Thanks for the shout out Robin. Hope you enjoy my novel, The Undying. It's great seeing it finished and into the hands of a reader. Best wishes, Karl.

@@bookspin I hope you enjoy reading it as much I enjoyed writing it. This simply started as a means to draw me away from browsing social media while at work, during downtime. Turned out, I really enjoyed the process and decide to kept it going. When you finish, know that the second is done and heading off to the editors and a third is in the works. 👍

I read Greybeard and Nova earlier this year and enjoyed both.

So fun that Adrian Tchaikovsky drew those cartoons with his signature. First time I've heard the term Wyndhamesque. Look forward to your review of Snakeskins. Lucas Parkes is actually a pseudonym for John Wyndham! The Outward Urge comes out after The Day of the Triffids, The Kraken Wakes, The Chrysalids and The Midwich Cuckoos. It is a return to a pulp fiction type space novel. Very different than the other four novels preceding it. I think Wyndham uses the pseudonym to explain a change in style and content. The apprehension was warranted. It is definitely a step down. I really liked Rite of Passage by Alexei Panshin. It is a great coming of age story in the vain of, but earlier and better than The Hunger Games. Great, great haul!

Thank you! That's interesting to know, first time I've heard of an author 'collaborating' with their pen name!
There are so many books among these vintage hardbacks that intrigue me, it's difficult to decide where to start. You've definitely piqued my interest in Rite of Passage. I'm also very tempted to start reading the Asimov, Henderson and Zelazny short story collections soon.

Bumper haul there! If you decide to jettison the Pan Inverted World, I'd happily take it off your hands. 😊

Ah yes you're collecting the Pan lozenge books if I remember right? I think I will indeed be letting this one go and keeping the SFBC hardback! Perhaps we can sort something out on Discord

That’s a good haul. I’ve read the trouble with Lichen. It’s an interesting concept, I just didn’t like the setting the story was set in. I get why the concept and setting would go together for the story, it just wasn’t a setting i was interested in.

I own that edition of The Wind's Twelve Quarters! I actually love LeGuin's short stories - I think she excels in that form. I think The Compass Rose and TWTQ are my two favorite collections. The collections do mix genre - scifi, fantasy, and I think there are one or two from Orsinia (fictional Eastern European country)? Or are all those in Orsinian Tales? Ah, it's been a while.
I was a member of the Science Fiction Book Club for a short time back in the early 80s. Still have my Dragonriders of Pern from then. A book I read from that collection that I've mislaid but wish I still had is Courtship Rite by Donald Kingsbury - never hear anyone else talk about it, but it stuck with me.
I know I read some Frederick Pohl back in the day (probably from the SFBC), but apparently they were forgettable, because I don't remember which titles nor any impression good/bad.

That's good to hear! I've enjoyed everything I've read by Le Guin so I will happily save this book as a palate cleanser between longer novels and series. And thanks for the Courtship Rite recommendation - I will look into it.

What great finds! I have Children of Time on my TBR as well as many John Wyndham novels. Rendezvous with Rama is also on my radar and curious about Snakeskins. Will be interested to hear your thoughts. Random aside, I really like your t-shirt with the old diving helmet!

"The Saliva Tree" is an outstanding story, especially if you're also a fan of H.G. Wells.

Nice haul. It's too bad the hardbacks don't have good artwork. That's why I usually hunt for vintage paperbacks.

Seagulls Gather included Revolt In 2100 in his video covering his 5 best Heinlein novels, which probably doesn't include the ones you didn't like.
I almost spilled my Earl Grey (joke) when you said, I don't know if I'm gonna keep that one!
Please don't cancel Grand Masters, they all wrote bad books at some point.
And it's best not to judge them before reading their best short stories.
This haul contains so many unknown titles from authors I do know, besides the few classics you pointed out, that I fear you might have a bunch of pot boilers in the lot.
Thanks for sharing the passion! Seven

Thanks! I will keep it in the collection then. My experience with Heinlein so far is I liked some of his ideas but didn't enjoy his characterisation or writing style, especially his tendency to use his characters as a mouthpiece for his own (often questionable) political beliefs. But I will give him another chance. I still need to read Stranger in a Strange Land.

You're welcome! I know it is not easy to separate the grain from the chaff.
A lot of those authors have "phases" or periods when their writing changes.
For Heinlein the turning point was Starship Troopers, his first non YA book.
His earlier books are fun and not as heavy handed with ideas like his latter ones.
At his worst Heinlein's soapbox tirades become unbearable. I think his last books were written after he had a stroke or something.
Sorry to say, but at the stage you are where people are sending books to review, you now have obligations. I know because I went through it with my own now defunct channel.
To satisfy a growing viewership you have to cover all bases and delve even into what you don't like much or have little interest in. You won't suffer much reading The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress, but you're permitted to skip Heinlein's end of career behemoths!
Now for John Brunner, also an arc from producing decent space operas to writing more seriously. Four of his novels are absolute musts, Stand On Zanzibar, The Jagged Orbit, The Shockwave Rider, and The Sheep Look Up. These are earth-shakers. The others are fun entertainment of varying quality.
In Asimov's 9 Tomorrows do not miss another of his famous stories, The Ugly Little Boy..
      Cheers, 7

Thanks! I have read The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress - I'm afraid I didn't enjoy it that much. But I will keep an open mind. Thanks for the Brunner and Asimov recommendations.
I don't always accept review copies unless it looks like something I would genuinely want to read, and even then I let the author/publisher know I may not get round to it anytime soon. I definitely need to slow down on the book hoarding!
