Lot of interesting points, changed my view on some things. However if Dave was given a much smaller budget for safety, could he not have made the call to not program an open water swim event as director? Perhaps play the hand he was dealt better
I was thinking that too. If you can’t do it safely then don’t do it. This is the reason we have occupational health and safety to prevent people from doing unsafe work without proper PPE, etc. The same logic applies here. They could do it in a pool. Even if it meant doing qualifying heats that weren’t televised. Having a mass start of athletes jumping in the water all together and swimming over top of each other has never been the greatest call either.
I think people are just arguing about the wrong problems at this point. Everyone is arguing about whether or not it could of been avoided or was their regulations in place ect ect. But, the real issue isn't even that someone died. It's how the company, in particular Castro, handled it. If you run a company and someone dies at your event and one of your employees publicly lies about the family of the person who died saying they want it to continue and everything else that followed. I agree that the “torch” needs to be carried by someone. HQ has evolved to where it necessarily can’t, and the affiliates are at fault. So, instead of taking the torch, they just complain and resist HQ’s attempts to help them the only way it can, given its current form.
Dave did things wrong though. He lied to Lazars family and then lied to the community and athletes saying that Luka wanted the games to continue. On top of that, there are the things the athletes have complained about over the years. This kind of misconduct would lead to any director be fired. It’s also time to stop glorifying people like Dave and Greg. Just because they created something awesome does not mean they shouldn’t be held accountable. They created a toxic environment at HQ and they demonstrate an unwillingness to grow with the sport, the athletes, and the community. We can be thankful for what they have created and still be ready to move on from them.
I feel like this video just highlights possible negligence on behalf of CF, you showing a CF water event with so much safety staff, then showing another water event with next to no safety staff, shows that they once new how to run a safe event and then deliberately chose not to! At the end of the day, the events are just made up, and any event could have been in place of the water event, if you cant provide athletes with a safe event, dont run it. But if you choose to, then at least have some self accountability.

@joshoftheeagles this comment is spot on. If there were budget constraints that compromised safety - something that will come out when an FOIA is filed once the lawsuits drop and an actual investigation takes place - then Castro should have scaled back or cancelled the swim event. So tired of hearing ‘if he had the budget there woulda/coulda been a billion boats out there’ argument. No budget for proper safety measures = swim event cancelled or changed to account for safety measures that could be provided. From what I understand, Castro was tooling around on one of the few, if not only, jet skis available during the event. Think that might have been put to better use than cool guy optics Castro wanted?
Also having a run into a swim on a hot morning, hot water temp, poorly briefed on the swim route, swimming into a rising sun, new goggles, no real transition area where swim caps had to be placed so you dont have to run with then, the list of contributing factors in the drowning is endless. The investigation surely identifies many, many more of these, but yet we will never know
Hadnt thought about it but the point about the athletes not really working out in affiliates is a good one. I workout in my garage and the comoetition I did a year ago it was one family and my immediate family that came to watch me while I saw others with 20 or 30 people supporting them
For the Open and quarterfinals they brought in about 12 million….and had almost zero expenses to do it. There are 11k affiliates world wide @$4500 each….so another 50 million……how in the F can you not be making money. HQ does nothing for affiliates ( no marketing, no customer service, etc..) so someone is getting paid way too much to do nothing.
You gotta realize that "Funding for the price purse is gonna come from the open registrations " to "All of the open registration money is gonna go into the price purse" is kind of an insane interpretation. I'd be surprised if it's more than 20%.
My reading of the judging requirements is that you only need L1 + Advanced Judge Cert to in-person judge the In-Affiliate Semi-Finals, hopefully improving the standards for the video submissions. To take part in the crowd-sourced viewing and assessment of the videos after submission the statement only says 'anyone who has taken the Judges Course' - not Advanced or any other qualification - so should be ok to watch and 🦇with just the bog-standard Judges Course?
I do not like the changes to online competition but, it costs a lot of money to put on a semi final. Lots of good points made. About communities supporting at regionals. Very good point. The media team being fired, good point. Private equity wanting their %, good point. Hard to accept as someone who looked forward to quarterfinals and chasing semis, not sure where I stand but CrossFit is having growing pains. If you want it to be around, support it. Regardless if you agree with the current decisions by HQ. Rhetoric is great, but disagree and commit if you want CrossFit to succeed long term.
And about the money, if you dont have money to build a house, you dont build it. Why did they push for that event with not enough support? If i invest my money, i want transparency. 20 bucks, then 20 bucks. Otherwise dont beg to sign up. I like how you blame "us, the community members" for negligence by CFHQ.
Good video. I see a lot of hate on CrossFit right now, even from box goers especially from Reddit. I enjoy doing CrossFit and watching it. I hope they fix things. Especially the media. When you said that the prize purse would draw from the open did they ever say that ALL the proceeds from the open would be used for the prize purse or just that’s where the money would be sourced. I agree that more money would push the sport forward. At one point CrossFit was on that trajectory but something went wrong long before Dukic passing.
I did not know that a private equity firm had purchased CrossFit. I detest private equity. There's a great book by Gretchen Morgenson about how awful private equity is. I can give a few examples if anyone is interested.
