If you use a good quality soldering iron, with a fine tip, you can basically install the new connector using only the soldering iron. This way you are less likely to destroy it by excessive heat.
@@Zendarkos depends on your skill and steadiness with (regular) tweezers vs the iron. Some people are really steady, precise and swift with tweezers, but not with soldering iron or hot soldering tweezers. If you're one of those, using only hot air and regular tweezers, can yield just as good results. As Jessa points out here, if you're sensible about the temperature, you won't damage the plastic as long as you only touch and manipulate it by the beefy ground retaining tabs at each end.
I do it exactly like you do apart from when iv re added solder I don't add any to the anchors. I only do that as iv found on some connectors the big anchor pads can take too much solder which stops the connector touching the regular pins properly. Il then go and solder the anchors after once the other pins are done. Your station is better than mine so prob removes the solder from the anchors a bit better than my cheap one :) , as I find it a ball ache to remove once added. Then I just do the same as you and go over each joint. Seems to do the job.
My personal approach is safer in my opinion. I like to destroy the old connector with a soldering iron and then remove its old bits. Then I clean the board with a soldering iron and solder wick, then I install a new connector using only the soldering iron. I think it minimizes the amount of heat applied to the board, reducing the risks of any damage.
Question: I see both you and Louis Rossman use flux on connectors but there is rosin (flux) core solders so I wondering if you use flux by default because it aids in the soldering process or do you use rosin core solder on certain parts only? As an electronics tech I tend to use flux when I have more than one connection to work on. If it's a single side like a cap or resister I use rosin core solder to reduce the cleanup later.
Awesome video jessa, it's very much appreciated that you are making these. I am a tech at a small repair shop and I have plenty of problems where there is board level repair needed and we have to send it off for fixes. Cannot wait to be able to do these repairs myself as we have a whole solder station and noone to do the repairs!
I went through 5 connectors the first time I did one (ipad air 2 dig) but I am starting to get the hang of it. I only used 2 connectors last time....definitely a skill that has to be learned by doing it...Great video! Also can you guys please source some good iPad 3D BGA stencils? I would really like some especially for ipad air 2 and can't seem to find a good set anywhere...I will buy them as soon as you put them up in your store!
I sent my son's ipad mini to your store on 12/14/18 to have the logic board connector replaced. Thank you for helping to repair it, you've made my son very happy. I will say for anyone hesitant on repairing their devices, iPad Rehab did a wonderful job, I had my device back in less than 10 days (and it was just before Christmas ) and the price was right. Thank you again!! I will absolutely use again and will recommend to others. Happy New Year from Chattanooga, Tennessee!
Hey Katie--thanks! We'd love a copy/paste of your review on iPad Rehab Google page so that other folks can see it. We got a troll review today that it would be nice to bury :(
Hello, would you help me to know the name of this equipment that you look through, to amplify the mainboard, like a microscope. I'd like to know the proper name. I thank you so much for the video and the answer.
I had troubles soldering SODIMM connector to my prototype PCB - RPI CM3 carrier board. It looks like this technique (put tin on pcb first and then presolder with hot air) will solve my problem! Thank you for the video! Keep it up!
I watch you do the board repair and I miss working on those. I need a job fixing PCB's Nobody seems to fix electronics anymore except cell phones and tablets.
good day ma'am... what's the name of the flat wire that you scratch to clean to connector...i hope, you will answer me ma'am... thank you very much ..God bless ang more power...☺️🤗🤗
Is there any tip adjustment to the hakko mini hot tweezers? The pivot screw seems, reasonably tight, but can't see any point of adjustments. I got a proper, matching T9-I set from official distributor (well over $100 around here), but the tips don't meet properly. Have to put significant sideways force at the same time as clamping them, otherwise the tips, are like at least 0.15-.2mmm off from meeting as intended. Making it really hard to get a grip on smds, and even worse keeping the grip. Because they slip off one end, and because the force exerted to push the yellow hinged portion sideways, induce small tremors, attenuated at the tweezer tips.
Please do not suck your nose in front of the board... corona virus dangerous to the pcb😄☺ thank you for your videos and your knowledges you share... and many hallo from Greece😉😉😉
my iphone 6 plus had a problem. it happened when i try to replace the back cam of my phone. when im pulling up the flex cable i damage the fpc. the fpc that i damaged was the touch on board and now idk where and how to fix it. and my signal had a problem too. it just show no signal, maybe the parts that need to replace there is either the gps or wifi antenna or maybe both. 😭😭😭 hope u can help
Love your videos, I've got to renew fpc connector never done this before but I have all the equipment to do this, I know you don't but can I put heat tape all around the connector so I don't get any other components dislodge kind regards colin from croydon surrey England, ps I have spair logic boards to practice on first
I can not solder for nuts so wanted to know if you provide this service. I successfully damaged the LCD FPC connector on my moto Z4 and would like to get it replaced.

Hi dear, i am very much impressed while watching this video. But, i have facing a problem while i connect lcd strip into strip connector in Projector (Epson ELP 7600), Connector locking pin has broken and miss led. Kindly suggest and oblige.
What is a reasonably safe temperature range here for a capable unit (ie. the typical Quick, Atten etc) - are we talking 375'C, or more in the 250'C range?
Your my favourite technician to watch anything to do and repair iphones, no messing, no time wasting and straight to the point , love you kind regards colin from croydon surrey England 👍👍👍👍👍❤
Where would it be possible to buy these connectors? I accidentally broke 3 pins off the volume and lightning connector. Its the 18pin one next to the lcd connectors.
can anyone help me? ?i have a 6s that wont charge past a certain amount of battery percentage. what part of the board is damaged or needs replacing? secondly, if i have another board, which part of the logic board do i have to swap over to the working board to bring over the unlocked apple id part
I have an iPhone 6 plus that a repair shop messed up. I've been doing the simple LCD switch out that anyone can do but would like to try to learn how to solder. Should I learn on the motherboard of another spare device I have laying around and send this into you guys? Or learn and do this phone?
Hi Jessa, I cannot seem to get the solder to reflow no matter what I do. I am using sn62 tin/lead solder and a hot air temp of 380. Can you advise which solder is best to get reflow?
Hello everyone in the comment section, it's my first time fixing one of those issues with iPhones, and I have a question about it, because i find the missing pin on the LCD connector and I don't know if this problem cause a short circuit that warms the logic board once it's turned on. So I wanted to know if someone had a response to this because I don't know if this missing pin cause the short circuit
If you have to adjust the temperature on your reflow station because the air termperature is not consistent, why not use a separate meter with a thermocouple probe to verify the air temperature instead of having to guess.
ipad rehab have you tried with the WD-40 I use it to desolder and solder the connector protects the plastic and does not burn the heat the best you do not need to use the captive to align it only aligns the new connector applies heat and ready the connector is accommodated alone and it is perfect alguin day test greetings
Since it’s leaded solder and stronger than unleaded, would it be adequate to simply add some solder to the corners once the new connector is put on rather than adding solder to each of the contact pads?
excellent instructional video ! very detailed and well explained, tips.......... perfect. And NO annoying music ! someone actually talking
Detailed? How do you open it? haha
Your great thank you for your time!!!
Does the data/files from logic board get erased after replacing the board connector?
No
I want training how much
Man you have skills, I ordered 5 - 6s connectors for a practice board and have used 4 up already. 1 left now I am gonna nail it lol....
Did you eventually buy Apple instead?
