Hi Dr. Naveen, it is a very nice video you made and it givea so much englightment to many people out there.
I'm from Jakarta, Indonesia. I went to have a PCR test on January 16, it resulted negative. Then I went to have a rapid Swab Antigen test in a small clinic on January 17and I was tested postive. I would like to thank you for bringing this topic up. I experienced mild symptoms (Cold, sore throat, No fever) two days back, I went for an RAT and RT-PCR test, RAT came Positive whereas after 1 day RT-PCR was Negative. I was confused and wondering what does this mean. I have been immensely searching and trying hard to get an answer for this. Doctors seem puzzled about this and advised me to remain in Isolation for 7 days as I am Covid positive only according to them. I am confused and in search of an answer to this ended up here.

@@alarnajenkins @Suhai Ansari - yes, falser positives from rapid antigen tests are possible. If you did an RT-PCR test and it was negative, that is the one more reliable. Hi - test result is valid within the timeframe they show on the instructions. If you are getting a faint line after 30 minutes or longer, you cannot rely on that result. If you don't have symptoms but you think you may have been exposed, I would recommend a PCR test to confirm. These types of rapid antigen tests work better if you have symptoms.

Hi - if you think you have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID, it would be a good idea to confirm with a PCR test. Generally, the rapid test should be reliable within 5-7 days from when you symptoms start. In your case you don't have symptoms, so the positive result may be not too reliable. You may also repeat the rapid test, but doing a PCR confirmation would be more reliable. Best wishes.

In September I was at an event with 200 people in the same large dining room. Three days later I had a sore throat and took a lateral flow test (made by Xiamen Biotime Biotechnology Company) which was positive. The PCR test was also positive. I developed a fever, cough and loss of sense of smell in the next few days but did not get seriously ill although I am aged 65; I think the vaccine can probably take some credit for this. Fingers crossed its false positive. I do have a theory however, i do have a chronic noise blockade, and always have some mucus in my noise, so I believe that the antigen test gets triggered by common cold mucus. its a running theory but it makes total sense that the antibodies for covid will be able to react to other corona viruses like comon cold

Hello - unless it is a false positive, the result means that a the individual has the Coronavirus and is infectious. It would be better to take all precautions and follow your local guidelines. If there is reason to suspect the test result is false positive, then a confirmation test should be done using RT-PCR.

Hi - yes this can be confusing. Do you have any symptoms? If not, then the LFT may not be very sensitive. Also depends on the specific test and how good it is. Can you share the name of the test? If it is an FDA authorized test, then the clinical performance of this test should be available.

Hello Jasmine - yes, unfortunately, these rapid tests are giving many false-positive results. RT-PCR tests are more accurate but they take longer and they too have limitations for people who do not have any symptoms. Still, you can talk to your doctor to see if you should do a second RT-PCR test to confirm. It is best to keep taking precautions like social distancing and using masks. Keep a close eye on symptoms and seek immediate medical attention if you begin to feel worse. Good luck and stay healthy!

Hi Nimo - PCR or rapid antigen tests should be used only in the first few days of symptoms. If the May 6 PCR positive was true positive, it is likely your son had an infection but did not have the symptoms. If it has already been over 2 weeks, you may want to do an antibody test to confirm the prior infection. I don't think doing another PCR test will give you an accurate result. In the meantime, please keep an eye on the symptoms and contact your doctor immediately. Best wishes.

I am so confused right now... me and my boyfriend had spent the night together on dec 27th. I was feeling like my allergies were ramping up like I had caught something more than just my normal allergies. I usually know I’m getting sick when I get a sore throat. As the night went on I became progressively worse. By the morning my chest was so congested it hurt all the way through to my back. I was exhausted. Sore throat. Nauseous and dizzy upon waking up...
He was starting to feel sick as well, so we went to get tested. And after 2 hours in line, and me falling asleep twice while waiting because I was so exhausted, we got tested with PCR..
I had a rapid test at home so we went home and used them. Both said positive.... we both started on medicine right away, because we already had what medicines we needed at home... by the 29th the next day I was feeling a little better. But still congested. But he was feeling really bad congested now. Like he was a day behind me symptom wise...
When the PCR results came back it showed he was positive and I was negative.
It blew my mind because I was sicker than him at the time... and had spent the night prior to being tested and a few nights a week before...
So I scheduled another PCR test about 30 miles away. Still feeling bad I drove in the rain to get the test anyways... everyone thought it was gonna come back positive. But when it came back a day and a half later, it said negative.
Now everyone is denying I even had Covid. After being around my boyfriend who tested “positive” and another guy at our Christmas party who ended up testing positive right around the same time we did...
I am thinking the tests were wrong or something considering we all had the same symptoms... and that with how contagious omicron is and me being around the people that tested positive, you’d definitely think my test would’ve said positive...

