Lovely review and a very clear message. Education is the way forward and l hope many more people watch this video. We'll done.
Nice! Great video and such a valuable message. I just HOPE that more people who camp not just wild campers, watch this and learn how to respect our precious environment
Another tip. Use a spoon and ditch the knife and fork to save weight. Use a penknife for cutting. A 'Tupperware' type box serves as a food container and as a washbasin for ablutions. Stuff sacks are a waste of space and sleeping bags inside a bin liner uses up all the corners of the pack. A 2.5 liter drink bottle will hold enough water for an overnight stop and a quick wash in the morning if you're careful. This will fit inside the pack and a smaller one 500ml in your pocket for daytime sips. I see no point in plastic bags in your pack with tubes, whatever they are called, for this purpose. A stiff aluminium foil wind shield is also a must. Offset printing plates are ideal if you can get them.

Hi. I am not originally from the UK but I love British national parks. I have done your B29 plane crash site (Peak district) walk last week, and as you did it I started it from the Snake Pass parking lot, went into the forest to the Lady clough, and used the Pennine way up to the crash site. Just wanted to say thank you! Your blog post and video helped me immensely in planning my walk.
Loved how clear and informative this video is, while I am trying to pick up the nerve to go out into the wild. No trace left behind- yes. Could you do one about the foods you make when backpacking ?
Great video, I have been hiking and camping for 35 years and with vidios like this and UA-cam these days you can enter the hoby at a good level inexpensively. 🍻👍
Awesome Video mate. If you make another one it would be awesome if you would also talk about going to the "toilet" in the outdoors. (staying away from water, digging a deep enough cat hole, and packing out toilet-paper if the local climate requires it) in more popular areas this starts to be a real problem, and a lot of newer backpackers are not aware of this.
Hi mate, thanks a lot for the feedback I'm glad you enjoyed it! In hindsight I absolutely should have included this in the video, and I have no idea why I didn't to be honest. Sometimes things get forgotten about in the filming and editing process. I will next time 👍 - Tom
Love the foggy weather here, much much more than I'd love sun. Great video, thanks! Maybe someday I will finally get the courage to start camping this way
A little tip from us, if it's damp like this, there is little point carefully packing certain stuff away as you will only have to unpack it again for drying when you get home.
I have had my first wild camping on 1st of January this year (2021), I never thought of doing it, but when then lockdowns kicked in, people began to get scared of meeting each other... I was looking for something I could do on my own, and lo behold, wild camping UA-cam channels began to pop up. At first these were American and Canadian channels but then I was wondering if its actually popular in the UK, and here I am I have found quite few of them, including yours. So when I did my first ever wild camping, I went to a nearby forest, did 3 hours scouting and I was shocked how much rubbish I found while searching for the best spot. There was even a half buried damaged tent, plastic and glass bottles, plastic containers, some plastic bags filled with something that I wasn't keen to open any of those, who knows what was inside and how long these plastic bags were there. I brought with me few rubbish bags to make sure I take the rubbish back with me, it is upsetting to see that people don't care to clean after themselves, making people think that all the "wild campers" are like that, shame on you.
With the increase in fire scars and trash we've seen recently this message needs to be spread far and wide. Applaud your effort. Just love the Marsden Moors 👍
I’ m surprised you didn’t talk about that great pack you have since you mentioned the other items. That pack is fantastic especially at such a great price.
Hi there, my bad if you felt I ahould have talked more about it! I didnt want to get into too much detail about each item, just a really brief overview. If you have any questions about any of the gear feel free to ask, I will always do my best to reply!
Great video mate very informative and a straight forward no BS as other you tubers have nothing worse than people babbling on about crap that’s not needed
The forest beckons us, fills our thoughts. You can't stay at home anymore! You literally rip your jacket and backpack off the rack. You go on a journey where there are no people, and nature is especially beautiful. The smell of last year's wet needles and leaves is carried by warm air, which permeates you with a strong stream. You cannot get enough of it. The forest accepts us as we are. We are his guests, not his hosts. And we are grateful to him. How can it be boring for someone in this world to look at a drawing of veins on a green leaf for several hours?
Hi. New to your channel and just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to encourage and promote Leave No Trace principles. I don’t know if it’s just me but there seems to be a proliferation on UA-cam of people filming themselves walking and wild camping or whatever but only a few of them actually take the time and effort to talk about it. There are lots and lots of comments from people saying they’ve been inspired to go wild camping as a result of the videos they’ve just watched but I am torn: on the one hand it’s great that people are taking exercise, enjoying fresh air, doing something new etc but on the other hand I’m concerned that with ever greater numbers going to the same spots they see on the videos that the impact will be detrimental to us all in the long term. Inconsiderate parking, rubbish, fire pits leaving unsightly marks on the ground and the increase risk of wildfires, human excrement and tissue paper left everywhere, damage to property and the negative impact on the environment due to erosion of footpaths etc may see landowners, authorities etc press for greater restrictions and outright bans on the things we love to do. There is proposed legislation going through Home Office consultation at the moment to criminalise trespass which may incorporate wild campers although not the intended target of the proposed legislation. The COVID situation has encouraged the increase of “fly camping” which is totally not the same as responsible wild camping but the press and the general public seem to conflate the two adding fuel to the fire. So again I thank you for encouraging individual responsibility and making the effort to educate and inform.
