The classic horror brawler comes to the Arcade Archives. Originally released by Namco in November of 1988 in Japan and in North America in February of 1989, albeit under limited quantities (it has been told that Namco provided their US licensor, Atari Games, 100 kits because Namco knew that the game would be banished from American arcades due to its graphic violence and disturbing imagery such as a boss battle with an inverted crucifix surrounded by severed heads), Splatterhouse is a horror themed side scrolling brawler which pays homage to countless American horror films such as Friday the 13th and Poltergeist and Evil Dead, as well as some Japanese horror films. Players assume the role of Rick Taylor, who is a parapsychology student who went with his girlfriend, Jennifer Willis, to the mansion of the infamous Dr. Herbert West. Suddenly, things go horribly wrong when Jennifer is abducted and Rick is knocked unconscious and left for dead. When Rick regains consciousness, he finds himself wearing an ancient relic known as the Terror Mask which grants Rick the strength and willpower to fight the monstrosities that riddle the mansion and rescue Jennifer.
@alexk8792 I have heard many stories about it, but I do know many operators and distributors were worried that it was too violent at the time. The other issue, of course, is the inverted crucifix which would've been the subject of ire amongst most places including the Bible belt region of the US.
I don't know what's crazier: Splatterhouse getting a new release or the fact that SPLATTERHOUSE is rated T?! Either way, this was a nice early BDay present, loved this series when I discovered it in highschool
Considering the times, it is actually tame in comparison to its 2010 remake which is much bloodier and full of strong vulgar language, whose bulk of it comes from the Terror Mask itself which is voiced by Jim Cummings (BTW, even though he acknowledges his role in the game, he's admitted that it is one of his least favorite roles given that it's a stark contrast to his usual forte of playing family-friendly characters such as Pete in the Mickey Mouse universe and especially Tigger and Winnie the Pooh).
Been waiting for this one for years. Always loved Splatterhouse 2 on the Megadrive back in the day and since then ive always wanted to play through the original and now i can! Honestly about time a really good Namco game is rereleased. I would love to see some more Irem games on the Arcade Archives its been a while since the last Irem Arcade game (X multiply) was released. Dragon Breed, Gunforce 2,Ninja Baseball Batman and defiantly the awesome R type Leo all deserve rereleases.
Not gonna happen. As Bruno mentioned, the sequels which were developed by Now Productions (a.k.a. NowPro) were exclusive to the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive console
Hamster Corporations only ports Arcade games for now. If you want Splatterhouse 2 and 3, the cheapest alternative i could think of is to get the PS3 or Xbox 360 version of Splatterhouse remake if you have any of those systems. In the game you can unlock all 3 Splatterhouse games when you progress through the game at a certain point. The Playstation 3 version of Splatterhouse 1 run a at a lower resolution then the arcade version, other then that its pretty accurate port. Hamster Corporation port is most likely gonna be a more accurate port. Splatterhouse 2 and 3 for the PS3 is really accurate port of the Genesis version. I never played the 360 versions so i can`t say how those ports are.
@@PPHDocumentaries I have the remake for the Xbox 360, and while the ports stay true to their Genesis originals, the only noticeable tweak is in Splatterhouse 3 which has slightly altered cutscenes which is due to the fact that the original game had cutscenes with digitized actors.
WE'RE GONNA BE TALKING ABOUT THE *insert coin*! WE'LL BE TALKING ABOUT THE *cleaver behead*! DO YOU THAT'S FUNNY, VIEWER? DO YOU FIND IT AMUSING THAT WE'LL BE TALKING ABOUT THE *necromancer*! YES! WE'RE ALSO GONNA BE TALKING ABOUT *possessed knife*! *water enemy hit*! THE *biggy man chainsaw*! THE *hell chaos roar*! AND... AND WE WILL DEFINITELY BE SPENDING A LOT OF TIME TALKING ABOUT *jennifer scream*!
Despite the game being 35 years old, it still stands the test of time in the shock factor which at the time was controversial due to its graphic violence and gore which predates games like Mortal Kombat.
This is exactly what I wanted to be on Arcade Archives! This is JUST what I wanted to play. Thank you, Hamster!

That part about the 100 kits distributed by Atari Games in North America, is that true?

The BOR versions are better. Just saying.
The what?
@AlanEdgeHead BOR = Beats of Rage. It's a PC application which makes custom made side scrolling brawlers.
That's not even a "version", its a fangame that plays completely different. 🙄
