Yeah he has a great swing. Little concerned about the power squat down into the ground but he recovers so well coming into impact. On the telecast at Vidante NBC showed a comparison side by side with Fred Couples and its almost identical angles and rhythm. One of the most technically sound and impressive swings currently on the PGA Tour with effortless power. Has a tendency to mis time the downswing slightly and come over the top for a shut pull draw but hung on to win under the severest pressure. Big advantage is he knows how to hit his driver both ways at will a key factor that is playing Augusta and other demanding course majors.
All great call outs! That sink at the top is a big power/speed source. And I agree, with that strong grip he has, if he rushes it at the top it’ll be a closed face pull miss
It was a double edged sword; he did not look like a PGA-Tour quality striker coming down the stretch....but honestly no one seemed to be. Maybe the conditions were that tough in Mexico...I don't know. However, his short game was stellar, and his putting was solid. I'd say that was quite impressive because when your swing isn't the greatest, so much pressure is put on the short game at that level that it will certainly expose the player. He held. I hope he is the real deal..I love his story. I remember following James Hahn with my son before he won his first tournament out in the LA Open...he was selling shoes a few months before that. These guys go through absolute hell, almost all of them...when they accomplish a win, it is truly an emotional event I'm sure.
Really appreciate the analysis! The first time I saw Jake swing, I did a double take, omg! A questions about something that stood out to me with the slow motion. It appears at the top of his backswing, as. He is dropping into the slot, his left arm is bending. Is that right or am I just seeing things?
Great breakdown and a great swing to learn a lot from! saw a few comments below on the miss being pull hooks, which is my driver miss right now. My trackman average is +7 path and +1.3 face. Any advice on how to remedy? is it a rhythm issue as referenced below or is my path too in-to-out? thanks much
In Jake's case, his pull hook miss is subject to his strong grip, so if he rushes his transition even the slightest and doesn't drop his hands in the slot, he runs the risk of missing with a pull hook. Sounds like you love to draw the ball. Having a +7 swing path is a much better spot to be than -7, so I don't think you need much more than a small tweak. Without seeing your swing that's tough to make suggestions, I wouldn't want to steer you wrong. Could be as simple as your set up, maybe your stance is slightly closed? Always start from the ground up with the basics, sometimes swing fixes can be as simple as that.
In the discussion around the 3:30 point we might note he really has not started swinging or turning even having shifted his hips as a “first move” off the top. All that “width” was used to produce a bigger shoulder turn, and that accomplished he gets compact into the Hogan or Nicklaus position with the right elbow down and the right upper arm pretty close to the chest, and the shaft of the club still parallel to the ground - lots of “lag.”
Good observation, I wish I could transfer this knowledge into my swing mechanics. I need to create a SHORT list system of what to do starting with grip.. strong, address ball...howudoin...etc etc But that top of swing position at 2:01, with the club head well past horizontal is the key piece I am missing !! Barely reach vertical.. 90 degrees from horizontal. Thank you .
@@jmack619 Thanks for the kind words, glad you enjoyed watching! Past horizontal isn't a necessity for all swings, that mostly has to be paired with your individual timing/sequencing of your swing. I do like your idea of a short list system, I have a notes section in my phone with my top 3 swing focuses I'm working on and that produces good results for me. any time I'm struggling I refer to those three notes to see which one I might be neglecting. In terms of lost yards and power, speed training is honestly the most effective way to gain distance (and also improve your sequencing).
If you want the secret. He takes the club all the way back. If you understand what I mean, that’s all he does. He takes the club back online and never stops. If you endeavor to smoothly, take the club back, as far as you can, your downswing will be automatic .. if you need it said another way, if you take the club back smoothly online as far as you can in balance, there’s no way the club will stop. It will automatically transition.. there’s quite literally nothing to do … You’re welcome. By the way, this is what made John Daly great.. backswing never ends, which perfectly sequences the downswing
I feel like to man people try and swing their arms vs rotating and creating a whip with their arms and club. His power comes from his legs and body vs forcing his arms and hands at the ball.
Agreed, the separation between hips and shoulders is a big speed factor, in addition to using legs and the ground to produce efficient speed as you mentioned. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Do you really think he has a strong grip? At set up it looks like he has a neutral grip- the right hand doesnt look that open like a strong grip would indicate.
@@longdrivebryceagain, not sure where you are getting this. Are you eyeballing it or have you read it in reports? There are several articles online from reputable writers that claim his grip is indeed neutral
To comment that the finish is the “only” that’s is similar to Adams swing really shows a complete cluelessness about the golf swing in general. Which is true about 90% of the people watching these videos and I’d say 98% of the people trying to play this game.
Compare his elbow positions at impact with that Moe Norman video where he talks about similar elbow positions and how that is also Ben Hogans secret. In this video : ua-cam.com/users/liveFOJGxGPA4vU?si=NeAPH97hu4l3e6d1
Any speed training tools you recommend to get swing speeds like this?
Actually yea, Speed Toad linked in this video’s description is the only speed training tool and system I use

Thanks for watching! He does have some front elbow bend, I see it as well. Quite a few golfers have some front elbow bend, more than most think

Silky smooth power
Doesn’t get much smoother than this!
he won because of his great short games. his chipping skill is excellent.
That sure helped him close it out!
It really looks like he tops it into the stratosphere
It’s funny how sometimes it does look like that!
Nice analysis. Jake takes it back so far it looks like his left elbow bends a little.
Thank you! And I think it does bend a bit
Well done, sir 🫡

Very promising career ahead of him!

Always stay fit and healthy!
Do you really think he has a strong grip? At set up it looks like he has a neutral grip- the right hand doesnt look that open like a strong grip would indicate.
It’s one of the strongest on tour for sure
His tempo helps a lot but hard to be a consistent ball Striker, with his right arm so bent during and after transition.
Consistent enough to win on tour?
AHH, to be young and smart again.
Jake has a lot of things going for him. Especially having a great family supporting him
His grip is actually neutral, not strong. Not sure where you got that from.
That’s one of the strongest grips on tour right there

@@Mat_Scott right palm to the sky, back of left hand to the sky, definition of strong grip
You can see the entire V of his thumb on his right hand looking dead from the back , that’s a Hercules strong grip.
The finish is the only thing that is similar to Adam Scott. Adam Scott move slightly away from the ball in takeaway, not up but away
I referenced Adam Scott in the sense that these two guys have swings that I think would benefit everyone if they tried to emulate

Lot of similarities in that downswing!
Looks like Greg Norman at the top of his swing.
