie. I agree the goal isn't just to keep buying more stuff that isn't always needed. We are not on Instagram, keep up the good work and never stop lobbying for the environment. FYI your bread bags idea is still your best recommendation for recycling something into a super functional use when outdoors, definitely saved my feet several times particularly on cycling adventures in the rain when everything was completely wetted out.
Microplastics are something I’m aware of but haven’t been too concerned about at this point. A much bigger (literally) issue is single use plastics in the environment. I’ve been working toward a zero-waste goal (I’ve only thrown out 1 bag of trash in the last year and a half, all plastic) and quickly became aware of how much plastic we use and throw away. I think I read something about a bacteria being discovered in Japan that was eating plastic, and I think the natural world will adapt to this new food source, given time. But that’s no reason to continue on our present course! And time will tell what the impacts of microplastics are on our health and the environment. I’m on my second AGC hoody (I wore out the first one because I wore it constantly) and absolutely love it!
Couldnt agree more, single use plastic is also a huge problem. We have switched out SOOO many things in our life to get away from them. The struggle is real.
So I always have a problem with my wool stuff, namely dog claws. All my merino gear because of how thin it is falls prey to my dog's claws when she jumps or steps over me. Specifically they'll grab a thread or get inbetween threads and pull them outward, making a pulled out loop that I can't like shift back into the fabric. Any of these durable enough to resist dog claws?
I no longer have Instagram. Guess I'm outta luck! 😉 Regarding microplastics, it is one of many things we need to work on to keep our water supply clean as well as the soil. It all starts at at macro level... the family making changes, each household, each community, and beyond. Small changes can make a big difference in doing the right thing. I worry more about deforestation than microplastics because it seems in my mind its like focusing on micronutrients when your not getting enough macros and in jeopardy of starving to death, theres my wet brained analogy. Dont get me wrong i think its good and agree with everything you said about microplastics, but if we cant breath the air nature will sort us out 😅 I'm going to listen to the vid again, I want an alpaca Hoodie
Microplastics is a very big problem that no one talks about. I don't know much about microplastics and will have to make myself better informed on the subject. The filters for the microplastics seem like a great idea. I have a hoodie from PACA, but have not worn it because it is heavy. I love my Appalachian Gear Company hoodie and wear it everyday. I do agree with the problem that the AGC hoodie does seem to become larger after getting wet. I look forward to more great videos from you.