Sound olicy. A good chance learn a valuable familiarity with the way the rest of your kit works, and possibly revealing some changes you might like to make before committing to your first solo run. Good luck.
An important message to all wild campers. Leave no trace. Trekology make great affordable kit. Everyone has their own system for their gear. Particularly like the transparent zip lock bag. Great tip. ATB Chris
Tbf this was perfect. Im thinking about starting to build some kit to start wild camping next year. Most of the other similar videos involve expensive branded kit and lots of unnecessary items. This video was clear, to the point and shows that expensive kit is only a personal choice not a necessity. A thumbs up from me 👍
I'm glad you found it useful Mark! Please do let me know if there are any further video ideas you would like to see, I would love to make this more of a two-way channel. Tom
Excellent video fella! I did my first wild camp back in September on Cadair Idris, Snowdonia. I've been spending majority of my life outdoors and in recent years doing landscape, astro and wildlife photography. But I made the decision this year to include some wild camping in those adventures, and honestly, I've never been happier! It's such an awesome thing to be able to do. Our pack seems to be quite similar, albeit mines likely heavier with the camera gear I carry about. But apart from that I think they're very similar indeed. Brilliant video mate, look forward to catching more in the future.
Ive no idea why you've got 67 dislikes. I really rate your videos. Super chilled, nice sounds, really well done. Totally agree with the message, we're in Keswick and the amount of litter from camping has been mental. keep up the good work.
A reusable cable-tie can also be used to keep your roll-up mat secure. I didn't even know they existed 'til recently! Excellent video btw. Keep on motoring!!!
I converted to the hammock. It's small, lightweight and easy to set up. I like the woods personally so it's ideal. I did 4 days in the peaks not long back and although I just cold bum syndrome on a couple of days, it was bliss.
@@MalteBroberg You know, the woods have always been my happy place. More resources. The mountains are beautiful, but in the UK you just don't get that many resources up there.
Great Video :) Concise and to the point which is exactly what I want to see on this subject. Your sleep matt looks awsome. I'll be looking into that! I love Alpkit stuff too. Thanks for posting product names and accurately demonstrating pack sizes (this is a huge concern for me as an ultralight motorcycle camper). Great vid. Liked.
A good vid, I like how you have used ‘cheaper’ gear. That should get people outdoors and enjoying themselves. The ‘better’ and more expensive gear will be found as they progress. It’s good to get out into the hills, cost of gear shouldn’t be ‘preventitive’. Thank you.
I laughed out loud when I saw the glass bottle. Priority is pleasure not weight. His gear is for beginners who don't want to spend a fortune. Enjoy nature anyway you can
It pains me to see my local forests and side roads littered. It’s become so much worse over the years and they even started removing campsites because people trash the place. I like going no less than about 25 miles into national forrest anytime I camp.
I also decided to finally hit the trails and go camping this year ! Done it 5 times so far since June! I’ve been planning for years but it was until this year with COVID that I said enough, you gotta get out of here into nature, best decision ever and will slowly upgrade my gear and keep doing it
That is awesome! Glad you managed to finally get out and do the things you have been planning for. Yes, build up the gear and buy new gear when you can afford / when you need it. I wish you all the best for this year - Take care - Tom.
I've been looking for a better pad for sleeping. I've been using a Therm-a-Rest for years, but it's only 5 cm thick on a good day, and since I'm heavier than the average hiker, it's not been particularly comfortable. The Trekology one looks great, and price is far below what I was expecting to pay. Thanks!
Just placed my order. If it's not comfortable, I'm holding you personally responsible! Just kidding! I'm excited, actually, and my back feels better already.
@@alexgirlan9542 I haven't used it camping yet, but I suspect since it's just an air mattress with no foam inside, the R-value is pretty bad (I don't know if high or low R-values are good). So I suspect you just need some extra insulation from the ground in cold weather. It is definitely comfortable. I tried it out on my concrete patio and I was totally comfortable. I weigh about 245, so I need a fairly thick pad or my hips and shoulders (side sleeper) will be on the ground. This fits the bill. I'll report back after I go camping next month.
Thanks for the helpful feedback Davey! Yes its the 4 season inner good spot. I really like it, I have a lanshan 1 with a 3 season inner and I much prefer the 4. Even ordered a 4 season for the lanshan 1 from Aliexpress. Thanks again - Take care, Tom.

Love it! Leave no trace is the best 👌 I hate seeing rubbish on a walk. Well done 👍
Leave no trace is the only way my friend. Thanks for the support ! 👍 Take care - Tom
I echo the comments on here 👏
Let's get this message out far & wide, along with #ileavenotrace . Excellent video 👍atb
John.
Thanks for your comment John! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Take care - Tom
This is a great video - simply put, but with an important message, Thanks for this.
My pleasure! - Tom
Lovely video and well filmed, I hope your channel grows!