@@explorer8125 Hi - thank you for sharing your experience. First, I hope you are feeling better now and on your way to recovery.
Yes, this is very confusing. 2 PCR tests done at different locations giving you a negative result shows a very high chance you don't have covid. If you didn't have enough sample (swabbing only one nostril, not pushing far enough) there is a good chance of getting a false negative in the PCR. But the second PCR where you collected your own sample sounds ok to me.
Certainly, Omicron is a concern and with your exposure to others who tested positive, you should treat this situation as a covid positive for you. There is one at-home PCR like test I can recommend for you (I don't have any relationship with the company). I have reviewed this test in the past.

hi Dr. Naveen, im from singapore and I was a close contact with a AG+ recently. I have mild symptoms and tested myself with Quidel QuickVue ART on the second day and it turns out positive. Since I had symptoms, I decided to visit the doctor for meds and another affirmation. However I was tested Negative at the clinic which the doctor uses a Roche ART testkit (In Singapore PCR test is no longer necessary unless Im severely ill). To err on the side of caution, I continued isolating myself like a positive. I tested myself on the 4th day of contact with a QuickVue and a SD Bio test kit. QuickVue turns out positive again and SD Bio negative.
I continued this on myself on the 7th day, the same results of QuickVue positive and SD negative occurred again. It's my 12th day now, some mild symptoms are returning, but I don't have any QuickVue left, thus am testing on SD Bio which is still negative.
Will there be possibilities of false positives only for one brand? Or is QuickVue more sensitive in picking up lower viral loads? I'm still confused on this.

Hi - yes it is possible to get a false positive for one test and not the other. But in this case, it seems you have positive confirmation consistently with QuickVue. I am thinking maybe the SD is giving you false negative. I am not familiar with Roche ART testkit, so I am not sure if it is more sensitive than a rapid antigen test. Did you get the covid vaccine? It is possible you have mild symptoms because of the vaccine.
There is no reason for you to continue testing using rapid antigen test. If you really want to be sure you had covid, then you should do an antibody test 2-3 2weeks after full recovery. In this case, you should see a positive antibody result, which could also be due to the vaccine if you have taken it.

Hello Dr. I would like to know that if my rapid pcr is accurate . i have done it on 19th march i had already started to lose my sense of smell 1 day ago and my sense of taste the day of the rapid test and i came out positive . 11 days later i have done a pcr test and came out negative . is that mean that i have been infected?

Hi Roy - there is a lot of confusion about test accuracy. In general, RT-PCR tests are more accurate than rapid tests but they are not without problems, especially if you don't have any symptoms. You mention you started to lose your sense of smell and taste. And one test is positive, while the other is negative. This must be very frustrating for you.
I think the best advice I can give you is to talk to your doctor. Maybe they will advise you to do another test or take other steps. Keep an eye on your symptoms and take action sooner than later. I wish you the best.

Hi Vijay - do you know if they did a PCR test or rapid antigen test? PCR tests are generally more accurate and a negative on that test would have more confidence. Plus you don't have any symptoms.
In any case, you should follow the rules and advice in your area. It looks like there are different guidelines in different places.

Hi Pramod - it seems like you had some other kind of infection, not COVID-19. RT-PCR is generally more accurate and reliable. If you got a positive from rapid antigen and a negative from RT-PCR, it was most likely a false positive from the rapid test. Which rapid antigen test did you do? Do you have the name of that test available?

Both lines on this test (one for Control C and Test T) mean the result is positive. Problem is that many of the COVID symptoms are similar to other infections, at least in the early stage. If you lose your sense of smell or taste, or have difficulty breathing, then it is COVID. So it is not uncommon for people to experience symptoms, then the rapid test to give a false positive result.
