I have same plugger. I built admittedly "too heavy" weights for it using concrete and 2x6s. Wish I would've used 2x4s instead because my weights are probably 80# each..BUT...my aerator works better than a rental. Really tears it up.
I did my aeration and seeding on 9/2/24. I literally lost my entire lawn this year to fungus, heat stress, and a stupid mistake that I made in the middle of July. I used the new blend of GCI Turf Type Tall Fescue that has the spreading cultivars. I used tenacity and RGS along with some propoconizol. I did not apply a starter fertilizer at the time of seeding. I will wait until about a week after everything has germinated. This is the first year trying this method, so I am not sure if this will be my strategy every year. It's been 8 days since seeding, and I've got baby grass everywhere. I have about 14,000 sqft of turf and I have used 100 lbs. of seed. We are supposed to get rain this this weekend, so I plan to lay down some fertilizer to help it kick into gear and get to growing! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience! BTW I have the agrifab aerator too! Mine is orange which almost matches my Scag Patriot! Lol😊
@TheDIYLawnCoach I've only been doing this hobby for 3 years, but yes, definitely one that I would love to forget!! Your lawn is rocking and I'm sure it's going to be shining like a new penny in a few weeks!
Don’t let it get you down. People I talk to say this is one of the worst seasons in 10 years. I let you in on secret, every year bring a new challenge. Ive been doing lawn care for 10+ years and every year I think i have figured it out then, BAM its something new. The joy is in the process. A day spent in the lawn is a great day!!
When I get stressed out, I like to eat. Hell, when I’m not stressed I like to eat too! 😂 Great video. At what point do you apply another round of grass seed to fill in bare spots/areas that aren’t germinating? I’m 10 days in and have a few areas where I’m not getting any germination (while other areas germinated in 4 days). I think my above ground sprinklers aren’t hitting the areas well and that’s why it’s not germinating, so I’ll have to adjust, but wondering if I should put extra seed down too.
Thats tough, here in NC we still have plenty of season left to get gras to germinate. Try hand watering the areas for a week to see if you can get the seed to come up. Chances are, there is seed laying there. If you do throw down more seed just go lighter than you normally would. Great question, just really hard to answer because there are so many variables.
I’m in Indiana and it’s my first time I’m about to overseed my established lawn, am I waiting too long I was going to start at the end of the month? Two weeks from now I’m going to cut low, detach, scarify, core aerate, Over-seed, then cover with Pete Moss, and water am I waiting too long?
I'm ready to plug aerate and overseed, but it hasn't rained here in forever and my soil is really dry. I'm in NE Ohio, do you think it's ok to keep waiting for a good rainfall then aerate and seed? I also don't have irrigation and my yard is way too big to use sprinklers to soak it
Man thats tough. I think id wait. Looks like a storm is heading that way, hopefully you get some rain from that. I think if you pulled the trigger and aerated you wouldn’t get good results. Yall have pretty harsh winters so it’s important to get seed down and coming up as quickly as possible. Tough situation I know.
I’m you in my neighborhood😂. Except I don’t have irrigation (yet) and I have 30ksqft of TTTF with a good portion on a hill. Previous owner had a rainbird irrigation system with 56 heads in the front alone (according to the paperwork I have)! The brown flexible pipes are broken everywhere, but I’m hoping to salvage the 2 valve boxes next to the house. What irrigation system do you have installed and would you recommend? Trying to plan to resuscitate the irrigation system in the early spring, figuring the ground will be at its softest, the grass will be best to recover, and I will be able to mostly combat another summer long drought with an operational irrigation system. I’ve been doing all the things you do for years and I really enjoy watching your videos because we know these methods work and it supports all the hard work that goes into keeping a great lawn! Rest well after that aeration, seeding, and fertilizing in one day - I know brother, it’s a lot!!
Hey Neighbor!! First, I have a Hunter Irrigation system, I actually have a video where I talk all about it if you want to go check it out. I would recommend fixing in the fall that way you can repair the damage. Spring time leads right into summer and its hard to get new grass to survive.

It works great, thank you for watching!
So do you wait to mow then until the grass seed gets high enough? Or how do you go about mowing frequency during start of overseeding?
Thanks
I’ll answer that question in Mondays video. You will have to tune in to find out. Great question!!
Spreader Elite fills in REALLY well.
Yes it does

Awesome and good luck. Sounds like everything is going well. This year was tough for sure.

Also loved your video was really helpful information!! 👍
It weather dependent. Look up when your first frost is for your area. You want seed in the ground 6 weeks before your first frost.
Thats awesome to hear! It was a LOT of work filming and doing the work. If it helps people, that makes it all worth it!! Be blessed

I aerated 4 days ago and it hasn’t rained. Do you think it will damage the mower blades if I mow and there are still a few plugs left?
I wouldn’t mow unless you have to. Id try to wait 2-3 weeks. Will it damage the blades, no but it might cause them to dull faster.
@@TheDIYLawnCoachI forgot to mention that I did not overseed.
Yeah then go for it. The plugs will get cut up by the blades, yes it may dull them slightly but not a big deal.
