The 49er game was the last game my brother and I "watched" together while on the phone. He died on 11/01/2001. The next week against the Browns felt like a miracle. As a fan, Bears have sucked the majority of my lifetime but this was an exciting time....and a sad time. I'll never forget Mike Brown. One of my favorite all time Bears..
RIP to your brother. The memories can never be taken away. I had season tickets and witnessed both these games with people who were like my wnd set of grandparents. But who passed away in 2008 and 2009 respectively.
This video gives me chills. That season is one of the reasons why I'm a Bears fan still to this day. That season, those games, will live in infamy in my mind.
i was at that 49ers game. was then only one of my friends that had hope and after mb scored that stadium was electric. amazing feeling. surprisingly all the bears game i went to in my teens won against randy moss with peanut and against greenbay
Those guys had better careers you're correct but mike brown was better. Would have had a better career but injuries ruined him right as he hit his prime. He was awesome
Just happened to be my first two Bears games I ever watched. I was 5 years old for both games, a few days off of 6 and remember them vividly because you don't forget momentous moments in your life like these were. As insignificant as sports seem sometimes, these games turned a little kid into a diehard Bears fan. I could only wish that the Bears would have a moment like one of these again.
Younger Bears fans and non-Bears fans will never understand what type of legend Mike Brown was. He played with more heart and more soul than any player I've ever seen play for the Bears, and he was ALWAYS in the right place at the right time. I will forever believe that had he stayed healthy the Bears win the Super Bowl in '06. Manning made some huge plays in the secondary that game that don't happen if Mike Brown is back there.
easily. i feel the same could be said about neal anderson, probably the most underrated rb of the super bowl era. i bet if anybody actually reads this post, at least half of them will be like, "oh yeah i forgot about that guy" or wont know who he is at all