Glassman is responsible for Reebok pulling their sponsorship and money. It’s not on the people who wanted Glassman out following those comments. The second Glassman said that problematic stuff, Reebok were out. And any company that decided they wanted to be associated with CrossFit from then onwards were saving CrossFit. From that point forward, if Crossfit did not have enough money to pay for water safety, then they should not have run an event they could not provide adequate safety for. They could have changed that event, but they didn’t…. and that’s where Castro and Don come in.
CrossFit has been largely downhill since 2019 when they fired their social media team. I don’t see them getting better. Its a shame as I have been at the same box in Fairfax Va since 2008 and we are slowly dying My gym in northern VA just recently got a new manager who replaced the man/wife who ran the gym for over a decade. He is as toxic as he is incompetent. That is further hurting our gym
Nothing to say about quarterfinals being removed? I think that is a lot of money that CrossFit is missing🤔 and also a lot of intermediate RX athletes had a nice goal to make it to the quarterfinals. It’s kinda sad that it’s being removed
In half defense of Hooper, there is a TON of political black listing in strongman. There’s also a lot of athletes that won’t go to specific competitions for political reasons, and I can see why he would assume that would/could happen in CrossFit. Especially if the qualification process turns to invites. Imagine if there was a high level CrossFit athlete that came out railing against Rogue for some reason, they probably wouldn’t be invited to the Invitational.
@@hillerfitThor will never compete in Worlds Strongest Man and any Giants Live events because of Colin. Thor has spoken out negatively about Colin/WSM/Giants Live.

I don’t believe they said 100% of the Open proceeds fund the Games prize purse. The prize purse may decrease. It could a set % of the Open proceeds make the prize purse.
I agree with a few things, i disagree on few others, but especially this, and i would love to understand your point: a while ago you were saying that judges (as athletes) at a certain level should be "professionals". That, for me, implies being paid for your job. Why whould i want to pay not only 30 dollars, but another thousand now, out of my pocket, to judge online competition for free? I understand it might be good for the athletes and for the sport, for sure is good for Crossfit's 20%, but i just don't see why i would want to do it. (i have L2 and also countless stupid judges courses, and i wouldn't do it). Also... ok online judging, but who will have the final word on penalties etc? (remember, she showed the capacity).
I have been following you for a while, this has to be the best video you have done yet. Appreciate you taking the time to make this and calling out the elephant in the room.
The public videos for judging is great. If Don Faul truly wants to expand CF - start by getting back to “Forging Elite Fitness.” Get out of the crowd. Go back to proclaiming your product as the end-all be-all
2021 - morning chalk up says Justin Medeiros and Tia. 2020 was Mat and Tia. Edit - Nope, sorry, didn’t search “virtual” games. Can’t find any information on the virtual games, just that it was happening and how it would work.
I think the CrossFit Games grew too big and too complex. It would have been a smarter decision to keep the same movements and the same rig setups for 5 to 10 years and become efficient, fast and consistent with their broadcasting. Most sports have the same formula every year. I feel like CrossFit is hit and miss every year. The consistency in quality is never there. I feel like 2015 was their peak and they never achieved it again. In many ways they kind of screwed themselves because they don't have a consistent sports game. Every year has to be different and it changes the game. The sport doesn't have the potential to get better at their broadcasts because it changes too much. They're basically trying to pull off a complex live reality TV game show.
CF should go full money grab and provide incentives for athletes to promote to get spectators there. use their code the athlete gets a small kickback... the person who losses probably is likely to have the biggest connections in the community and could earn more than they could standing on top of the podium
i went to the Semi finals in Knoxville fully as a fan of the sport, drove down from Canada, it seemed like it had enough people at it to make money, but i don't know for sure. the Event on the west coast seemed to have hardly any people at it and had to have been a big looser, both Australia and Europe had packed houses so must have done well. so i dont think that the Semis were totally non profitable, Maybe a solution that a lot of us north americans would not like is having 3 semi finals around the world, one in NA which would be really popular as the strength of field would be insane and one each in Australia and Europe. the Games field would be weaker but 3 huge events before the games with tons of good content would be so good to watch. asia sounth america and africa would each be sent to the semi final if any were good enough to qualify just my thoughts on what a profitable solutions could have been.

Exactly. Have it be a dry-tri. Cutting corners because you “don’t have the money,” is a bullshit excuse.
I workout in my garage and the comoetition I did a year ago it was one family and my immediate family that came to watch me while I saw others with 20 or 30 people supporting them
What do affiliates receive for the $4500/yr fee other than the right to use the term CrossFit?
A handful of useless stuff. The value (unfortunately at the moment) is in the name of
And that's why a lot of gyms in Europe quitted their contracts. In Germany really a lot...
The more the BS, the more affiliates will drop away.
Holy epic video ❤ . Couldn't agree more . We need to band together amd pish forward for a better crossfit. We cant give up !!!
My first CF Games was 2014, trying to succeed that weekend has been very hard for CFHQ
And about the money, if you dont have money to build a house, you dont build it.
Why did they push for that event with not enough support?
