I remember way back in the 80’s Terri Garr on Letterman talking about this movie. She joked that the only reason they made the movie was so if they made another one, they could advertise it as, “From the people who gave you Head…” 😂 And speaking of Terri Garr. What a beauty. Always had a thing for her. RIP Funny lady.
The significance of the fame-bubble entrapment machine, the mechanised regulation of day-to-day life, military might without moral authority, the loss of identity in society, the personal subsuming of self in the commercial landscape, the unthinking totalitarianism of the establishment, police control of freedoms and the meaning of existence itself ; quite a lot (and more) to fit into a 1 hr 24 mins film ! And music too!, I just love the psychedelic presentation of these concepts, truly a misunderstood masterpiece. Thanks for posting ! :)
one of the worst movies of all time..i rank it a step below magical mystery tour,,,and i never thought any movie could do that,,,even sonny liston acted better than pete or nez,,davey and mickey were pro actors so at least they could act
Actually, i quite like this. I last saw it on British TV over 25 years ago. It moves along from scene to scene and doesn't slow down. And there's all sorts of things to look at in it.
I loved this when it was first shown on British TV, and now I can see a lot more in it. By the way, you know it was written by an unknown actor called Jack Nicholson…
Seems like this one of those films that you either love it or hate it. I'm in the first category. I saw it in the theater back in '68 and although it was nothing at all like the Saturday morning show, I still enjoyed it's quirky, offbeat humor with the psychedelic tunes (I was all of 11 at the time) and think it holds up well today.
I grew up with 1970s Monkees reruns and saw Head on Cinemax in 1990 and taped it. I was very disappointed the first time. I saw it again maybe 5 more times in as many years, and it grew on me. I went a decade without seeing it, then loved it!
THEY USED THE SAME "CIRCULAR SCRIPT" IDEA THAT FELLINI INVENTED AND PAUL MCCARTNEY USED IN MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR (THE MOVIE). VERY ENJOYABLE. THANK YOU.
I think they would argue about the songs being the same as the tv series, but this is basically one long Monkees episode with vietnam and drugs references
According to the Monkees, it was a film to end the TV show, since the producers and screenwriters were tired of them and wanted to move on (as they did) and pursue new projects. It's the commercial logic of the media, it happened to them and others too.P.S: Micky Dolenz had a good voice, he could have tried a solo career.
This was a gift! Mickey was hilarious in this! Somehow I knew it would come back to the bridge. Tell me, where was Terri Garr? Just so I don’t “have to do this all over again”. 😊
@@JasonBeam7 Nicholson was also involved with "The Trip". The writer Terry Southern was a nexus of that scene and also wrote "The Magic Christian" for Ringo Star, one of the first Beatles' Apple Movies.
Haven't seen this in years. Friend had it on laser disc (which will tell you how long ago it was). Ultimately weird. Some of the best music they ever made snuck in here and there.
Weird movie I was only a boy when this came out ! Favourite scenes?? Davy jones now deceased danced with a 25 yr old Toni Basil to Daddys song ! Circle sky ? Another Nesmith classic ! And the cafe scene with the late Peter Tork & Victor Mature as the waitress!!!lol 😂😂😂😂
Great movie, thanks forbposting! The remastering done really was excellent, but im surprised the issue at 52:03 wasn't found (the dvd doesn't have the anomaly)
Head substantiated the notion that the Monkey's were locked into their persona as a television creation and that any attempts on their part to become or be an actual band was doomed to failure. The younger television viewers that had grown to love their onscreen clowning were not interested in seeing that taken to any other level. And the more mature acid crowd had already left the Monkeys behind. According to Wikipedia production and direction of the film was pretty much an acid drenched project. While that might be cool for the audience, it's not the best source of action for all the highly technical aspects of movie creation.
Three guys met on a bus in Liverpool & organically forged their own artistic destiny! Four creative guys met at an audition reception and were forged by an industry machine!
Bob Raefelson looks exactly like Cosmo Kramer in this picture and don’t forget that Hendrix used to open up for them in these days too! Zappa’s not in here for a minute and I wish there was more music than their own schtick honestly; cuz they were capable of doing so! A total missed opportunity for them to actually just play their songs together for the very last time as their television series was shortly cancelled by the network within a couple of months.
Worst drugs-ploitation movie ever made. Even the cameos by Annette Funicello, Dennis Hopper, Jack Nicholson, Frank Zappa, Teri Garr and Victor Mature fail to redeem it. BAD TRIP! 2 thumbs down.
The world was not ready for this in 1968. Still might not be, but I love it and watch it over and over.
Likewise.❤
Head was great

