    Are we still evolving? - what kind of silly question is that? Of course we are! Anyone who knows a thing about science will know that evolution never stops, it is continuous. There is no 'end goal' in the process - just adaptation to the environment. Basic, basic science here.

    • @AllTwoCentsibleGuy
      @AllTwoCentsibleGuy 10 років тому

      Watch out. I believe you are treading the line between evolution and natural selection. Whenever you talk about the environment, you are talking about natural selection.

    • @supercakefish
      @supercakefish 10 років тому +12

      Natural selection is the process behind evolution. That is universally accepted among the scientific community. Trust me, I did a biology degree - I'd hope I know what I'm talking about!

    • @AllTwoCentsibleGuy
      @AllTwoCentsibleGuy 10 років тому +1

      I am aware that natural selection is a product of evolution. It just sounded like you were mixing the two.
      Just because you "did" a biology degree doesn't mean you have one. ;)

      In fact, it's part of the definition of the word organism. An organism can't be an organism unless it evolves.

      mammals evolved from synapsids, synapsids were animals that had traits of mammals and reptiles. apes including humans are mammals. evolution is not a dog giving birth to a new species it is a dog giving birth to a slightly genetically different dog. same with every single animal in history. every single animal has given birth to the same species as, it. when populations split new lineages are made. no monkeys made humans, we are a totally separate lineage. humans and chimps came from a common ancestor but when the ancestor split into other populations they were not suddenly humans and chimps, they would still have looked identical to the common ancestor but since they were separated they would have become more genetically different as time went on. eventually becoming modern humans and chimps. humans and chimps are just names, they are not actually real as in they are just name tags. so now you can see that your problem *"mutated monkey needed another mutated monkey of opposite sex to give the first offspring of human"* makes no sense at all.

    • @kamjoe380
      @kamjoe380 10 років тому +1

      The mere purpose of that evolution theory is tell us humans that there is no God and such thing called creator, according what you just said is we came from common Ancestor , so there is no creation, based on that the theory of Adam and Eve is a myth. The evolution theory by its name implies it is just theory and nothing to support it..
      When all animals including humans die and you check their ashes , it is all the same and all coming from one source (mud). but this does not mean all animals are the same.
      bottom line, creation theory and God involvement make more sense than the theory of , it just happened.

      You are really ignorant of science and evolution.... i think you just want to believe in your god and thats it, you don't care about the truth, evidence or facts. I don't know how you can honestly be debating this when you don't know jack about it. If so you should just stay in your bubble and never comment on science videos again.. you should probably never use technology either. You don't even know what you are arguing against...

    I feel like this completely misses the basic premise of evolution. Evolution is not pushing us towards some higher form or making us smarter or stronger or anything else. Evolution is simply a measurement of change that has occurred in a species as it is subjected to environmental pressures over generations. "Survival of the fittest" doesn't mean being actually fit in terms of health, it means fit as in best fits into its environment. Intelligence is certainly not one of the traits that nature commonly selects for. The fittest forms of life are bacteria, as they have fit into their environment for billions of years. We can say that humans are highly evolved because we have changed drastically from our bacterial ancestors, but that evolution is not necessarily an improvement.

    • @lifecon1

    • @keeganmaloney3440
      @keeganmaloney3440 10 років тому +1

      logicisonmyside Well that's not exactly true, we pass on immunity through our genes all the time, it's one of the fastest developing traits. That benefits us greatly.

    • @lifecon1
      @lifecon1 10 років тому

      yeah but that is at a loss of genetic information. It's basicly saying we get benefits, BUT we have to lose something to achieve that. never just gaining a benefit on its own. there is always a sacrifice

    • @keeganmaloney3440
      @keeganmaloney3440 10 років тому

      logicisonmyside umm, well if you want to get really technical, you are usually right. there will almost always be a down side because you will have to use more energy on the cellular level to make enzymes that have additional mechanisms, or to use more of this and that in the cell, but it is not correct as a principal.
      there are several adaptations that fall under the category of optimisations, that are just plain better versions of what they once where.
      also, immunities are not principally deletions. many immune factors are additions or mutations genetically speaking.
      I dont mean to be harsh, but maybe you should do some more research before talking about this stuff.

    • @Mbrace818
      @Mbrace818 10 років тому

      Bacteria have fit into their environment for billions of years because they are the first organisms in existence, not because they are the fittest.
      Also, Bacteria comprise an entire domain, the highest rank in taxonomy, which is unfair to compare to smaller ranked clades like species.

      although controversial, dont forget that there are people who exist today who are weak and mentally deficient. if it wasnt for our good and civilized society these people would not be able to or would die before procreation. you might scream darwinism but the fact is it existed and still exists to this day in animals. im not saying those people shoudnt procreate but them doing so might add in more mutations.

