That is what great acting is all about. It is more than just reading what is written, it is in his body language, facial expressions, tone and accent. I love that throughout the movie Doc is totally a shadow of fear. His intelligence and skill make him a force even his friends approach with caution when in a drunken state. And when he's lucid hes like a walking undertaker. At the very end you can see Ringos true feelings surface when he says he was just messing about. Under all the cool from the beginning everyone was aware you dont fuck with Doc Holiday.
A big part of that is that he didn’t fear death, in fact he welcomed it. As man with his disease was just a walking corpse eventually, he knew it was simply inevitable, and viewed it almost as a death wish, he played this well by showing people that he didn’t really care if he lived or died during an encounter. So people naturally began to grow cautious of the man, especially when it involved violence.

So, Historian Here. This movie is the most accurate version of the OK Corral I've seen. Accounts state that had Doc not been there, the fight may not have happened. Virgil and Wyatt were deadset on disarming the Clantons, not a gunfight. Doc antagonized Ike Clanton (Who was, in reality, armed) into drawing.
Agreed. It's such a great moment that rings true today. There are so many encounters with law enforcement where someone escalates an already dangerous situation and everything goes to hell. Here we have a moment where no one (save Doc), really wants a full on shoot out which could get them killed. But Doc is only a few months from death anyway and he's more than happy to be the straw that breaks the camel's back.
@@NickKnutson97 One detail they get wrong is that the Earps already had their guns drawn (most likely holding them at their sides). This seemingly small advantage was arguably a big part of why they suffered so few injuries and the cowboys (who had to actually draw their guns), suffered so many. There's also an interesting theory that the cowboys may have been trying to disarm and the Earps mistakenly thought they were drawing to shoot them. Virgil testified that he said, "Throw up your hands - I want your guns!" The problem, of course, is that you can't keep your hands up while you're throwing down your guns. Because Ike Clanton had been wandering around town telling everyone that he and the cowboys were going to fight the Earps, it's totally possible that the Earps were now so prepared for a fight that they didn't realize that Billy may have been trying to surrender. Of course, no one can really say since we weren't there. What the film does get 100% right is that Ike, the person perhaps most reasonable for stirring everyone up for a fight and creating the situation, totally chickened out when the shooting started and ran away, claiming he was unarmed. There's clearly some kind of lesson to be found here about those who want to act tough and, by doing so, end up getting other people killed.
Kurt Russell "secretly" directed this movie, after the original director was fired. Kurt reshaped the entire movie and made it a story about two best friends. Every scene where Wyatt is in some kind of trouble or shootout, the first person to show up is Doc. Doc loved Wyatt like a brother, but Wyatt is portrayed as a little 'unaware' of this. Wyatt gets the hint when he tells Doc, "This isn't your fight, Doc". Doc was extremely offended and said "That is a HELL of a thing for you to say to me!". After the ensuing shootout, where Doc had Wyatt’s back, Wyatt finally understands the unspoken love and unwavering loyalty that Doc had for him. From then on, it's the Wyatt and Doc show. Kurt etches this theme in stone with the sanitorium scene. Wyatt presents Doc with the book, which is a straight-up love letter (and secured Doc's place in history). Then, Wyatt can't bring himself to leave his 'brother' there to die alone. He does so only out of the monumental respect he has for Doc and his tearful request to do so. Wyatt leaves with the greatest compliment Doc, a man who had no friends, could hope to hear, "Thanks for always being there, Doc". It's a soft, touching, and thunderous scene.

