Hello Leon, did you know Jake was from San Diego? My sister dated a singer in a band he was in all those years ago. He also replaced my then guitar teacher in band called Child. How is that for useless rock trivia? Anyway, the solo to Playing God is just wicked good Leon. I love these "How not to" videos. Just don't do any "How not to" Ragdoll ...... we want the straight stuff there brother!!
Hey Leon. HoosierDaddy here on wife’s phone. Great videos these how not to play. Of course before YT and such, one Just played the songs / covers as best you could, especially if like me you only do so by ear. Then later I find out I was playing a bunch of songs the hard way. Same notes, but different spot on the neck and usually the hard way, or I had to compromise and mix two guitar parts on the original recording and try to make it sound at least familiar with just me playing in some instances. I also just like you absolutely love doing it my way but keeping the integrity of the song, otherwise it bores me to learn every song note for note. I’m sure you understand. Like you’ve mentioned guitar playing is supposed to be fun.. Love these videos sir. Be good my friend..
Jake is a bad ass. Really enjoy watching interviews with him on UA-cam. Didn't hurt that he hung out/lived with Warren DeMartini and they continuously pushed each other.
I love these "How NOT to Play" videos you've done! They're awesome for those of us who want to be able to bust out a fun riff with our friends, but aren't too concerned with playing it the "right" way. I think you could make an entire channel just focused on this kind of thing. I'd sub to that, for sure. Thanks for putting these online!
Your approach is 1000000% rock and roll and is the essence of great guitar playing, which is feel. Thank you, you’re doing what other guitar teachers should do. Tell us how “not” to play songs. Which in layman’s terms means, play the song easy and efficient and enjoy the energy and feel of the track rather than being a fretboard professor. I’ve been a guitar player for 15 years, this is perfect, thank you!
Hey, i love your how not to play series, ive been trying to learn bark at the moon for awhile the hard way and after watching you simplify it your way it really helped me out. Keep up the fantastic videos.
AWESOME LESSON !!! Your way is soooooo much easier than how it's actually played and sounds just as good. Please keep doing videos/lessons like this. My list of the best guitarists that Ozzy has recorded with: 1. Tony Iommi. He's not the fastest or flashiest but there's no doubt that Iommi has come up with the best and most sickest riffs of all time. He's the Master. 2. Randy Rhodes. 3. Jake E. Lee 4. Zakk Wylde 5. Gus G. 6. Jerry Cantrell Nothing against Jerry he's one of my favorite guitarist, his playing style isn't a good match for Ozzy's solo career style of music.
I learned this song as a young kid. Like you I relearned it because our singer wanted to play it. I was surprised how wrong I was. I didn’t have UA-cam or tabs just a cassette with a rewind button and lots of patience. Jake was always my favorite Ozzy guitarist.
Uncle Ben knows his stuff for sure. I’ve learned a good bit from him my self. I’m sure I’ll learn a bit from you as well. I just found your channel. There’s always something cool to learn. That’s why I started watching UA-cam in the first place.
i play exactly the same way you do lol , Jake is a freak and i love him for it , definitely my fav guitar player ozzy ever had , to me he has the best and most creative licks and melodic approach overall. great video as usual
Hello! Your great Leon. I was looking at Ben's video about this riff, and my thoughts of it is the same. I tried to play like the original but I gave up, way to wide stretch for my short fingers. Not a single tab on internet shows that weird way to play it like the original😀
I love these video’s, I’m 59 ,so I started learning stuff from a record player on 16 to slow it down ,your right ,so many ways to play different things , you don’t have to play everything exactly .as long as it’s in the right timing.sometimes it’s cool to find out ,oh that’s the way it goes. But to be honest , I’m a bit lazy. On the other hand sometimes you have to play it the right way , check out the first 2 chords in Mr sandman , my hands are not huge so I have to position the neck so I can get those stretches .Thank Leon for the great input 😜
That's almost how Gus G plays it. That whole Jake E Lee guitar Clinic video taught me how to resolve notes better because I never really thought how to resolve notes. I almost have the song practice enough at speed. I have a nice ax8 tone for Jake E Lee exactly for that song.