Thanks so much for the support! I hope so too! Take care - Tom
Tbf this was perfect. Im thinking about starting to build some kit to start wild camping next year. Most of the other similar videos involve expensive branded kit and lots of unnecessary items. This video was clear, to the point and shows that expensive kit is only a personal choice not a necessity. A thumbs up from me 👍
Brilliant, absolutely spot on. Subbed instantly.
Thanks a lot Andy! Really glad ypu enjoyed it and thanks for the sub! Take care mate
Pleasantly straightforward vlog...does what it says on the tin, and lovely and chilled too. 👍
Very helpful feedback thank you! That's the aim for many of my videos so its nice to see it translate. - Take care, Tom.
Awesome buddy .. well enjoyed.. cheers Chris & Sam
What a beautiful video. I came for the walk-through and stayed for both that and the aesthetics.
Lovely well put together informative video. I'm now a seasoned veteran wild camper of 4 wild camps 😆 and I've found this really good
I'm glad you found it useful Mark! Please do let me know if there are any further video ideas you would like to see, I would love to make this more of a two-way channel. Tom
Good video. Not sure why anyone would dislike this.
Very good vid even after 40yrs camping wild or otherwise I still learnt something thank you
I really enjoyed the video Tom, I subbed simply because of this video and because you didn't ask me to, which I appreciate hugely:)
Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it ☺️
Same! thanks Tom
A reusable cable-tie can also be used to keep your roll-up mat secure. I didn't even know they existed 'til recently!
Excellent video btw. Keep on motoring!!!
I've just had a really stressful morning and this was perfect for coming back down to earth. Cheers!
Hope your day got better 👍🏻
Glad to hear it! Really happy that you enjoyed it that much. Take care - Tom
Just a stressful "morning"? Not worth complaining.
k
I converted to the hammock. It's small, lightweight and easy to set up. I like the woods personally so it's ideal.
I did 4 days in the peaks not long back and although I just cold bum syndrome on a couple of days, it was bliss.
Hammocks are great! Unless you hike in the mountains with no trees
Great vid. Liked.
Hi from north Lancashire. Typical weather😄. Liked the MESSAGE & factual narration without bull.
Good stuff, well done 👍 more we push this message the better ATB Phil
Thanks a lot Phil! Take care mate - Tom
Love your no nonsense approach, a really clear video. Very well done. You come across chilled! Will look forward to the next video tom
Thanks a lot for the feedback im glad you get that vibe! definitely what I am aiming for! Take care
really happy to see my loved lanshan2 on the trail!!
There is no better option for a lightweight 3 season tent than the lanshan!!!
@FrecK How does it do in high winds? Anyone knows? Thanks
A good vid, I like how you have used ‘cheaper’ gear. That should get people outdoors and enjoying themselves. The ‘better’ and more expensive gear will be found as they progress. It’s good to get out into the hills, cost of gear shouldn’t be ‘preventitive’. Thank you.
I usually put my wine in a plastic bottle as glass is heavy.
I laughed out loud when I saw the glass bottle. Priority is pleasure not weight. His gear is for beginners who don't want to spend a fortune. Enjoy nature anyway you can
A nice reminder and a good overview of what sort of kit to take.
Thanks Tony, have a good weekend. - Tom
Well spoken common sense. Well done.
Nice video , to the point and minimal waffle , great info for a newbie wild camper like myself . Thank you .
Well said, hopefully some people listen to you
Wow. Great handy tips. I especially like the leave no trace policy.
Respect to you sir , you've earned yourself a sub from me and I tip my metaphorical cap to you x
Thanks a lot Matthew I really appreciate it. Thanks for the support it means a lot! More to come shortly. Take care - Tom
Excellent tips an great to see that you are a responsible camper.
I’ve just got one as well. I’m wondering how essential is the foam roller mat underneath for insulation? Are you using something like this?
@@alexgirlan9542 I haven't used it camping yet, but I suspect since it's just an air mattress with no foam inside, the R-value is pretty bad (I don't know if high or low R-values are good). So I suspect you just need some extra insulation from the ground in cold weather. It is definitely comfortable. I tried it out on my concrete patio and I was totally comfortable. I weigh about 245, so I need a fairly thick pad or my hips and shoulders (side sleeper) will be on the ground. This fits the bill. I'll report back after I go camping next month.
@@scottplumer3668 it’s only like 1.6 R rating which is bad another mat underneath would be a must for anything below 10 degrees tbh
I liked the lanshan 2 .Noted it had the 4 season inner . Also liked the idea of alcahol stoves .Also your message was clear and well put. Well done .
Thanks for the helpful feedback Davey! Yes its the 4 season inner good spot. I really like it, I have a lanshan 1 with a 3 season inner and I much prefer the 4. Even ordered a 4 season for the lanshan 1 from Aliexpress. Thanks again - Take care, Tom.
wow you use a towel to sometimes dry things that have gotten wet? thats revolutionary stuff
I'm full of great ideas.
Really well put together. Music and relaxed approach to education makes it more enjoyable. Thank you.
More vids please😉
Im really glad you enjoyed it! I have a number of videos planned for the coming weeks. Thanks for the support, Tom.