The mustaches deserved an oscar as well as Val Kilmer. The chemistry is off the charts. This movie could have been called Testosterone. Most quotable movie ever
Straight up robbed. This movie and kilmer's character have stood the test of time. Speaking of, kilmer didnt even get an oscar nod. Oscars are a joke and have been political for a long time. Goodfellas and tombstone were robbed at the Oscars thier respective years.
Val Kilmer played the definitive version of Doc Holliday. His portrayal of this fearless man slowly dying of consumption was perfect, yet he was ignored for an Academy award. Superb acting in a superb film.
I like his role in that, but I have to believe that Dennis Quaid as Doc Holiday in "Wyatt Earp" was much more historically accurate in regards to authenticity of the character, the story, and of the times. I truly enjoy both movies but personally I like Quaid's version better.
Actually, he was not ignored. He was not a member of the Academy and you have to be to get nominated for an Oscar. Val did not want to join the academy because he thought it was too political. He may have joined since the movie. My friend worked with him on the movie 'Heat' and Val told him this.
“Now get the hell outa Dodge” Believe me, I CAN say that. Im from and live in the greatest little cowtown in the west, where I call home. And yes we do still ride horses down dirt roads. And also cars. On asphalt, concrete, and bricks (it’s the worst). We aren’t that uncivilized
@Steve L and @neckbreakerlifetaker HA! Finally someone else who noticed! Additionally, earlier in the stand off with Ringo... Michael Biehn and Val Kilmer's flamboyant gun-spinning and reciprocating shot tin spinning. If you're a fan of the movie, you've likely tried to imitate the motions and realize how damn difficult it is.
I read this comment by someone who realized that while everyone else was going "Wow" at' Ringo's show, Doc Holiday was carefully analyzing the speed and technique of Ringo's draw and after that knew exactly how fast Ringo was.
Thats the point of the whole scene casual viewers wont notice and just think its a cool little back and forth but in the context of the movie as a whole its really important. He learns all ringos tells like its a poker game.
I always took it as ringo trying to bait him to draw his gun and so a show and he would shoot him saying it was a fair fight, but doc had probably played that game already with someone else.
i believe Doc said "I'm your huckle bearer". "I'm your huckleberry" theoretically means I'm the right man for the job. "I'm your huckle bearer" means I am your pallbearer which makes 100x more sense coming from a man who is there to kill you.
If you think back friend it's actually a callback to the first time he says it in the film when Wyatt and his brothers refuse to fight Johnny Ringo. As they walk away he shouts a great line after them: "You wretched slugs! Don't any of you have the guts to play for blood?" to which Doc replies "I'm your huckleberry" completely in line with the original meaning about being the man for the job. Everyone forgets the line in the showdown is referring back to the earlier one (besides it makes sense at the end too. Doc is the replacement in the final duel and Ringo is stood waiting for someone to show up). All that aside you can see the original script and it is 100% "huckleberry." Not sure how it has becone such a debating point tbh - the film is full of period slang. "Daisy" is another as is the slug line from Ringo - haha "slug" should make a comeback as an insult.
If you have not seen "New York 1997" yet, do so. Yes an old movie, but such a good one :) Also recommend the oldest "The thing". Both with Kurt Russels ofc.
Actually Kurt carried the movie from behind the camera. Production was falling apart and Kurt gave up scenes and helped with direction to make it work. Kilmer, I agree was totally screwed out of an Oscar.
Apollo B. He didnt get the nomination because at the time Kilmer had a reputation for being difficult to work with, unpleasant on the set and a bit weird ( at one point he forbade people of certain astrological signs from being around him) .

Can we talk about Micheal Biehns performance too, everyone always praises Val Kilmer, and yes- this is by far his best acting in any movie, but i love love love Johnny Ringo too, everytime i think about that character I wish there was a back story to him, and Biehn played him with such intensity, he was fantastic in the role. They were perfect arch-enemies.
I love Michael Biehn, but everybody praises Doc not because it’s Val’s best role (which is debatable, he’s had many) but a role like Johnny Ringo’s really isn’t a hard role to play. A role like Doc Holliday and playing it WELL is a much harder feat to accomplish. Val could have easily played a role like Johnny Ringo in his sleep.
Every single actor was awesome in this film imho. But yeah, Val’s performance was the best in my book. Definitely deserved an Oscar nod, what a rip off. Great film, very memorable!
Tuberculosis is definitely a huge part of what made Doc so dangerous. He was a dead man walking, and he knew it. That and the fact that he was brought up as a southern gentleman meant that he would not tolerate certain behavior.
JokersWild45 Doc lived each day as if it was his last. He was already facing the worst in his life with TB,,,so He had nothing to loose. I admire him for that. He made the Best of whatever was left.