If i invest my money, i want transparency. 20 bucks, then 20 bucks. Otherwise dont beg to sign up.
I like how you blame "us, the community members" for negligence by CFHQ.
you brought up good points. Changed my mind on the situation with the open.
Great one Hiller.
Margaux Alvarez was ousted because she said she didn’t want to compete. Way back in the day
I did not know that a private equity firm had purchased CrossFit.
The pairs will have their own in person in October which is cool.
Nike, now is the time. It’ll take half a billion to save.
CrossFit has been largely downhill since 2019 when they fired their social media team. I don’t see them getting better. Its a shame as I have been at the same box in Fairfax Va since 2008 and we are slowly dying
My gym in northern VA just recently got a new manager who replaced the man/wife who ran the gym for over a decade.
0:26 - that red splatter in the top-left of their graphic just doesn't sit well, after what happened at the Games this year.
Are there strongman that speak out negatively about strongman competitions?
@@hillerfitThor will never compete in Worlds Strongest Man and any Giants Live events because of Colin.
Thor has spoken out negatively about Colin/WSM/Giants Live.
@@hillerfit at least a handful over the years. Thor is the biggest example, I know Brian Shaw isn’t happy with the way WSM is being run recently. He started his own competition though.
I would think Rogue Invitational, Wodapalooza, Dubai etc would satisfy Hoopers desire for diversification but I guess not.
@@hillerfitBrian Shaw came out publicly against things Arnold said and refused to compete at Arnold Strongman last couple years.
I don’t believe they said 100% of the Open proceeds fund the Games prize purse. The prize purse may decrease. It could a set % of the Open proceeds make the prize purse.
I came in 26th in the 2021 Virtual CFG - & I bought the tee that says “Virtually a Games Athlete” 😅
Good morning to you Mr Hiller!
Literally unsubscribed from @mitchelhooper after his first Lazar video. Purely using tragedy for eyeballs and getting it wildly wrong too.
Mitchel Hooper is a clown who shows is ignorance on topics he knows little about in nearly every video.
If Open enrollment increases~ so does the work for the affiliate owner…… soooooooooooo
You did, I’m 100% certain because I did it too
I have been following you for a while, this has to be the best video you have done yet.
Appreciate you taking the time to make this and calling out the elephant in the room.
While you got the dictionary out, please look up transparency and let's see if CFHQ has lived up to it.
Hiller defending CF HQ here, there is a lack of transparency.
Expect more to lose trust in HQ. More affiliates to drop away.
why hooper even making a video about CrossFit when his not even related to sport
Clicks. Which I understand. But it’s the easiest thing ever for him
The public videos for judging is great. If Don Faul truly wants to expand CF - start by getting back to “Forging Elite Fitness.” Get out of the crowd. Go back to proclaiming your product as the end-all be-all
Didn't we all win the virtual games?!?!?! Participation trophies for everyone.
I think another question that should be asked is, who even competed in the 2021 virtual games?
2021 - morning chalk up says Justin Medeiros and Tia. 2020 was Mat and Tia.
Edit - Nope, sorry, didn’t search “virtual” games. Can’t find any information on the virtual games, just that it was happening and how it would work.
Wheres the NOpen? I rather do that this year 🤷♀️
Justin and his mullet
I’m still not sure how CrossFit HQ helps affiliates or reaches out to help affiliates open/gain more members…
Hooper looks like a thumb
He’s weird bro
I think you should post a video everyday. I love the increased frequency
Our very own Andrew Hiller!! 🏅
Keep it up man!
Jeffrey Adler won the 2021 Virtual CrossFit Games
That’s how cancel culture works- feelings > everything
Everything!!! Thank you!!!! All of the above 👆🏼
Anastasios Symeonidis won the men’s and Chyna Cho won the females
But only if they pull judging ability for those that don’t hold the standards
What happened to Armenhammer?
Fikowski works out at CrossFit FYP occasionally
Glad I allowed room for that! Thank you
@@hillerfitthere is another non affiliate that David Spurr his coach is out of, but I can’t remember the name
7:54 James Fitzgerald, Rob Wolf and maybe 2-3 more.
That's before Hillers time so he's likely unaware
Why is Hyrox hunter so angry with you?
CF should go full money grab and provide incentives for athletes to promote to get spectators there. use their code the athlete gets a small kickback... the person who losses probably is likely to have the biggest connections in the community and could earn more than they could standing on top of the podium
i went to the Semi finals in Knoxville fully as a fan of the sport, drove down from Canada,
it seemed like it had enough people at it to make money, but i don't know for sure. the Event on the west coast seemed to have hardly any people at it and had to have been a big looser,
both Australia and Europe had packed houses so must have done well. so i dont think that the Semis were totally non profitable, Maybe a solution that a lot of us north americans would not like is having 3 semi finals around the world, one in NA which would be really popular as the strength of field would be insane and one each in Australia and Europe.
the Games field would be weaker but 3 huge events before the games with tons of good content would be so good to watch.
asia sounth america and africa would each be sent to the semi final if any were good enough to qualify
just my thoughts on what a profitable solutions could have been.
Keep up the good work
