  • When efficiency increases, consumption drops, right? Errr... No.. So far, increased efficiency has mostly lead to increased consumption.
    This is called Jevons Paradox, discovered by William Stanley Jevons in 1865. He was concerned that improved steam engines would make England run out of coal faster!

    Very simple, if electricity becomes 3 times cheaper, would you really use the same ammount of electricity and save the rest, or would you just use 3 times more electricity?
    The result is the same, if you decide to choose to save the money and spend it on other things, it will be manufactured using electricity, so indirectly you use the same ammount of energy.

    It also explains why as computers get more RAM and faster processors programs still take as long or longer to run because programmers aren't trying to optimize for those metrics any more.

    Haha for me this is definitely true for movies, tv shows, and music. I use to torrent everything but Netflix/Spotify/etc has made it so convenient that I haven’t pirated anything for years .

    Here is something that i believe most people agree with.
    That paradox appear on subjects where we think that when two thing are related, that relation will have a simple linear behavior (positive or negative). That is, if something goes up then the other will either always go up or will always go down.
    It can only be called a paradox because of our ignorance on the subject and our laziness in day to day thinking.

    On your mature economies rebound effort example of automobile use should we not also consider how users who may have otherwise been considering taking other other options like public apt, walking or cycling might then simply decide to continue driving. Or does the rebound effect exclude external pulls and pushes?

    It's important to note, that even consumption goes up (as a result of lower prices) that goes hand in hand with with the total "value" for the consumers of that society.
    The work in developing the efficiency itself, is made with the intent to benefit the rest of society. But if you make a tax, the result of all that work, ends up being "funneled" to a bunch of bureaucratic parasites.

    • @gkes4617

      those bureacratic parasites will spend more monry in the economy, increasing consumption, which can help the economy grow and create more jobs

      @@DiogoVKersting no, in the scenario provided even though these bureacrats don't provide any benefit to the conomy, the increase in efficiency still allows the economy to grow despite that. It would be better to have them also provide a useful service, but having more people to spend on the economy is good for the economy as there are more people to sell products to, providing that these bureaucrts don't hoard their wealth, which would not provide any tangible benefit to anyone.

    Not really a paradox at all when you think about it. The easier something gets to do the more people do it.

  • @thedolphin5428

    It's not a paradox. It's just a truism. It's not a mystery or some unsolvable puzzle that self interest and greed (ie consumption) will grow and overrule the status quo. Even if there are no gains in efficiency, greedy people still consume more. It's just CALLED a paradox because people WISH it wasn't so. It's perfectly logical to me.

  • @LucreDenouncer

    The best way to reduce consumption is to reduce the number of consumers. Wear a condom, people!

      You tell that to the likes of Gates playing their little games in Africa artificially ballooning an entirely dependent population to the 2+billion range. It would take a much larger population than we have now to foster a society that could become truly spacefaring.

    • @LucreDenouncer
      @LucreDenouncer 2 роки тому

      @@daa3417 Spacefaring won't increase Earth's carrying capacity. To believe otherwise is a delusional fantasy. The overdeveloped world consumes FAR more per capita than the underdeveloped world. Yes, a reduction in underconsumers is needed too, but reducing the number of overconsumers conserves FAR more resources.

    There is no such thing called Efficiency in Energy and Physics - you want Efficiency, you burn orders of magnitude more energy than the sum total of useful work produced by that what is called 'Efficiency'.
    "Efficiency' is a fossil fuels-run concept where fossil fuels are traded cheaper than water - as if looted, not on the basis they are finite, since early coal in Britain and still.
    Jevons, one of the most important geniuses of our time, has been hypnotised by the energy-dense fossil fuels in the hand Economics;
    "No Energy store holds enough Energy to extract, collect and utilise an amount of Energy equal to the total Energy it stores.
    No Energy system can produce sum useful Energy in excess of the total Energy put into constructing it.
    This universal truth applies to all Energy systems.
    Energy, like time, flows from past to future".
    Wailing.
