Ford vs Ferrari, the story of the Ford GT40 on "Behind the Headlights"

    The story of the Ford GT40 and how it beat Ferrari at Le Mans in 1966, 1967, 1968 and 1969 from the Speed Channel show "Behind the Headlights".
    Just to let everyone know, this video was recorded off cable TV back in 2004, it's not in HD, the sound isn't the greatest and it contains commercials from that era (you can FF through them if you wish). If you can't handle that, please don't watch it.
    Even though this channel is not monetized on my behalf (I receive NO money from UA-cam and don't care) UA-cam has now added commercials to pay 3rd party claims for the music used in some of the commercials that I left in this video, I tried to remove them but UA-cam won't allow me. The only way around the UA-cam added commercials is to pay for a subscription, sorry.

    Wow, Net Zero. I remember getting that for 3 months before dumping it for AT&T DSL. Super fast since the A&T Central Office was 300 feet away. Thanks for posting this piece of history. Usually I hate the commercials but I'm a little bit older now with grandchildren that enjoy hearing the rest-of-the-story..
    Edit: Just thought I'd put this out there. Back in 1958 a guy named Jim Robbins begged my father to partner up with him because he wanted to build Race Teams. My dad wasn't hurting financially and although Robbins offered him crazy money, dad was way more into making cash money, so he never took Jim Robbins up on his offer. He mentioned it to me one time back in the early 1980's and told me that the way the paperwork was to be drawn up, after Robbins died in the company plane crash during the mid 1960's, my dad would have become the head of Robbins Racing Division and God knows what else...

      F. W. - not just that everyone forgets about The Godfather of the GT40 Roy Lynn. In Dearborn Roy Lunn and his team had a new version of the GT40 ready for testing. Ford Motor Company had been working to develop and perfect a 7-liter 427 cubic inch engine. Lunn and his team had worked an engineering marvel to fit the larger engine in the mid-engine car while retaining aerodynamic integrity. That’s the car that Ken Miles raced after he tested at the Romeo test track

      Ok then what about Eric Broadly the British owner of Lola? The Lola mk6 ran Le Mans in 1963 and retired due to engine trouble, it had a V8 engine was 40 inches high, hell it even had the door tops that go into the roof, Ford bought the rights to the mk6 and employed Eric to oversee the project, the GT40 “IS” a tweaked Lola MK6 😊

    21:59 "we had mechanics from New Zealand".... [first country that Shelby mentions]. Bruce McLaren (great engineer) and race car driver and Chris Amon (who Enzo Ferrari himself called the best test driver he ever worked with) piloted that black Ford across the line in first place. While neither Bruce or Chris (or Denny Hulme who was sitting in the car when Miles wasn't, and only Kiwi F1 champion) were talked about at all in the film, THIS WAS A KIWI TRIUMPH. Screw anything else 3 of the top 4 steps were occupied by New Zealanders. And all these guys contributed to the development of that car.

      But still holding up that well is impressive, especially for the times and it showed that a big inefficient engine is more durable than a high strung, but more efficient engine.
      That means however that fuel restrictions allowed Porsche and Ferrari to still run Le Mans, while fords engine was out, because it purely relied on its loose construction and huge displacement, which made it chug way more fuel.

Recognizing this video is about Ford vs Ferrari BUT the men beng interviewed back when this was made failed to mention a great many cars that for certain appealed to we youngsters of that era - me as well being among them 'cause I was born in '47. I remember very well the '62 406ci, 4spd, the '63 390 and 427 4spd Galaxies, the '64/65 427 Thunderbolts, the '65 Hi-Pro 289 Mustangs and Falcons, the list goes on for high performance Fords so to say Ford wasn't in the performance market just isn't true. Henry the 2nd was just pissed off at Enzo Ferrari for telling him to go pound sand and he threw the sink at beating him just to get even,, he did it with the help of a few outstanding men of the time.

      Enzo 1965
      Mine was actually manufactured within the first month of production. As a Ferrari fan, I’m sure you’re aware that mid-engine sportscars with no nannies and a lot of available torque shouldn’t be driven by your average driver. I am not your average driver, I’ve only ever owned turbo MR2s and Celicas. I don’t have issues with these cars because I learned to drive on them. When you have that experience, the tendency towards oversteer is a feature, not an issue. Porsche 911 owners tend to agree.