As amazing as Val Kilmer was as Doc Holliday, we need to note how superb Michael Biehn was as his foil, Johnny Ringo. Stephen Lang was his usual solid self as the cowardly Ike Clanton. And Sam Elliot? The voice, moustache, face...just exudes the essence of cowboy.
James Cameron was initially thinking of casting Biehn as Col. Miles Quaritch in “Avatar” but thought it might seem like too much of an “Aliens” reunion with Sigourney Weaver in the movie. So he switched to his second choice: Stephen Lang.
Val Kilmer is a hardcore method actor who goes all out. He learned to play piano specifically for this movie. No matter what you think of the man, he is a dedicated talented insane force of nature and iconic playing Doc Holliday, Jim Morrison, Madmartigan, Batman, Simon Templar, Chris Shiherlis, Gay Perry, Moses, and even God. GIVE THE MAN HIS DAMN OSCAR PLEASE AND THANK YOU.
Watch "Felon". He is the perfect example of a lifer that doesn't give a fuck. (I've been to prison). The line about wiping out the other persons entire bloodline is bone chilling and awesome. It sucks what he's going through now. The cancer and how bad he looks. Can't even talk. It's sad. A great man no matter what.
Kevin Jarre was the screenwriter who created this story and wrote so many of these wonderful lines for Tombstone. Several lines were added by Russell and Kilmer during shooting but the story and dialogue are still primarily Jarre's. Jarre passed in 2011, aged 56, of a heart attack. Please tip your hat to him!
@@mohammedcohen Can't believe it's taken 2 years for someone to answer your query but yes, they are related: Maurice Jarre married his mom and the stepson took his stepdad's last name.
"Maybe poker's just not your game, Ike... I know, let's have a spelling contest!" Possibly the greatest line in cinema history. Doc not only beats Ike, and takes his money. But he insults his intelligence all at the same time. Brilliant!
Most of these actors should have got an Emmy or what ever for this movie. This is one of the best historical “re-enactments” I have ever seen. I have lived in SW Kansas all my life and grew up knowing this history. I live just a little bit from the street name after Wyatt and Boothill Cemetery. This history runs thru me. “Get the hell outta Dodge” is one of the best sayings I know. It means “You don’t belong here, get lost before someone makes you disappear “
Yes I totally agree that Val's performance in this movie is spot on and oscar worthy, but can we ignore the fact that every cast on this movie is perfect? Even the bad guys, the cowboys. The script, the scenery. This movie is definitely on the top 5 in legendary movies of all time, if there are any.

I've read that Kurt deliberately took fewer scenes in order to get the rest of the cast signed. He helped finance the movie after the original producer and/or director pulled out.
I've seen this movie over 12 times. It was some of the best films and memories I shared with my grandpa Melroy Gerard Didier that raised me.unfornatuntly he is no longer alive but his spirit still lives on in me and I'm proud of that till this day.👌
best western ever, nobody could have done better playing Doc. I have seen it so many times I can quote it word for word. The strain was more than he could bare
Was it Strain or String? (He had just told him, "You were just too high strung".) "I believe the STRAIN/STRING was more than you could bear." Probably viewed this scene a hundred times, and I am still not 100% sure of what he said! lol! Great scene, should have included the line, "I didn't think you had it in ya."
I think it's incredible how you can see the change in Kurt's eyes at 2:37, he turns from a friendly neighborhood lawman to a cold blooded killer in that instant.
Best part is he doesn't even use his fists. He just bitch slaps Billy Bob Thornton. Slapping him like that was adding insult to injury, he was daring Thornton even harder to try something.
The Greatest Western that was ever made. Tomestone, Val Kilmer portrayed Doc Holiday brilliantly, probably even better than Doc Holiday himself, the Legend. My all time favorite movie .

