This is so true, La Bayadere was a landmark production for American Ballet Theater and Natalia Makarova's influence on the corps de ballet cannot be underestimated. It really elevated them to a higher place. I saw that production when it was first in their Repertory and it was wonderful.
I really enjoyed learning about the history of La Bayadere at ABT and especially the part about it being so critical that the corps de ballet not be like soldiers but instead a living breathing organism. I think it is such a beautiful point and really gives us insight about how important the breath is. Thank you so much Susan Jones for sharing all these details.
Always loved Susan Jones. She always had this big smile on her face in The Nutcracker with Gelsey Kirkland and Swan Lake in 1977 with Makarova. Saw a video recently of her playing the Nurse in Romeo and Juliet again with Makarova.
I loved listening to Susan Jones!! I love learning about the old history of ABT and some amazing dancers that were part of the company then, like the stunning Natalia Makarova!
A woman who has devoted her, life to dance. And to make the corps de ballet good and great sometimes....remember her early 70 as a young dancer in the company
Hello, just came across your video last night. By chance, my mother had a cousin Jane Jones. She had a daughter named Susan that was a Principal Ballerina. I am curious if this might be you?? My mother’s name was Jean Stahl.

I enjoyed it but could have lived without the silly cartoon imagery inserted in Jones's recounting of the plot of Bayadere.
