    Excellent tips! I've hunted moose in Alaska for the past 28 years. My top 5 moose hunting mistakes: 1) Not enough patience...calling a bull, they take their time to respond and often we see a bull the evening after calling in the morning. 2) Expecting a bull to leave his cow to a call...it is better to be very aggressive and go to the bull if he has a cow. 3) Not shooting a bull because he is in water...just take a rope-come along, waders, and jet sleds. A bull moose will float in deep water and is easy to drag to shallow water with a rope-come along. 4) Shooting at the hump. The heart/lung boiler room is in the lower half of the body because of the large hump.
    5) Not glassing thoroughly enough. Moose have excellent hearing and smelling, the more glassing and less walking is usually more productive. Instead of looking for a whole moose, look for a white speck of antler that suddenly disappears and reappears in the spruce thickets.

    We are blessed in Alaska...residents can hunt moose for free over the counter tags. I enjoy calling a big bull up close and personal. Were we hunt a rope-come along, waders, and a jet sled is essential since they typically die in water....floating in deep water time to pull with a come-along to shallow water, then the waders and jet sled come in. It takes me 4-hours to solo butcher a bull moose.

    Great video. I'm confused though. Some guys are saying you want to call with the wind so the sound carries? Kind of makes sense but I've always thought you should have the wind in your face hunting any big game?

    • @NBWildman
      @NBWildman 4 роки тому +1

      In my experience there is no need for wind to carry a call, Moose have great ears and can hear a call for an incredible distance, you should always hunt with any wind in your face for sure with big game...

    Never hunted moose, got moose tag after 22 years of trying I have 64,000 square miles to hunt in my area, 2.5 months to get one and only 3 other hun ters to compete with, and the last 10 years every hunter that drew got a moose. I know every place in that area that has moose, 32% of it is private. My biggest worry is getting it out after it's down, I'm 58 and going to have to call in younger fellas to help pack it. Or harvest uphill close to road, big bulls are not c lose to the road in most cases, I have 2.5 .month's to scout.

    • @Unhinged29
      @Unhinged29 2 роки тому

      have you thought about getting an electric winch? A friend of mine drew a VT moose tag last year but Vermont doesn't allow vehicles off road and you need to show the entire moose at the check in station. Now they expect you will need to hire a draft horse or get a big group of people to pull the moose out but some enterprising hunters have figured out you can use a winch to move to moose about a hundred yards at a time from one tree to another without a ton of effort. conveniently he still has the winch so I don't have to buy my own after I somehow drew this year.

    In southern idaho the moose hunt is a once in a lifetime draw. You get about 2 and a half months to hunt. September October and part of November. People apply for years and give up trying never getting to draw. Maybe someday I'll get lucky.

    • @NBWildman
      @NBWildman 4 роки тому +1

      yea, here we have about a one in 65 chance of getting drawn, but your chances increase the longer you go without being drawn, we used to get 3 days to hunt, now we get 5

      @@NBWildman I have about a 6% chance to draw the area I want to hunt around my home. Idaho doesn't build points for years you don't draw. Every year you have the same chance to stare weather its your first try or 20th.
