- It doesn't happen like this anymore, but back in the computer days you'd sometimes just end up with a bunch of floppy disks full of games. While there were usually specific games you were looking for on each disc, they'd be filled up with bootleg copies of who-knows-what. Back when I was obsessed with my Atari 800, I stumbled my way into disks full of mystery games. No instructions, no idea where they came from, how were they played? There was only one way to find out. This time out, let's take a look at Zeppelin and Hard Hat Willy for the Atari 800, two games that I just kinda ended up with... but both made a lasting impression. As a bonus, one of these games seemed to never end up actually being released? Weird. Weird!

I could watch Hard Hat Willy all day. I don't know why, but it totally takes me back to the excitement and dread of loading up a bunch of mysterious floppy disks and getting mesmerized at something you'd never seen before. My top memory is finding the shareware version of Wolfenstein 3D (written as WOLF in sharpie) and some adventure game called Dave Dude.
My oddest moment in the piracy days was probably that the first encounter I had with Wolfenstein 3D was actually a modded version called Enigma's Nightmare that had new levels and graphics, and released on BBSes in 1993. Didn't play the real Wolf3D until the late 90s.
Used to have stacks of bootleg 5.25" compilation flippy disks. Good times.

Zeppelin is sick.
Most of my Atari/Commodore stuff, when I was a kid, came from my uncle who managed the regional "Murphy's Mart" in the local mall. The catch is, I only got the stuff as it was being discontinued/liquidated, and I was way too young to ever be aware of the 80's video game crash, so all of that stuff was completely fresh for me. I had a metric ton of 2600 and Commodore games, but only a small hand full of 800 games, and the only one I can distinctly remember playing a lot of was Buck Rogers: Planet of Zoom.
Zeppelin and Hard Hat Willy are both complete unknowns to me, but I enjoyed the exposure to them both.

Hardhat Willie is almost like an open world Pac-Man. Very interesting game. That death animation is crazy tho
Hardhat Willie is rad as hell. That's sad if it never got released. It feels like it could've been a big deal. It has a sexual innuendo title just like Puck-Man too.