Scott, micro plastic is definitely an issue. The biggest step we've done in our home is we got rid of a lot of plastic cookware in our kitchen. With regards to the Paka hoodie, how accurate was the sizing quiz on their website? Thanks for the awesome content!
Have you tried alpaca ponchos? That’s what the my did/do in the Andes. For me, armpit sweat and stick is what kills my mid layer fleeces. A poncho allows for variable venting as you please. My one concern is hiking with a backpack and the poncho. Wondering if the flowing fabric gets in the way, esp with trekking poles. I’ve ordered a variety of alpaca gear and will see which one(s) I keep and which get returned.
Any thoughts on using alpaca t-shirts during wamr hikes summer to spring? What about using Alpaca baselayers active (do not overheat) basecamp relaxing (do not get cold). In other words does it regulate temperature really well not overheating you when active and keeping you just right when sedetary?
Great question. In my experience Alpaca is an excellent insulator during active or static situations. However, it definitely has its limits in warmer temps. In my experience even the lightest Alpaca fiber I tried, was too warm above 70 degrees while moving and maybe, maybe upper 70s while hangin out. Hope that helps.
It's difficult to post a review online. I must start by saying that I love this gear. I have three hoodies and two pairs of the sweatpants. BUT! When I wash the gear, it smells awful. I contacted them and was blown off with some polite denial. Now none of the gear has been washed more than 4X bur the smell is only slowly lessening. Anyone else have this experience?
I worked outside at an international airport for nearly 20 years in brutally cold weather. Never wore a hoodie. It's a terrible look for an adult man, unless you want to blend in with a bunch of 12 yr olds going to a hockey game.
I’m definitely aware of micro plastics. We won’t know how big (or small) of a problem for a long time… health and environment can sometimes handle these things at first then hit a tipping point “all of a sudden” so time will tell! I wasn’t aware of the filter & bags, I’ll definitely look into them. Might also be worth looking into whether or not poly thread will slough micro plastic in the wash… I think it’s more filament than shed-able fiber like fleeces and other knits… but I’m no expert. Of course either way it’s more plastic that’ll eventually be in the landfill… albeit a lower volume.
Yep. And all that plastic is going to be around for a long time. It's my understanding that any synthetic, fleece, thread or otherwise will shed microplastics. Go for recycled or used synthetics, then use a bag or filter to capture the microplastics in the wash.
according to wiki Microplastics are fragments of any type of plastic less than 5 mm. so we need a filter that filters all the way down to this size at least. Plastic fabrics need to be banned out right. Once we have our filter filled with micro plastics now how do we dispose of them?
Micro plastics...well, all plastics are an issue. I have both the Paka and AppGearCo hoodies (they are local for me, just spoke w/them at the 'Get it in Gear' Fest in Black Mt. this past weekend in fact). I started first buying wool and then alpaca maybe 7-8 years ago. I try and steer clear of synthetics as much as possible. I'll check out the Arms of Andes. Not on IG or other social media unless you count Linkedin. PS I do like the Paka T-shirts and new socks. Hoping to talk the AppGear guys into doing a similar, lightweight T.
don't put the Appalachian hoodie in the dryer, stupid idea, wash it in cold water with wool soap Woolite is a good brand, wash it inside out and let it dry out on a towel and buy a smaller size that you would usually wear they are stretchy and take care of the hoodie it is expensive but a good freaking quality sweater.
Hi Scott! Thank you for the review. I found your review extremely informative. I am interested in the Paka hoodie for casual wear. There is not a lot of info out there and I was hoping you can provide some feedback on your experience. Are you still happy with your hoodie regarding durability and shape retention. I am a little worried by the length of the sweater as it looks long in the body and arms. I am 5' 5" @ 155 lbs. with an athletic build. Do you think it would be too long for me and what size would you recommend, medium or small? Also I live in San Diego, I read that you're a surfer by the way. Is the Paka hoodie breathable enough to wear in 40 - 60 F weather? I appreciate any advice you can provide. Thank you! Rod
Yea, I'm definitely happy with the hoody. It seems to be plenty durable so far. I would suggest contacting Paka for a size recommendation. Very helpful folks. This is a fairly breathable hoody, but it's also a very warm hoody. I would be comfortable wearing it in 40 - 60 degree weather just hanging out with a light layer underneath as long as Im not doing anything to create body heat. But, everyone is different, some people run hot, cold, etc. I hope that helps. Take care! -S

