Hi! My daughter is currently a pre-med junior majoring in Integrative Neuroscience. She’s currently anxious about what courses she needs to take for the MCAT and medical school because online sources and various advisors at her school are telling her different things. She was wondering if she needed to take Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Anatomy, and Physiology. People are saying cell and molecular are going to be on the MCAT while others say it’s not required. They also said that medical schools love when students take physiology and anatomy, essentially boosting their application. Since she’s not a traditional biology major these courses would count as electives on top of her already required major and minor courses. Any help would be appreciated, thank you so much!
Hi thanks for watching and for your question! Good luck to your daughter on her journey to becoming a doctor. For the MCAT, cell bio, molecular bio, anatomy, and physiology are not required to be able to score well. According to the AAMC website, the required prerequisite courses are introductory biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, and first-semester psychology, sociology, and biochemistry. I also don’t believe taking these classes would boost her application. HOWEVER, if she has the time and ability to take them without sacrificing her grades in other courses, they would be helpful for doing well in first year of medical school! Hope this answers your question 🫶🏼
