How unbelievable and unfathomable must’ve been their mother’s grief. So very, very sad.
The father and son may have no known grave, but they are surely buried somewhere in the salient. If their bodies were retrieved shortly after death, they could well have been formally buried but their graves subsequently lost/destroyed by later shellfire. They are commemorated in Tynecot Cemetery, where there are also 8,373 unidentified graves.
Remembrance is in the heart and mind. Any of these graves of soldiers 'Known unto God' can offer a meaningful focus for family or relatives wishing to pay their respects.
At the going down of the Sun and in the morning we will remember them.
Certainly two exceptional men. Also commemorated on the St. Paul's Church, Alverthorpe War Memorial. R.I.P.
My great uncle was in the kings own Yorkshire light infantry he was killed on the 2nd of may 1917
Very sad Bless them 🙏😢
"In peace,
sons bury their father,
During war, fathers bury
their sons"
Why weren’t they buried in their own graves? They saw the bodies right after they died, so it wasn’t a case of not being able to ID them?
Horrible.