    To those saying something like "if evolution was real, why are there still monkeys?"
    We are not directly descended from monkeys, we just share a common ancestor.
    Evolution isn't based on the overpower of a species, like one species doesn't replace another when it evolves. Groups of a singular species split (by natural or other reasons), and through time they become a new species genetically different from the original. These new species are similar to the other that they descended from, but are genetically different and may hold different physical characteristics. And evolution doesn't happen in the drop of a hat, it takes a VERY long time, through gradual change. These changes also ones decided by natural selection, the traits that the surviving members of a species share.

      Evolution makes sense, but can't really be proven. That is the creationist's argument. That could be true if they had a better hypothesis, one they could explain. "God did it" doesn't fill that gap. It's actually kind of a shitty explanation.

    • @Shawn17WiFi
      @Shawn17WiFi 10 років тому +7

      Gongasoso "Kind of shitty"? More like totally unverifiable and full of shit!
      Let me draw you a reference of how stupid this is.
      Lets say your pet dog suddenly vanished one morning, 2 police officers came and both had their own hypothesis of what happened.
      First one said "I think your dog was stolen from your yard sir".
      Second one says "I think a cloud came alive and flew down from the sky picked up your dog, and ate him"
      Which makes more sense? Lol not even a question at all.

    • @PirateDion
      @PirateDion 10 років тому +2

      Gongasoso It can be proven, the problem is creationists look at the evidence and say "Well we weren't there to know for sure that dogs came from wolves." They fail to realize that you don't have to physically be at the exact moment of when there was significant change amongst a species to declare it being another before you can actually do so.
      This thing called genealogy realllllly fucking confuses creationists. Especially when we go about saying things like, "we don't even need a fossil record to know that evolution is true."
      That and they don't understand that micro evolution and macro are both evolution just at different time scales. If we can show microscopic life changing and developing new traits to adapt to an environment this is evidence of evolution happening.
      And we can even do this with other creatures. The chiclids in Africa are a great example. They surveyed the isolated lake of the various species of chiclids 50+ years ago, and upon doing another survey we are seeing variations emerge in large populations that were not there before. This rapid evolution is because there are a lot of species in an closed off area. Lots of pressure to change and adapt in order to survive.

I also don't understand that if we evolve why don't other animals? Not to mention the first person to meet 'God' suffered severe head trauma *right* before it happened. That book is pure *gold*! I love it! The book of mass slaughter, rape, theft, gay burning, adultery, murder, perversion. Oh, it's beautiful! And it's much easier for me to believe because it doesn't need to have any factual value! Instead we use this word, 'faith' which basically means that we believe it word for word just because! We don't actually need to understand anything! it's awesome. You should try it, and help us ram it down children's throat to corrupt them with the word, 'GOD' before they can make up their own mind."

    Are humans smarter or is the baseline that we are born into higher? Would a baby brought to present day from 5,000 years ago have a harder time with technology than a baby born now?
    I find this unlikely. It seems like we are mistaking the standing on the shoulders of giants with some kind of innate genius.
    Basically someone has an epiphany, we make a new discovery, and the baseline for society rises. The next generation isn't "smarter", that is to say, they aren't inherently better at learning and understanding than the generation prior. At least that's been my view of the topic.

      _my point is that almost 1/3 of caucasian europeans aren't white. they're tanned/light brown. greeks for example aren't white. saying white europeans excludes almost 33% of europeans_
      Ok then, seeing as how only albinos are white, I'd like to see where you are getting your data that 66% of Europeans are albinos.
      _if that's not racist_
      You're nitpicking over minor variations in skin tone, and saying that those variations aren't white because they're tanned or light brown. Meanwhile, only albinos are white. You're drawing lines in the sand that not even members of Stormfront, the KKK, or other racist organizations will draw.
      _White is not a fucking race.._
      Technically, there's no such thing as race. You see, the concept of race as we know it started with a man by the name of François Bernier and his book _Nouvelle division de la terre par les différentes espèces ou races l'habitant._ In the time period that he wrote this book, the word race was used synonymously with the word species. In fact, the term "race" didn't even come to be distinct from "species" until well after Darwin's time, because even he used the term "race" to refer to what we now call "species".
      So, we now know that the "races" are not in fact different species. Ergo, there are no races. People who draw lines in the sand between human beings and say "you're on that side becaise you're that race, and I'm on this side because I'm this race" are not just racists, but science denialists. This includes most SJWs, most political conservatives, and you.