The 2001 Bears came out of nowhere to win the old NFC central and go 13-3. Just like every other time Chicago has been a contender, the ‘01 Bears were only concerned about keeping the other teams off the scoreboard. They gave up a league low 12.7 points per game and surrendered just 5 rushing touchdowns all season. They gained fewer yards than their opponent in 8/13 victories. They sacked opposing quarterbacks 48 times, which comes out to three sacks per game. They had eleven different players record at least 50 tackles. They also only allowed 300+ passing yards once all year. They recorded two shutouts. They also prevented 5 teams from scoring an offensive touchdown and gave up only one TD in four other games. The Vikings and Lions only combined to score 26 points over the four games against Chicago that season.
I was living in Chicagoland then when I was married. I had to work all weekend cause I had classes on 2 weekdays. When you're driving thru downtown and goin thru the parking garages it often times drowns out the radio stations w/ static so I had no idea what was going on in the 49ers game. I found a spot finally in the garage I usually parked in and as I pulled in the station became clear just as Garcia got the ball to throw to Owens. Needless to say I was gobsmacked when Brown took it in. Great memory.
Hester was garbage on defense. Drafted as a DB but couldn't cover which is why they eventually switched him to wideout where he was also garbage. His one truly great talent was returning kicks which he was exceptional at.
and the beef pile up the middle with ted Washington and keith traylor. them clogging up the middle with urlachers sideline to sideline speed. nathan vasher was good for a couple years there too. and warrick holdman
These two games solidified my Bears fandom as an 11-year-old. Still remember them like they were yesterday. Great to see Jeff Dickerson and Moon Mullin here, too. RIP to both of them.
Me too! That place went crazy!! Remember when ppl were leaving early bc they thought the bears were going to lose? Then they started their comeback and security wouldn't let those ppl that left back in? Ha ha! I remember the crowd start chanting " brown like 💩, brown like 💩!" So awesome! We were high fiving anybody w bears gear on and laughing at anyone with browns gear on!! That was a season to remember!
Owens definitely had alligator arms on that one. Saw Urlacher coming out of his eyes. If he would have caught it, I think the hit would've been more violent.
The way it happened if Owens hadn't pulled up he would have caught that ball and then gotten blasted by Urlacher. He knew that in the moment and so when he saw it he pulled up and that caused him to short arm the ball thus giving Brown the chance to catch it and work his magic.
One of my first Cleveland heartbreak moments I experienced with my dad. We still talk about this game to this very day and we've had plenty of heartbreaking Cleveland moments since then.
can you imagine if Mike Brown's career hadn't been cut short by injuries? We may very well have won the '06 Super Bowl if Mike was on the field that day. Damn shame
I was there with my brother, dad, and my dads cousin who was in from San francisco and was a huge niners fan. I always hated the 49ers because one of my earliest chicago bears memories was getting smoked by San francisco at soldier field in the 1988 NFC championship game in January of 1989. The drubbing occurred in 5 degree weather forever ending the myth of “bear weather.” So I will never get tired of seeing Mike Brown take it to the house in week 6 of 2001 against SF.
2001 was the end of an era- final year with 3 divisions per conference, last year of the AFC/NFC Central Divisions, last year of the 4-5 Wild Card game being the best non-division winners instead of the worst division winner, last year of 3 WC's per conference, no more all-Wild Card games, last year with the conference title games ending before primetime, and the last year of Summerall/Madden.
Man that takes me back. Mike Brown legitimately might've been a top 10 all time safety if he could've stayed healthy. I still maintain that if Mike Brown played in the Superbowl in '06 Chicago would've brought home the Lombardi. He was that big of a difference maker when he was on the field.
Mike Brown was a great player just those needs was just chilling him in the game and knee surgeries knee surgeries knee surgeries but a great safety for the Chicago Bears
I was 4 years old when this happened and I remember both them. My dad went into the other room with 2 minutes left against Cleveland and I come running in yelling the Bears win the Bears win! He couldn’t believe this. Between this and the Bears are who we thought they are game, the Bears found the weirdest ways to win games when I was a kid. Now I’m an adult and it’s the opposite. They find the strangest ways to lose
Me my father and my uncle were at that Browns game and we LEFT EARLY because my dad said there’s no way they’re coming back from that deficit.. 😤 that was the only Bears game I’ve been to in my life!
So sorry to hear that! I was at that game also but insisted on staying. I heard that the ppl that left early were trying to get back in when they heard of the comeback but security wouldn't let them back in. Sorry if you were with that crowd but that was one of the craziest comebacks I have ever witnessed! Wow!
Mike Brown was a great player. He and Tommie Harris being out for the Super Bowl vs the Colts probably cost them that game. The Bears shut down Peyton Manning but without Brown and Harris on the field the Colts ran the ball right up the middle and it worked to perfection.
J. A. Greene damn right the Eagles. It was extremely painful for me because i'm a Bears fan but I live near Philly. that game wasn't even close, however the Bears miracle 2001 season was mostly lucky, plus they were starting to groom a young effective D.
Yeah definitely best safety not only great in pass coverage but also would come down in the box and deliver deadly hits but that was also what unfortunately shortened his career...Bears used him the same way the Colts used Bob Sanders because Dungy and Lovie came from the same coaching tree, sadly another safety with a short good career💯
I hate how a lot of these NFL Films/Network journalist and previous players get on our bandwagon and start talking like they all of the sudden got love for us.
Only player in NFL history to intercept a pass and score a game winning touchdown in back to back overtime games Mike Brown Chicago Bears 🐻 Strong Safety 1st round draft pick by The bears 🐻 out of Nebraska in 2001
Glory days of the post 85 Bears. Urlacher, Briggs, Brown, Tillman, Gould, Jones, Hester. If only they ever could have solidified a decent QB. It is just a cursed position for them. Like the Dark Arts position in Harry Potter.
Eddie Jackson's dope no doubt, but hes caught up on da bs/social media hype...not saying mike Brown woulda been on da same sht but yea lol...2018 doesn't define you; still have a lotta ball left in u...
If Mike Brown and Tommy Harris were healthy and on the field for the Super Bowl against the Colts. Rex Grossman may be walking around with Super Bowl ring right now.
2 other plays that stand out for me by Mike Brown. But it's been so long I hope I'm not misremembering them; I've haven't seen them on highlights. I think that same 2001 season, a pulling guard or tackle is out in front of his RB. He's got Mike Brown dead to rights... and Brown just decleats him. (Maybe the bengals game?) I think the run actually gained good yardage, but damn that was a hit. The second was that forgettable Aaron Rogers coming out game back in 2008 I think, Ryan Grant goes off tackle is out in the open field and Brown smokes him. Mike was running full speed to the exact spot he knew Grant was gonna cut. Just crazy for me to think Grant is in the open field and he never saw it coming. Ok, 3 plays. That 3 step sack on Farve that he also never saw coming :P
Both plays were lucky right place right time plays too. Lol. TO couldn't hold on to the ball it goes up in the air and he makes a catch and seals it, then they deflect a pass it bounced in the air and he's in the right place at the right time to grab it and take it back to the house.
The thing is that if the Bears had lost these two games they probably would have been better off matchup wise in the playoffs and made a run to at least the conference championship game. Instead they ended up facing the Eagles off the biweek and it was just a bad matchup.

Gary Fencik, Doug Plank. Mike Brown was very good but could not stay healthy.

Yeah but Rex Grossman was their qb that year, the ULTIMATE definition of an inconsistent qb that season
We would’ve won the 06 bowl had we just played Kyle Orton instead of Rex grossman bum ass
I think if Mike Brown would've stayed healthy he could've easily been a hall-of-fame type safety that dude was that damn good.

Let's not ignore the fact that Urlacher demolished Owens in the first one.