@@rockilikepie Well...your probably on the eight track with an App Gear Co hoodie. They tend to be a bit long in the torso and sleeves. They also stretch and get longer over time. The real question is what size. Their sizing is a bit tricky. Im 6'1 and I wear a small BUT I like my clothing a bit snug. Id say....try a large and see how that goes. I love it! It has an originality to it. There's tons of channels that have a similar name like brian hikes or adventure brian or what not. Name sets you out of that catagory. So i dig it! However, i must say, motivated by mountains was good too! But the new one is great! Describes the channel well. Keep up the good content. I've been out of the loop for a bit. Every type of fabric, synthetic or natural, has some sort of environmental and social impact. The important thing is to do A LOT of research. I havent tried anything from Duckworth.
MPs are going to be a real game changer if they turn out to be as bad as some studies indicate. And it will be a difficult transition to alternate materials to fill the vast market for plastics. I'm rarely checking Instagram, but did follow you.
There are plant based plastics. I work for a catering company feeding woodland firefighters and first responders on hurricane disasters. We use biodegradable utensils, trash bags etc. they are made using mushrooms. Durability of them is lacking but we are very mindful of our impact on landfills and ( as much as is in our power) stay away from throw away plastics to help reduce MPs.
Microplastics…hmmm, i think plastic in general is a problem but unfortunately individuals trying to mitigate the issue is like a drip of water in the ocean. It has to be attacked from the manufacturing side. Bottles alone would be a huge step. Then you’ve got all the storage containers in every industry… those 2 things alone are nuts. Asking the individual to mitigate their contribution is more easily accomplished by avoiding purchasing those things altogether. A filter is not going to make a difference unless it is put on almost every home.
Sounds like you should contact your local government and ask for some bans on single use plastic. Maybe use a filter as well. Imperfect action is better than no action.
I wonder how much MP ended up in our lungs and the environment from the plastic surgical masks. I sometimes had to use one that was visibly fraying and sheading fibers of plasric
The following comment i could make under just about any video about good hiking gear, but since this one is a lot about environmental awareness: as a guy from germany, its merely impossible to get good, ultralight gear for a reasonable price that isnt shipped all over the world. Europe really lacks good ultralight gear companies man :( i watch all these videos thinking about gear, but theres almost never a company based in germany or even europe producing products that seem to get close. All these giveaways are for US citizens only, all these prices are without the 40$ shipping and 100$ fees, i ordered an ultralight backpack and came out on over 500$...has anyone found a solition to this? Thats a great point. You're right, the transatlantic shipping cost is crazy expensive and also adds to the environmental impact. I wanted to get my Vivo Primus shoes resoled and they dont offer that service in the US yet. It would cost me more than the price of a new pair to ship them back and forth. Are you considering an Alpaca hoodie?
I bought one after watching Darwin recommend a company. It’s lightweight, airy and comfortable, although pricey. The elbows wore thin pretty quickly and now sport knitted patches. It is not all that warm, good for cool days. I would not buy another.

I got some alpaca wool socks over a decade ago. Probably wore then 100 days straight a year in Canada in the winter month's. They literally never stink. Just developed a whole finally. I am loooking at getting some real real thick relatively form fitting hoodie as a midlayer or keep me warm until about the -15-20 celcius uo until the down jackets come out when hunting. I tend to used things form as long as they last. Used my last winter jacket for 20 years straight lol. Wondering you know of any like 650 weight+ grams per meter thick lofty wool sweaters? I have seen 650 gpm merino wool sweaters but there weave is so tight they aren't lofty, don't trap much air inside, and aren't nearly as warm as those alpha socks despite those being a lofty instead of a tight weave. Harry Shearer (the guy that did a lot of voices on the Simpsons) put me up on game with micro plastics. He has a weekly podcast called Le Show and a segment where he talks about plastics and their effect on our environment and subsequently, humans.
The fact that we will each consume around 20kg of micro plastics in our lifetime blows my mind. It’s literally in everything we eat and drink. Humans…….
I am completely against plastics in every form of it. I knit hiking garments myself from 100% wool. However, I think it makes zero sense to transmit responsibility to users in terms of plastic pollution. When factories with the scale of billions tons of plastic production release all that first to the market, and then throw the waste to nature. When I go to the supermarket and even bananas are packed in plastic, it just makes a clear conclusion that the source of pollution is not people. Its the companies and the regulations on top of them which are absent. When it comes to washing your own clothing, you are buying the filter that is made of plastic itself, which means there was a huge tone of plastic waste released to the ocean when producing those filters. I find it stupid and pointless. Also, I am a knitter and I know everything about yarn production. Superwash merino and polyester that is often used in yarns create A TONE of liquid plastic, which is simply washed away back to nature. Nobody stops them. they keep producing yarn, garments, and products in a billion quantities daily. Buying a filter for a washing machine makes no sense, besides making rich the brand who created that filter. Governments and companies simply created sustainability trends and brainwashed people, so they feel they should change their behavior, when in reality they make us buy even more plastic (water filters an example), and they keep making money killing the earth. To change that, the only way is the regulations on top of the companies to stop using plastics which is impossible because it drives money and economy overall.
The Paka hoodie is incredible SOFT , it's not 100 % alpaca 🤷♂️put in the other H 🖐nd you can washed 40° celsius with out any concern . be careful one size down ✌️

I'm allergic to down and alpaca, so have to stick to wools sprayed with a silicone spray on outlayer to keep warm and dry

