Well this is right up my ally for a good part of 25 years. I install remote starters. The Idatalink ALCA assists the remote starter in getting tach signal, as well as lock, unlock, trunk release, hood status, and brake pedal as well as security key bypass. It doesn't allow for factory alarm or disarm control though. In a hardwire hook up that is what all the ALCA wires are for. In hooking up via data mode you'd only need the data connector plus the CAN and door lock wires from the blue plug. Typically I use the all in one models such as Directed's DS3 or 4 or the Idatastart models HC1151A etc. You experienced data collisions on the Fiat's CAN wiring. Instant problem. Remote starters and anything aftermarket get a bad rap for causing problems. Sometimes they do, sometimes not. It's all good until it isn't. I really enjoy the stuff you get into! -Jon
@@WatchJRGo in the UK a lot of companies use the electronic Power Steering systems off Vauxhall Corsa's. I'm not sure if there's anything using that system in the US.
I install idatastart units at my store, and yes the ALCA unit interprets the CANBUS data for the remote start, but it primarily talks to the vehicle immobilization system, making it think a factory key is present. Having multiple aftermarket systems connect to the factory CANBUS can create issues. That being said, there are other GPS trackers that only require battery, ignition power and ground.
Sooo true. I think it’s more about the shelf life of the resin. Once exposed to air it begins to cure. I have to use a special gas when resealing my resins (carbon fiber layup) to prolong the shelf life. It’s heavier than air and basically forces it out of the container.
I have that exact car, and I'm looking to install a remote start on it. Can you let me know what product(s) it is you're using? Thanks! I watched the whole video, and I saw the iDatalink device, but that doesn't seem to be necessary without the GPS? Not sure. Any help/direction would be much appreciated!
You can upgrade the headlights with LEDs I used HIKARI 2022 HyperStar 9012/HIR2. It takes a low beam light. The headlight housing angles up for the highs. I have them, haven't had any flicker issues and I don't need to use my fogs
I've found that Viper remote starts hold up well (factory is obviously the best). A lot of these other aftermarket brand remote starters stop working after a couple years
On my GXP, I got the big wheel K04 from Performance Autowerks. Tons of power, super-reliable, and it spools much faster than the stock unit. They also have stellar customer service. IIRC it was around $1500 without a core. The car had about 90k miles when I installed it. Sold the car ~20k miles later and it was still running strong. I also upgraded to the Opel injectors (super easy modification in HP Tuners - just adjust the injector scale & offset), which might not have been necessary. With those mods, it was actually faster than my LS3 C6 up until the first shift. If you're set on replacing the engine, look up ATK. While you're throwing money around & pulling the engine, I'd consider an aluminum flywheel. DDM Works has a great kit with a single-mass flywheel, clutch and all the misc. bits you need for around $1200. It works out about the same cost as a Spec unit with a dual-mass flywheel, but it's quite a bit lighter and, let's face it, dual-mass flywheels suck.
I actually have a small pouch for tools on which I have written and marked the limits for tool sizes on airplanes in the USA and EU - one is overall length, the other is blade length, so you need both markings, can't just use the shorter length. Fortunately the tools I carry are just electronics tools.
I'm sure you gave him a deal on it too. I guess no good deed goes unpunished. You guys will get it figured out, watching now. Actually I spent a hour or so ripping the after market dealer installed anti theft setup in my Neon so I could drive it home. BUT, I did have some tools in my work van and I still had to twist some wires together till I could take the time to redo it right. I had the bottom cover off and had to trace the added wiring and piece it back together. Most folks definitely wouldn't be able to figure stuff like that out and fix it in a parking lot.

You reminded me of the family's first remote control TV. Must have been in early 1960"s. Us kids would be home watching cartoons after school and every time the phone would ring TV would change channels. We were on a phone party line. Drove us nuts... Dad finally called TV repairman and he said nothing could be done except disconnect remote mechanism on TV. Life and times in the "good ol' days". Thanks for bringing back the memory.
@@austinalbright9837 I never saw a wire free remote in the UK till the 80's that was a luxury TV. Our first Video recorder had a wire remote you would trip up over or pull the cable out.. then we got a proper VHS with a infra red remote in 1989!!
The Idatalink unit does more than tach sense. It will do door locks/trunk and security as well as various interrupts the car may need to see for remote start mode. The biggest thing it will do though is the immobilizer key bypass. It is probably just an error it's creating on the OBD II circuit that's causing the issue. If the idatalink was the problem, it would probably need to be re-flashed. Be careful just removing the bypass module because some of the many wires coming off it may be interrupting factory wiring (internal relay), which may lead to other issues. Also, most remote starters has tach-less mode. It's in the programming for the Avital. It will look for the voltage jump from 12v up to 13.4v for confirmation that the car is running.

Or just go through the engine and slap a new KO4 on there. I bought a new spare KO4 for mine just to have for like 250 bucks.
