I worked in the Taklamakan desert between 1985-1987 and when we left there, they gave us all a Uyghur knife each, before we flew out from Urumqi. They did take them off us for the plane trip back to Beijing, but were reunited with them. Razor sharp and in a nice leather sheath, I still have that knife today.
I managed to buy one of these knives about 2 years ago from a Chinese website and shipped to the UK for a very reasonable price, this was before some very sad incidents in Xinjiang and the resulting turmoil in the area.. They make the blades out of 52100 ball bearing steel and they really are well made and well ground from carbon steel.
Josh this video is simply amazing. Great production, man. I loved checking out all the knives in Kashgar when I visited, but next time I'm in XinJiang I'll have to visit Yengisar to get myself one of those blades. Hope all's well!
Thank you for the insight of the knives. My husband and I are blacksmiths in Texas and really appreciate the craftsmanship of his work.. I wonder if he can sell to the usa?
My pleasure! Glad you enjoyed it. Unfortunately, these knife factories no longer exist so I'm glad I was able to capture this on film before it went away. Also, I'm from Texas (Dallas to be exact). I'm always happy to see fellow Texans stopping by!
I have a beautiful old little Yengisar knife given to me by one of my Uyghur students when I taught at a Chinese college. The high carbon steel is well tempered, tough but hard, holds a great edge, and has field-dressed and skinned many a deer. I was lucky that it made it home in my checked bag. I have had a number of other knives (American made that I like to carry with me as gifts) go missing from checked bags in China. It's very hit and miss.
+Travel Xinjiang: Far West China Actually no, a few years ago. my most recent trip was a year ago May. I taught English at XDF for 2 years. I love that part of China, more cultural variety, food and my preferred climate.
Travel Xinjiang: Far West China hey bro i had the knife the is showing in the minute 1:22 the big one on the sign out side with the owl on the blade i wondering if that's an antique. can you email me a response please julioquirospatas@gmail.com. thank you i finally knw were it. ome from
Hello Josh.I want to buy some yengisar knives .Do you know where i could buy in Urumqi. If you know ,could you please tell me in time and thanks very much in advance
I'm only 16 but I find these knives very interesting. I'd love to have my hand on one of those one day, but I heard that it's impossible to take it back home overseas. Anyone know any way for taking it overseas?
Honestly, I'm not sure. All the knife makers I talked with didn't know how to do it. My guess is that you would need to push hard to make it happen but that if you push hard enough, it can be done. Let me know how it goes!
I'll certainly let you know. I am thinking on buying one and taking it to the China Post myself and see if i can get it done that way. Sometimes when i buy items in China that would be difficult to take on an airplane due to size etc, i have shipped them to myself back in the states. Anyway, thank you for these useful videos, i bought your ebook as well so i can prepare my trip to Xinjiang this coming June.
@@FarWestChina I just bought two knives from kashgar and sent them back to my home in yunnan province(a province of China). My suggestion is that you should confirm with the seller whether he can help you with the express business before you buy the knife. Also, don't buy a knife with a blade larger than 10cm.

Thank you, Kevin! Now all I need to do is to convince you to come out here to Xinjiang to do a "Xinjiang on $20/day" video of yours ;)

I'm sorry to hear that you've lost stuff in your checked bags!
I bought a knife in Wulumuqi, put it in my checked bag, no problems to USA. it was about an 8 inch blade.
So good to hear! When was this, Dan? A recent trip?

Wait... there's a product for which the label "Made in China" is not a drawback?
Is it possible to buy one of these in Yengisar and ship it to the states through China Post right in town?

Hi Zenel, looking forward to hear if you were able to ship these knives to the US.
How did it go? Was it successful?