Synthetics don't belong in the environment. Also my problem with synthetic clothing in general is the funk that can develop. I've been able to get it out but it's a hassle. Plus, coming from a safety industry background I have seen petroleum based synthetic fibers melt to people's skin. I have many AGC products and like them. I keep a hoodie in my pack because you never know when you will freeze your ass, even in the summer inside, because people will crank up the a/c. Even though the cut isn't great on me, my only beef is that it smells like a wet dog when it is soaked. But I love the fact that it breathes, dries fairly fast, and is comfortable in a wide range of temps. Keep of the good fight Scott.
Yea, there are definitely pros AND cons to both synthetic and natural (animal) products. There's a LOT to consider when looking at how these things effect the environment, people, and animals. You're right, the AGC hoodie does have a distinct animal smell when damp, but that's one of the pros right, because it's natural? It's a great hoodie.

So I believe you are saying that Paka makes more comfortable fabric to wear. What is it about the other companies, that make them less comfortable? At best, with Merino, I will wear a 17 micron or less Merino Wool.
I think its the blend of polly and Alpaca that makes it slightly more smooth and comfortable.

thanks for the rant, stuff I had not considered, like the idea of filtering wash water through a filter. Will eventually get an alpaca hoodie. I agree the goal isn't just to keep buying more stuff that isn't always needed. We are not on Instagram, keep up the good work and never stop lobbying for the environment. FYI your bread bags idea is still your best recommendation for recycling something into a super functional use when outdoors, definitely saved my feet several times particularly on cycling adventures in the rain when everything was completely wetted out.

Microplastics are something I’m aware of but haven’t been too concerned about at this point. A much bigger (literally) issue is single use plastics in the environment. I’ve been working toward a zero-waste goal (I’ve only thrown out 1 bag of trash in the last year and a half, all plastic) and quickly became aware of how much plastic we use and throw away. I think I read something about a bacteria being discovered in Japan that was eating plastic, and I think the natural world will adapt to this new food source, given time. But that’s no reason to continue on our present course! And time will tell what the impacts of microplastics are on our health and the environment.
I’m on my second AGC hoody (I wore out the first one because I wore it constantly) and absolutely love it!
Couldnt agree more, single use plastic is also a huge problem. We have switched out SOOO many things in our life to get away from them. The struggle is real.
So I always have a problem with my wool stuff, namely dog claws. All my merino gear because of how thin it is falls prey to my dog's claws when she jumps or steps over me. Specifically they'll grab a thread or get inbetween threads and pull them outward, making a pulled out loop that I can't like shift back into the fabric. Any of these durable enough to resist dog claws?
Id say the AOA would be your best bet. Tightest weave.
I no longer have Instagram. Guess I'm outta luck! 😉 Regarding microplastics, it is one of many things we need to work on to keep our water supply clean as well as the soil. It all starts at at macro level... the family making changes, each household, each community, and beyond. Small changes can make a big difference in doing the right thing. Nobody wants that in their lungs!

I worry more about deforestation than microplastics because it seems in my mind its like focusing on micronutrients when your not getting enough macros and in jeopardy of starving to death, theres my wet brained analogy. Dont get me wrong i think its good and agree with everything you said about microplastics, but if we cant breath the air nature will sort us out 😅 I'm going to listen to the vid again, I want an alpaca Hoodie

Microplastics is a very big problem that no one talks about. I don't know much about microplastics and will have to make myself better informed on the subject. The filters for the microplastics seem like a great idea.
I have a hoodie from PACA, but have not worn it because it is heavy. I love my Appalachian Gear Company hoodie and wear it everyday. I do agree with the problem that the AGC hoodie does seem to become larger after getting wet. I look forward to more great videos from you.

Scott, micro plastic is definitely an issue. The biggest step we've done in our home is we got rid of a lot of plastic cookware in our kitchen. With regards to the Paka hoodie, how accurate was the sizing quiz on their website? Thanks for the awesome content!
I haven't used the quiz, but I find the hoodies to be large compared to the recommendations.
Have you tried alpaca ponchos? That’s what the my did/do in the Andes. For me, armpit sweat and stick is what kills my mid layer fleeces. A poncho allows for variable venting as you please. My one concern is hiking with a backpack and the poncho. Wondering if the flowing fabric gets in the way, esp with trekking poles. I’ve ordered a variety of alpaca gear and will see which one(s) I keep and which get returned.

