Our First Reactions To Super Mario RPG

- Last week, a remake of the 1996 classic Super Mario RPG was released. This has always been a very special game for Casen, who grew up playing it with his brothers. So, on release night, I invited him over to my place to reminisce and discuss how this remake stacks up to the original SNES version.

I have heard for many years that this game was one of the all-time greats. I never owned an SNES growing up, so I never played it. However, my wife had the game growing up, and it was one of her all-time favorites. Naturally, she wanted to introduce me to it. We're almost done the game, and my god is it great.
It's RPG mechanics boiled down to their most basic simplicity, and then refined to maximize your addiction. These mechanics hold up magnificently three decades later, alongside the music, the characters, the humor, the art direction, etc.
I've loved experiencing the game with her and I enjoyed experiencing it vicariously through you guys in this video. Like apoema42 in the comments, I really like this new production style. Keep up the good work!
Grandpa Casan in the far future: "And Mario used to throw a peace sign after every fight!"
Casan Jr.: "Alright Grandpa, let's get you to bed."
Casen's joy is so infectious.
I am not even a fan of Mario RPG, but I'd easily just watch Casen play the game and vicariously love it with him lol
Seconded!
I know right,it's insanely entertaining.
Casen's face of pure joy is priceless 😂😂
I loved the new production style, way to go guys.
It's awesome
production quality is ridiculous. Their cinematic skills coming through for sure.
Great editing, guys! Casen's passion for Super Mario RPG is infectious.
This is how a remake is done (Star Ocean remakes are also excellent examples). Unsure about in the states, but in Japan, the commercial also appeals to people who've played the original. They just need to give Mario, Mallow, and Peach their peace victories again.
I believe Miyamoto wanted Mario to drop the peace sign some few decades ago even (see the Lost Levels cover), as it gave Mario too much of a kid-like demeanor. The peace sign is something kids in Japan commonly do for pictures. I don't think it's universally seen that way to the rest of the world, though.
I absolutely love this format! You guys have such a great rapport, and it was really fun to see a more casual/candid type of video. I'd love to see more "Mike and Casen play an awesome game on a couch for an hour" episodes in future! I think it serves this type of content really well =D
This side by side couch format was so fun to watch! Loved seeing Casen get so excited about the game xD can we have more of this in the future?
Thanks, guys! Loved the format for this. Provides a unique perspective.
Die hard fan of SMRPG and Father here. I picked this game up for my son (6yo) after he demolished his report card with flying colors, hoping he'd find the same spark of enjoyment I got when I first played this game on release. I was weary, since he's mostly embraced action games like Sonic and Kirby, with little patience for games like Pokemon or text heavy RPGs in general.
He is having the time of his LIFE. And because of that, I'm re-living all of those same feelings I had as a kid doing the same. He laughs at the most RANDOM times, like when Toad pops back in after giving his tutorial to mention "one more thing" or when Croco jumps up shaking scared when you approach him from behind. He loves the colors, the music, and the simplistic RPG gameplay with the timed hits to make him feel really good about himself. He got choked up finding the Wishing Star from Mallow's parents just hoping he'd come home, broke my heart. He LOVES the new Triple Tech system, and he loves it even more cause I said I never got to use that when I was a kid. This game is beautiful, this new experience is beautiful, and I'm so unbelievably happy with how this whole thing turned out. It almost brings me to Mallow sized tears, and it definitely will when we get to the end and say Goodbye to Geno. 9.9/10 (-.1 for Peace sign of course).
I love that you guys are using CRT-filters for the footage of older games. I think it’s the best way to do them justice. Awesome video as well, love the editing.
This was really fun to see! Seeing the pure joy on Casen's face was worth the watch alone, even if I don't have nostalgia towards Super Mario RPG personally.
Looking forward to similar content if you guys have anything planned- just you enjoying a game and talking about it casually is a super nice change of pace!
I bought the remake and i think its great! Im not very far in it but it is very fun for someone who has never played the original. I love the humor, gameplay, and music of the game, im glad they still acknowledge these older snes games.
SMRPG was my first RPG and it was the last game me and my brothers all played. Our gaming roads split up when I wanted to continue playing nintendo games and they wanted to play everything on the PS1. It marked me so much that I became more of a squaresoft fan than a nintendo fan.
If me and my brothers got together to play this remake we'll probably get a few laughs out like you did. Great video. It's fun to see how many of our lives were very similar in the 90s
Casen's gaming memories of the old Mario RPG are infectious, and I didn't grow up with the game until some years ago. I hope Casen's kids enjoy the remake, and especially considering the old title can be somewhat hard/expensive to get.
Peace [see what I did there?]
Just watched the video! I’m generally more of a podcast guy (I love the concept of studying the thematic core of a game, hyperfocusing on it while playing it, and applying literary and existential analysis to it), but this video was so much fun to watch! Really loved how Casen spoke with so much passion about Super Mario RPG and I wouldn’t mind more videos in this style, which shocked me too.