    • @negativeindustrial
      @negativeindustrial 5 років тому +1

      Enzo 1965
      And you are correct. Back when I had a car club in my twenties, a lot of the younger rich kids that joined actually talked their parents into buying them used MR2Ts and the parts they needed to get them into the 300whp range. Most of those cars left the tarmac at least once. Most didn’t result in anything more than curbed rims and brown underwear but the tendency towards oversteer on the 1990-1992 cars was a real thing.
      All it really comes down to is unfamiliarity with midengine driving dynamics. If you enter a corner hard and then balk in the apex the car has a tendency to shift all its weight to the front leaving the drive wheels with greatly reduced traction and a tendency to toe out on the outside wheel. This initiated the oversteer that must be steered into to recover but inexperienced drivers will typically hit the brakes and countersteer which just makes the problem worse.
      It’s an easy thing to correct by fitting a wider set of rims on the rear with 275width tires, a 93+ rear subframe and arms or simply don’t lift off in the apex. I’ve never done the subframe because it neutered the handling. The 275 tires makes it require a far more deliberative set of actions.
      As I said, this isn’t an MR2 thing, all contemporary midengine cars, including Ferrari, will do the same thing.

    Great show. Lots of GT40 history with the Mark VI's 1967 campaign featured heavily. A tip on the ads: skip 2 minutes each time.
    Near end: GT40 "outlawed" after 1969? my understanding is that the new homologation rules allowed 5 litre engines if 25 examples were made. GT40s in their original form were past their prime so if they were grandfathered in it would be in an uncompetitive state. Neither 25 in a new 5L form or free prototype 3L would be contenders for victory.
    Happy to see someone correct this or flesh it out better.

    Ford vs Ferrari & Rush are two great flicks about racing. A movie covering true racing events are not easy movies to produce. But Ron Howard & James Mangold do great jobs on each. And for what it’s worth, Ford vs Ferrari is very much centered around British driver Ken Miles...and that exactly who it should’ve been about. He poured his heart and soul into the Ford GT40 program and was robbed for being a “team player” after slowing his pace at Le Mans so that Ford could cross the finish line 1..2..3 and a “technicality” forever removed his name from being the Triple Crown winner.

      GM had the sales leadership, so their brass probably didn't see any reason to spend lots of money on racing. So both Ford and Chrysler used racing to get more interest in their performance cars. Ford had been the leader in engine tech every since the flathead v8, and Chrysler's hemi caught them up and they stayed competitive for years. GM? Their big block could be bored and stroked out over 500 cubic inches and remain reliable, so it was theengine used in many cars in the Can Am races until Porsche came up with the twin turbo 917

As someone who clearly (If you look at my username it's pretty damn obvious) loves the automobile, Carol Shelby embodies the American Dream in so so many ways. I've been fortunate enough to have a ride in a Shelby GT 500 Mustang with Carol's signature on the dash. Just seeing that name sitting in that car, knowing to put it there he was sitting in the same seat I did put chills up my spine.
    The day Shelby passed I got very emotional. I hope the movie and videos like this serve to make him a hero to a new generation of young people and it kindles a passion for cars for them the way he kindled that passion in my life just by learning of his life story over the years through programs like this.

McLaren caught him in the rain and over took AGAIN. " Miles let McLaren lead the final lap and CLEARLY cross the finish line ahead of him. Because he knew he was running second place. But FORD had promised him he would be awarded the dead heat anyway and get the Triple Crown. FORD fucked up and robbed him of his chance to race McLaren head to head. Amon is also quoted as saying "even without FORD interference we would have easily beat car #1.." Read the article "Lunch with Chris Amon" Motorsport Magazine June 2008. And watch the race online. Miles is clearly letting McLaren drive in first place for the last lap.

    When Ken Miles was deprived of his win it was because his car placed up front in qualifying whereas the Amon car was further back. So, it was judged that it had travelled further in the 24 hours.
    There are two things wrong with this rule:
    >1.0-why bother qualifying near or at the front when clearly qualifying near or at the rear would be an advantage;
    >2.0-the distance travelled in the 24 hours should be measured from the start finish line. Otherwise, the finish line for each car ought to have been the point at which each car actually started running. In this way qualifying up toward the front maintains the advantage of qualifying and still every car measure its distance from start to finish on the same basis.
    This was a phenomenal achievement for the Ford Motor Company, all the team members and Henry Ford II himself, especially the all American team. Terrific story.

    Cooling ducts leading into radiators are always a huge challenge. Whatever airflow gets into and through the intakes and coolers expands a bunch when its heated taking heat out of the cooler. So you need way more room for the air to expand and escape than you'd think.

      Ugh. My MR2T agrees with you sir. I’m thinking it’d be best just to remove the engine lid altogether.

      I will never sell that car. I tracked down a legitimate GReddy Intercooler and intercooler piping kit with shroud and upgrades spal fan. Currently running 21PSI on an ATS Blackjack Turbocharger. Upgraded the radiator along the way and no more cooling issues!
      Thanks for the compliment!

    Great video, different perspective on an age old story. Fantastic historic footage. Commercials generally suck, but, hey... Hooter's Christmas gift cards, Crown Royal, and Pontiac! Sign me up!