Any thoughts on using alpaca t-shirts during wamr hikes summer to spring? What about using Alpaca baselayers active (do not overheat) basecamp relaxing (do not get cold). In other words does it regulate temperature really well not overheating you when active and keeping you just right when sedetary?
Great question. In my experience Alpaca is an excellent insulator during active or static situations. However, it definitely has its limits in warmer temps. In my experience even the lightest Alpaca fiber I tried, was too warm above 70 degrees while moving and maybe, maybe upper 70s while hangin out. Hope that helps.

It's difficult to post a review online. I must start by saying that I love this gear. I have three hoodies and two pairs of the sweatpants. BUT! When I wash the gear, it smells awful. I contacted them and was blown off with some polite denial. Now none of the gear has been washed more than 4X bur the smell is only slowly lessening. Anyone else have this experience?

I’m definitely aware of micro plastics. We won’t know how big (or small) of a problem for a long time… health and environment can sometimes handle these things at first then hit a tipping point “all of a sudden” so time will tell! I wasn’t aware of the filter & bags, I’ll definitely look into them. Might also be worth looking into whether or not poly thread will slough micro plastic in the wash… I think it’s more filament than shed-able fiber like fleeces and other knits… but I’m no expert. Of course either way it’s more plastic that’ll eventually be in the landfill… albeit a lower volume.
Yep. And all that plastic is going to be around for a long time. It's my understanding that any synthetic, fleece, thread or otherwise will shed microplastics. Go for recycled or used synthetics, then use a bag or filter to capture the microplastics in the wash.

according to wiki Microplastics are fragments of any type of plastic less than 5 mm. so we need a filter that filters all the way down to this size at least. Plastic fabrics need to be banned out right. Once we have our filter filled with micro plastics now how do we dispose of them?
Micro plastics...well, all plastics are an issue. I have both the Paka and AppGearCo hoodies (they are local for me, just spoke w/them at the 'Get it in Gear' Fest in Black Mt. this past weekend in fact). I started first buying wool and then alpaca maybe 7-8 years ago. I try and steer clear of synthetics as much as possible. I'll check out the Arms of Andes.

don't put the Appalachian hoodie in the dryer, stupid idea, wash it in cold water with wool soap Woolite is a good brand, wash it inside out and let it dry out on a towel and buy a smaller size that you would usually wear they are stretchy and take care of the hoodie it is expensive but a good freaking quality sweater.

There is not a lot of info out there and I was hoping you can provide some feedback on your experience. Are you still happy with your hoodie regarding durability and shape retention. I am a little worried by the length of the sweater as it looks long in the body and arms. I am 5' 5" @ 155 lbs. with an athletic build. Do you think it would be too long for me and what size would you recommend, medium or small? Also I live in San Diego, I read that you're a surfer by the way. Yea, I'm definitely happy with the hoody. It seems to be plenty durable so far. I would suggest contacting Paka for a size recommendation. Very helpful folks. This is a fairly breathable hoody, but it's also a very warm hoody. I would be comfortable wearing it in 40 - 60 degree weather just hanging out with a light layer underneath as long as Im not doing anything to create body heat. But, everyone is different, some people run hot, cold, etc. I hope that helps. Take care!

@@rockilikepie Well...your probably on the eight track with an App Gear Co hoodie. They tend to be a bit long in the torso and sleeves. They also stretch and get longer over time. The real question is what size. Their sizing is a bit tricky. Im 6'1 and I wear a small BUT I like my clothing a bit snug. Id say....try a large and see how that goes. Interesting point but for me the very very tiny amount of moisture that the very very minimal amount of cotton thread might hold is negligible.

Every type of fabric, synthetic or natural, has some sort of environmental and social impact. The important thing is to do A LOT of research. I havent tried anything from Duckworth.

MPs are going to be a real game changer if they turn out to be as bad as some studies indicate. And it will be a difficult transition to alternate materials to fill the vast market for plastics.