A crazy mixed up surreal journey which is hard to digest but the incredible psychedelic beautiful masterpiece at 3:00 must not be missed!

Well explained ❤
Otto Preminger knew his stuff.
Phew !
it actually turned out to be a really good film.
I agree. Great film, but to understand it, you need to know the backstory of the Monkees.
A true masterpiece.

Think The Party with Peter Sellers, Wild In The Streets, Bullit, Rosemary's Baby, and 2001 A Space Oddyssey came out the same year.

It's amazing how things changed in just the few years from '66 to '70. This is really a frozen moment of '68; couldn't have been made in '71.
Masterpiece
Thank you!!!
Sad only one Monkee left ! Still a cool movie in 2024 🙈🙉🙊🐵
Damn, I caught Flashbacks❣❣😎🤙🏽
Is that not the intention ❓
Gosh had a crush 😍 on all four them .😅
I bet you wish you were in that kissing scene, eh? actually, maybe you were, you kind of look like that girl...
My fav Peter❤
"And the same goes for Christmas!"
Eclectic and surreal.

Magical Mystery Tour! Inarguably the Beatles biggest, worst FLOP!

Wonderful film, must have been something in the water

Mickey did a TV series, Circus Boy, pre Monkees
He had and has one.
I saw it on TV mid 70s tripping
Tripping, right. You had to be doped on something strong to like this movie.
This was a gift! Mickey was hilarious in this! Somehow I knew it would come back to the bridge. Tell me, where was Terri Garr? Just so I don’t “have to do this all over again”. 😊
Has anyone else noticed Jack Nickolson's brief appearance?
Yep. He was one of the writers of the movie too
And Dennis Hopper.
Jack was the producer and co-writer of the film and his buddy Bob Rafelson directed it. 2 years later they made the classic Five Easy Pieces.

I liked it somewhere between self deprecation and making fun of the show. Nice way to go out.
Love UA-cam because of things like this.😊 So who got head?
A classic

Reflects cultural collapse & subsequent indulgence decades later. Premonition?
I got so Excited seeing Tor Johnson again 1:14:00

We Monkees fans are as cognitive and aware of all aspects of the Monkees project as anyone else. You oversimplify.
The Monkey's?
🎬 has cameos of many supporting actors whose faces are memorable but names?
Movie very difficult to watch in its release. Now, decades later, it's a testimonial to an era's mood.
The way they landed Mike and Mickey were dead for sure, other 2 landed in good position
Strangest movie, but then again it was jack Nicholson's idea.
I liked the guru best
Watch with the volume off along to records.
The porpoise is waving goodbye 👋
Wow, that was.... I'm not sure what that was..

due to this film and their attitude towards the TV show
"Monkees music is banal and Insipid." FZ

This would be great a LSD,..
Yes it was for me nearly 50 years ago
Sickening.
Sheik Yerbooty?
I can see why you had to be taking drugs to get something out of this film
Thinking it reflects cultural collapse & consequent indulgence of decades later?
Saw part of this mess decades ago. Long story short, the Monkees morph from teen idols to acidheads. It's a challenge to sit through this mess.
Great movie but I think you need to be on drugs to get some of the humor in it .
LSD. ha ha