      INTJ-Skorpyo7 _albinism is a disease_
      No, it's a mutation. You know what else is a mutation? Blue eyes, blonde hair, etc.
      _Albinos were long-skulled (or dolichocephalic), tall in stature, and possessed pale hair, eyes and skin.
      Mediterraneans were long-skulled (or dolichocephalic), short/medium in stature, and possessed dark hair, eyes and skin.
      While Alpines were round-skulled (or brachycephalic), stocky in stature, and possessed intermediate hair, eye and skin color._
      Uh... Albinos don't have pale hair, eyes, and skin. They have unpigmented hair, unpigmented eyes, and unpigmented skin.
      Furthermore, there is nothing about albinism that requires a specific skeletal structure.
      _But now all these 3 races are considered caucasian._
      Oh so albinos are a race now. You just finished saying that it's a disease. Which is it?
      _But now all these 3 races are considered caucasian.. which is why even the indians and aboriginal australians are considered caucasians._
      Blah blah blah. Tell me something. When you're sucking off François Bernier and Johann Friedrich Blumenbach,
      for collectively creating the modern concept of race, do you cup their balls?
      _Only about 33% of europeans are descendants of the albinos_
      The fuck are you talking about? Are you SERIOUSLY confusing Neanderthals with albinos? Albinos are people with the condition of albinism, which is the congenital lack of pigmentation.
      _So, I find extremely retarded on the people who say whites instead of caucasians because it's clearly not the same thing._
      Yeah because being white has nothing to do with being caucasian. Since you're complaining about congenital abundance of pigmentation, the only way to actually be white is to ban albino, and there are albino Africans.
      BTW the opposite of albinism is complete melanism. Though while albinism strikes people of all races, I am unable to find any reports of complete melanism in non-black races. It would be really neat if I could find such a person though.

    • @BerryTheBnnuy

      INTJ-Skorpyo7
      There are three "races" there (none of which fit the modern classifi. Those are Nordic, Alpine, and Mediterranean.
      Alpine is not the same thing as Albino. Albino is a term that originated in the early 18th century from the Portuguese and Spanish word "albo" which in turn comes from the Latin albus and the suffix -ino. Meanwhile, Alpine comes from the Latin word "alpinus" which refers to the Alps.
      However earlier you mentioned "Albinos, Mediterraneans, and Alpines".
      From this I can surmise one of two possibilities. Either you are conflating Alpine (from the Latin Alpinus) with Albino (from the Latin Albus), or you are renaming "Nordic" to "Albino" in order to sew confusion.
      At least in the English language, at no point has the word "albino" ever been applied to the Nordics or the Norse, unless one was born with albinism obviously.
      What's more, the Nordic race was not white. Albinos are white, Nordics were pink.
      Seriously, quit changing the subject and deliberately misinterpretting what's being said here.
      Oh and the word "albino" originated in the early 18th century, from Portuguese and Spanish "albo" (from Latin albus) with the suffix -ino, referring to... people with albinism... Again, at no point has "albino" (in English anyway) ever referred to anything but people or animals with albinism.

A heightened state of alertness along with greater strength, endurance, and reaction time is 100% useful to help cope with any situation, from being attacked by a murderer to tripping and falling. It's our body's way of preparing us for a demanding situation. Plus, synthetic epinephrine is used to help individuals with things such as food allergies or other conditions that affect the circulatory and/or respiratory system. (Hopefully we would have a cure for those by the time we would hypothetically lose our fight-or-flight system, but I digress.)

      fellowservant34 Well considering we share 96% of our DNA with the Chimpanzee... that's more than what rats and mice have in common, genetically speaking. that means we had a common ancestor and evolved from it into what we are today.
      Besides, look at bacteria. They are evolving in front of our eyes, whether it be entirely new strains or known bacteria developing resistance to antibiotics that once worked but were overused (especially by means of being unecessarily given to farm animals as a peventative measure).

Do you see why your race question is irrelevant?

    From what I know (though I can't pinpoint a source at this time), there is another huge difference between us and our ancient ancestors: roughly 3000 - 5000 years ago, most people were... shorter a.k.a. the average height of a human was about 5 feet, which is significantly less that it is today. Maybe because shorter people need less food and therefore are more likely to survive...

    One example of us constantly evolving is that we're actually a couple inches taller (in America) then our forefathers back in Europe. When America was first colonized amazingly, people lived longer, stronger and healthier lives. Also were a couple inches taller. Now this is observable of skeletons from 200-400 years ago if I do my math right. (I don't want to do the math at the moment) Comparing a modern skeleton to an skeleton from a couple hundred centuries ago I've noticed a remarkable difference. Evolution is a beautiful thing.

      LiquidTang Yes and no. We have developed quite a bit differently than humans of the past due to our insistence on sitting around so much. The curvature of our spine, our eyesight degrading, etc. While height could be directly related to better nutrition, this would still be a form of adaptation to environment, albeit human altered environment.