There are plant based plastics. I work for a catering company feeding woodland firefighters and first responders on hurricane disasters. We use biodegradable utensils, trash bags etc. they are made using mushrooms. Durability of them is lacking but we are very mindful of our impact on landfills and ( as much as is in our power) stay away from throw away plastics to help reduce MPs.
Microplastics…hmmm, i think plastic in general is a problem but unfortunately individuals trying to mitigate the issue is like a drip of water in the ocean. It has to be attacked from the manufacturing side. Bottles alone would be a huge step. Then you’ve got all the storage containers in every industry… those 2 things alone are nuts. Asking the individual to mitigate their contribution is more easily accomplished by avoiding purchasing those things altogether. A filter is not going to make a difference unless it is put on almost every home.
Sounds like you should contact your local government and ask for some bans on single use plastic. Maybe use a filter as well. Imperfect action is better than no action.

The following comment i could make under just about any video about good hiking gear, but since this one is a lot about environmental awareness: as a guy from germany, its merely impossible to get good, ultralight gear for a reasonable price that isnt shipped all over the world. Europe really lacks good ultralight gear companies man :( i watch all these videos thinking about gear, but theres almost never a company based in germany or even europe producing products that seem to get close. All these giveaways are for US citizens only, all these prices are without the 40$ shipping and 100$ fees, i ordered an ultralight backpack and came out on over 500$...has anyone found a solition to this? Thats a great point. You're right, the transatlantic shipping cost is crazy expensive and also adds to the environmental impact. I wanted to get my Vivo Primus shoes resoled and they dont offer that service in the US yet. It would cost me more than the price of a new pair to ship them back and forth. Are you considering an Alpaca hoodie?
I bought one after watching Darwin recommend a company. It’s lightweight, airy and comfortable, although pricey. The elbows wore thin pretty quickly and now sport knitted patches. It is not all that warm, good for cool days. I would not buy another.

I got some alpaca wool socks over a decade ago. Probably wore then 100 days straight a year in Canada in the winter month's. They literally never stink. Just developed a whole finally. I am loooking at getting some real real thick relatively form fitting hoodie as a midlayer or keep me warm until about the -15-20 celcius uo until the down jackets come out when hunting. I tend to used things form as long as they last. Used my last winter jacket for 20 years straight lol.
Wondering you know of any like 650 weight+ grams per meter thick lofty wool sweaters? I have seen 650 gpm merino wool sweaters but there weave is so tight they aren't lofty, don't trap much air inside, and aren't nearly as warm as those alpha socks despite those being a lofty instead of a tight weave.

I am completely against plastics in every form of it. I knit hiking garments myself from 100% wool. However, I think it makes zero sense to transmit responsibility to users in terms of plastic pollution. When factories with the scale of billions tons of plastic production release all that first to the market, and then throw the waste to nature. When I go to the supermarket and even bananas are packed in plastic, it just makes a clear conclusion that the source of pollution is not people. Its the companies and the regulations on top of them which are absent.
When it comes to washing your own clothing, you are buying the filter that is made of plastic itself, which means there was a huge tone of plastic waste released to the ocean when producing those filters. I find it stupid and pointless. Also, I am a knitter and I know everything about yarn production. Superwash merino and polyester that is often used in yarns create A TONE of liquid plastic, which is simply washed away back to nature. Nobody stops them. they keep producing yarn, garments, and products in a billion quantities daily. Buying a filter for a washing machine makes no sense, besides making rich the brand who created that filter.
Governments and companies simply created sustainability trends and brainwashed people, so they feel they should change their behavior, when in reality they make us buy even more plastic (water filters an example), and they keep making money killing the earth.
To change that, the only way is the regulations on top of the companies to stop using plastics which is impossible because it drives money and economy overall.
I agree 100% that almost everything we do has some sort of negative impact on our planet. Is the wool you use from your sheep?
The Paka hoodie is incredible SOFT , it's not 100 % alpaca 🤷♂️put in the other H 🖐nd you can washed 40° celsius with out any concern . be careful one size down ✌️