Val Kilmer played the definitive version of Doc Holliday. His portrayal of this fearless man
slowly dying of consumption was perfect, yet he was ignored for an Academy award.
Michael Dover Quaid was magnificent. However the sheer length of "WE", made it a daunting watch for many people.
That's definitely true. Time must be invested to watch "Wyatt Earp" in one sitting. I would still rank it up there as a great movie.
Actually, he was not ignored. He was not a member of the Academy and you have to be to get nominated for an Oscar. Val did not want to join the academy because he thought it was too political. He may have joined since the movie. My friend worked with him on the movie 'Heat' and Val told him this.
so right
Val Kilmer being cheated out of an Oscar is just further evidence that the Oscars are all about politics, and have nothing to do with quality.

Seriously and the way he says it is absolutely perfect and I’m not a movie buff but hats off
@Steve L and @neckbreakerlifetaker HA!
@@rawnarrative I am a movie buff, and I, too, say 'hats off' to Kilmer's performance as Doc. He's indeed a daisy.
Yep doc knew right then ringo was a lightweight. Art of war , every battle is won Before it has begun
He also ascertained that Wyatt couldn’t beat Ringo.
"I've only yet begun to defile myself" such an iconic line
"I'm your huckleberry.....Why Johnny Ringo, you look like somebody just walked over your grave."
That's just my game.
"We played for blood....remember?"
Bone chilling
i believe Doc said "I'm your huckle bearer".
"Daisy" is another as is the slug line from Ringo - haha "slug" should make a comeback as an insult.
kurt russell has an extraordinary sense of picking great films to work in. he deserves a lot more credit than what is afforded to him.

The whole Johnny and Doc dynamic is always a good reminder that no matter how tough you are, there is always someone tougher.
"I have _two_ guns"
Lol, thought that one through basically saying. "I'm a drunk.... but I'm a _functioning_ drunk."
Thurnis Haley genuinely my favorite line
Oh hell's yeah.
@@franklinberg5139 same
He’s saying if he was seeing double...one gun for the man...one for the other one...funny line
"Touch that gun I'll burn you down"
That set the tone for the whole movie the time and the place.
The Greatest Western that was ever made. Tomestone, Val Kilmer portrayed Doc Holiday brilliantly, probably even better than Doc Holiday himself, the Legend. My all time favorite movie .
Daniel Morgan no lonsome dove the outlaw years was very good but Call is no Doc
Daniel Morgan I prefer some of the older 50s 60s 70s Westerns over this one
sirvando vargas Hombre was every bit as strong!
Bone Tomahawk might have pipped it. Kurt Russell + a great cast in that too.
sirvando vargas Hombre was stronger.
This movie is timeless! Best western ever! Doc Holiday is my favorite character.
Vil is a great actor as Kirt all the cast are supute.
The Holiday character made this film, Also the actor who played Ike Clanton did a great Job.
Brodoc Betty - That would be Stephen Lang.
I beg to differ sir great as this movie is Clint Eastwood's unforgiven was better do to his history of Westerns and it being his last Western it was great but this is a very close second
I never saw this movie till last night.
I'm sorry I waited so long.
18661873 He meant to say that he would be your huckleberry...
badlandskid Yeah, I didn't quite get the "you're home now son" reference. Was that in Tombstone or another classic western I missed.
***** And I love it CatDog.
18661873 You're no daisy..... you're no daisy at all! Poor soul, you were just too high strung.
I hear ya. I actually visited Tombstone but that was 4 years ago and I only watched this for the 1st time last night. It's not fair. D'X
“Johnny I’m sorry I forgot you were there. You may go now”…😂