“Love of my Life” by the awesome Swedish band Arctic Rain is very close to the Bark at the moon riff. It’s an awesome song. Arctic Rain=Dokken meets Boston. My fave rock album of the year! Sweden is keeping the 80’s sound alive!!
I’m not trying to do an ad for Arctic Rain, I just love them because they inspire me. It started with Ghost, then UA-cam recommended Eclipse and Perfect Plan and W.E.T. And Captain Blackbeard and tons of others. Finally, I found some modern bands that make me want to pick up the guitar every time I hear them. Night flight orchestra also made me wonder where have these bands been my whole adult life. I’m like a kid again! Moving to Sweden!! Lol
I saw the same Jake video showing how he plays it and I was like whoa! 🤯 what the heck is he doing I had no idea. I was doing it more like you. Great video, I like it! 👊🤘
You are me. Great stuff man. Got to play Bark and Dio's stuff with Appice's Drum Wars. PS. I had to do it like Jake. Balls. Cheers brother, keep posting!
I've always been a stickler for playing cover tunes the right way. But sometimes you just can't, weather I can't physically or can't figure it out. Especially being over 50 now and not playing for a while there's just stuff I can't do anymore. The second half of the first solo in BATM is an example. No matter what , I can't get it to sound right :(
Same here. I always try to learn things right, but my 50+ hands don't always want to cooperate. Only started playing again 3 years ago after about a 25 year lull. So getting them back up to speed is a chore.
Well, if this doesn't work and you can't do the stretches, can I recommend a 3/4 scale guitar? I think there are parts of a song necessary, but make it your own.
You know, I actually thought that Bark at the Moon was Randy for the longest time. Then I looked it up and became sad cuz I also thought Randy was still around but he wasn't. Amazing album.
Screams break the silence Composing from the dead of night Counterpoint is boiling He's returned to score the light Then when he's found chords he's looking for Listen in awe and you'll hear him Bach at the moon
Awesome brother!! These shred runs really get to me sometimes I've been a rhythm player about all my life and now im just starting to try to understand lead and shredding and its seems it gets more complicated as i try to figure it out!! Lol really enjoy your channel and keep on rocking these great songs brother!! I might get the hang of it by the time im 80 or 90!! Haha 🤠👍🤘🎸🤘🍻🍺🍻
“The Ultimate Sin” has been OOP for several years, unfortunately. Not the strongest release, but I think it has something to do with songwriting credits toward Phil Soussan. Oh, yeah... and it’s the one album where Jake actually get songwriting royalties. Convenient for Sharozzy to just nuke the thing off the face of the Earth.
Leon Todd Right. When I listened to the interview with him and Eddie Trunk, first thing I thought was how wrong I could be, thinking she/they couldn’t sink any lower than replacing drums and bass parts on two albums LOL!
@@LeonTodd Not to remove too much blame, but Ozzy was a complete f'n mess in the 80's, and honestly, I would say he likely didn't have the first clue who was being paid what at the time. I'd be surprised if he's all that conscious of it to this day. I put all that shit squarely on Sharon. Pretty sure she screwed every single person that's worked with the band at some point over the years, not to mention Black Sabbath and many bands beyond Ozzy's inner circle as well. I'm sort of amazed that Zakk keeps going back for more and has nothing but good things to say about her. So I guess his paycheck couldn't be all that bad.
Actually Jake had to sell his royalties for TUS shortly after, for peanuts, because he didn't want to deal with the Osbournes and go through attorneys for the rest of his life... So he doesn't get anything for either BATM or TUS, he should be a millionaire but he isn't... And Ozzy knew perfectly what business mastermind Sharon was doing to his musicians, addiction or not, he told Jake face to face that he screwed him for money and royalties... TUS is honestly my favorite Ozzy's record, and certainly the most advanced and brutal guitar's wise... And yes, once again there are songwriting issues with Phil Soussan too since he wrote Shot In The Dark, all the rest was done by Jake and lyrics by Bob Daisley...
Nicola Ferrari Yeah, I think the issues with TUS are more with Phil Soussan and particularly “Shot in the Dark,” which is why TUS and “Just Say ‘Ozzy’” are out-of-print. I’ve never bought the whole “lovable idiot” thing with Ozzy. He’s complicit with what Sharon has been doing, which makes him just as guilty.
