Yeah, I don't like screens that flop around for an unnecessary "worn out feel" when it's brand new. I want it to stay put and would never complain if I had to either use both hands or support the bottom part with another finger when opening.

  • @vvvios

I totally understand now why Acer was clearancing the old 2021 version of the Acer Spin 513. From what I've gathered, the new one has: a much stronger CPU, backlit keyboard, darker better titanium color (the 2021 Acer Spin looks and feels so cheap), 3:2 instead of 16:9, higher resolution and brightness, and better sound apparently - "Equipped with DTS® Audio, this Chromebook allows you to enjoy higher quality audio, distortion-free sounds, and deeper bass from the dual speakers."
The interesting part is the price hike - a price increase is definitely understandable since it's such an upgrade, but $615.99 MSRP buts it in the higher-end. I remember the 2021 version launched at $399 and basically immediately went to $349 sale price. I just bought a refurb Acer Spin 513 off eBay for $180 and love it, but those upgrades do make me jealous lol. I still don't know why mine didn't have a backlit keyboard, apparently the review models of the 2021 version did sometimes have backlighting. Great device though, I love it, even though it's got that blueish tint like you mentioned.

I concur with Chris about the fan noise on the 11th gen 713. It is atrocious and frankly unacceptable. I'm surprised Chrome Unboxed hasn't run a piece on it by now as it effected multiple 11th gen chromebooks. Fan less is definitely the way to go. Fan less and 3:2 screen even better!

I'm on 400+ Battery Cycles on my Pixelbook Go and I somehow broke the webcam on it so no zoom calls on my PBG, So this new Acer Chromebook Spin 513 might be the upgrade I was waiting for. I was tempted to get the Spin 713 i5-11th gen last year but I heard of users reporting issues of the fan being loud and randomly spinning on while doing basic/light tasks. I got too used to fanless laptops/chromebooks that I don't see myself going back to a chromebook with a fan even if its the most powerful laptop on the market.

Imagine having that on your lap in a moving vehicle: it either closes on you or you have to support it from the back. What got me into Chrome Books was that they were inexpensive, and if stolen, all the info was in the Cloud, and so you were only out a few hundred bucks without losing critical information. Coming in at $615, you're approaching $1K! That may mean not being able to toss it in baggage anymore. Maybe I'll get this one AND a "kiddie" HP, too, the HP for travel, and the Acer for around the house and area events. Also UFS is full-duplex, meaning it can transmit and receive data simulataneously, where as eMMC is half duplex and can only do one or the other. This has a significant and noticable impact on multitasking.

lol you are technically right. I needed more flexibility (in terms of software) so i moved from my Chromebook to the M1 MacBook Air. I basically downloaded chrome and installed all the google apps as either PWA or standalone windows in the dock. After syncing google drive into the file system I was pretty much back in a gear. That being said though, if linux app compatibility got a lot better I would go back to Chrome OS.

Disappointing Octane; The 11th Gen Pentium (7505U in devices $419 and under without any discounts) performs in the 45,000 range. This better have over 11.5 hours REAL use at 75% brightness, great standby battery and output 4K60Hz maximum per USB-C, and dual 2560 x1440 at 60Hz if you run two extended displays alongside the internal display to be worth the $600 price tag, especially since it's also NON-SERVICE eMMc.
