I met Neil Cicierega on his Potter Puppet Pals tour, at a library in Indianapolis. Half the crowd was kids, and the other half was in their 20's, like me. We all joined in the goofy songs and laughed and had a great time. Some dude and I in the crowd had a long conversation about weird old videos we saw in the early internet days, like Fishmaster (that Nightwish misheard-lyrics video), and he introduced me to Van Canto (an acapella metal band). In that place there was just such a concentration of love for the weird and the curious and the creative, a love and childlike joy that Neil espouses. Neil was a real awkward dude, just like in this video, and when I spoke to him for a second at the merch table, we didn't talk much. I think I asked him about the Neville puppet or something, and I thanked him for such a fun memory in my childhood, and for doing this free concert just for the love of his art. I found out later that he did the Ultimate Showdown, one of the most oft-quoted internet things of my friends and I back in middle school. I had the same reaction we all have... "Wait, what? I've seen a handful of videos of this ilk, talking about how many different popular things Neil Cicierega has made, but I appreciate this video because of how emotionally driven/personal it feels-- this video is clearly a personal narrative first and a documentation of Neil's career second. With the more documentary-style videos, it always bugs me when they only talk about the really popular stuff... Speaking of which, if you're ever scrolling through Neil's youtube channel, I'd recommend checking out some of the videos that don't have a million+ views. One of my favorite Neil products is the web series "new kids on the rock", as well as guaranteed* video, which are made by Neil and two of his friends. Or, like, many of the less popular lemon demon songs are still catchy and worth listening to.... There's a lot of good stuff out there, and I feel like a lot of it gets overlooked
Quite literally the flash animated potter puppet pals were one of my earliest inklings of the internet. It's bizarre to see not only someone else who has had that exact same experience that I did but multiple people in the comments. It's as though the realization that all of these things trace to one singular creator- one who makes FANTASTIC MUSIC AND SKITS BY THE WAY- struck me as an absolute epiphany. It's like Neil inadvertently raised a lot of us. It's so weird knowing this sort of thing is exactly why everyone suddenly knows who Neil is now
I had a similar horrific realisation when I got into Deltarune and listened to Spamton playlists for the hell of it. So, yes, this all took place a year ago and I don't have too many early memories of being scarred by Neil's beautiful abominations. No matter who made the play list, it was "Lemon Demon" "Lemon Demon" and I thought I was safe when I read "Neil Cicierega" until someone informed me "no, that's still Lemon Demon". So, out of shame and feeling that I needed to prove something, I listened to more of his music. No word of a lie, that man has changed the trajectory of my life in little but a year. Before listening to his music, I was a quiet, scared stereotype, and now I'm making an animatic of Aurora Borealis where I'm trying to actually reign myself in for making it too disturbing. Tangent aside, I later googled him in similar fashion and it all struck me like a brick. He even wrote the demo for the unused Bill song in Gravity Falls. I've been whistling the little ending diddy in the Draco Malfoy episode of HPPP. This man has and always will continue to consume my entire life and I know I am not his only victim.