Fantastic editing that really captures the nostalgia. Casen was having a great time and it shows! Awesome video, would love to see more in the future with a similar format.
Cool format, guys ! I’d really love to see you two talk about retro games on a couch on a regular basis 👍
Okay, this looks perfect. Two friends just talking about games on the couch. Love this! Great job guys :)
New format is fresh, always look forward to new videos!
We’re like the same age and Casen’s reaction is spot on with my own. Right in the feels
I remember they removed him doing the peace sign in the DS version of Mario 64 too so i guess it's just something they don't want him to do anymore?
That's exactly it. When they unified the "brand" of Mario, it was decided that his move was to tip his cap. Now, it's an internal rule.
It’s because the backwards peace sign is the equivalent of giving British people the middle finger
You should do clips like that more often. Awesome energy😊
Wow guys this video was awesome! The editing makes it super engaging to watch, nice balance of the game and focus on the two of you. I fee it helps build a connection with you guys but I’m still learning about the game. Would love to see more impressions video of new releases in this particular style.
Terrific way to review this experience!
This episode, concept and dynamic was REEEEEALLY fun!
I always thought the victory pose was V for victory. I picked that up somewhere as a kid and also used to do it all the time. People would be like, "Peace, man!" I would get annoyed and tell them it was a V for victory.
that makes sense, why would it be a peace sign after Mario just beat up some mobs? lol
but the V sign is just not very well known, nor is it mentioned anywhere in the game or manual, now if Mario did the V sign and said V is for Victory, then it would help bring that across for people who have no clue what he's doing, like myself
Us Brits never got this game back in the day, and I never had the Wii to buy the original on the e-shop. While I would have liked the original version be available too, because I'll always bang on about games preservation, I am looking forward to playing this. Should keep the Black Dog in his kennel for a while longer
Great vid! More like this sprinkled between your longer discussion ones would be nice to see.
Fantastic video guys, this really feels like further capturing the heart behind "Resonant Arc". I felt like I also went back into Casen's childhood, haha.
One thing that I was hoping that you guys would touch on was the removal of the subtitle, "Legend of the Seven Stars". How do you guys feel about dropping it and just calling the game "Super Mario RPG"?
I had a very similar experience with this game. I never owned it as a kid, but my girlfriend did and loves it to death. We both got it and played it on each of our switches and rolled credits within half an hour of each other. This game is a masterpiece, and I'm glad I finally played it.
Really cool to see you guys hang out in this casual way! Keep it up! 👍
At the time this came out, it was like a little stopgap before mario 64. This was the first time you could move mario in all directions and with the prerendered art style, it felt like a jump to 3d. Chrono trigger was also my favorite game at the time and mario rpg feels like a baby's first rpg like chrono trigger was.
I was glad the bazooka line was still in, but saddened when I got to the forest and found the Bruce Lee line removed. Really confused why the peace sign was removed as well.
Hope Casen really enjoys this
I do really appreciate that the original Woolsey script was retained. They removed the pop culture references (which is why I think Mack's name was changed, and possibly Frogfucius as well), and I noticed a couple NPCs that say slightly different things (such as the little girl toad who wants to become Mario's sidekick now rather than marry him), but it's 95% the same, which is great. Much of the charm of the game comes from the snappy and fun dialogue, and it would be an entirely different experience without it.
They also changed Yardovich to Speardovich, which while logical is a shame because lots of nostalgia tied to the name Yardovich.
Mike, I think I finally get it.
I did not play FF7 back in the day, but I did play SMRPG. I used to think you were too hard on FF7R, but after playing the new Super Mario RPG, I can't help but think about how incredible it would be to play an FF7 remaster like this, where it's the original vision, but with 2023 technology and design behind it -- actually modernizing the game for a new generation instead of making something that's (still awesome IMO, but) ultimately, a completely different game.
Both things have their place, but seeing the beautiful treatment SMRPG received, I now understand why it could be disappointing to just get the new thing without also giving the old thing the treatment and respect it deserves
I second this. I was quite disappointed with ff7 remake, but was so happy with another remake that got it right: link’s awakening. It’s so perfect, in my view; and now I can’t wait to try out smrpg, though I did not play the original.
I think this hits the nail on the head. if FF7 got a faithful remake in this style first, I don't think Mike or anyone else would have minded a seperate reimagining like the current series doing anything it wanted. There's a place for both, but because we got the re-imagining first we'll probably never get the faithful one anymore.
I love the point about playing these games with your kids. My toddlers have been glued to the TV whenever I have this game up. I read the dialogue and they see it like a storybook. It’s been really cool!
Super Mario RPG is like Final Fantasy Tactics no one seen it coming, thought it was going to play horribly but then shook the world by surprise.
100% this game last night. First time playing it. Loved it. They touch on so many archetypical themes and references with a touch of humour.
Good to know that this one holds up well to the original. Also, nice video format and editing!
Yeah, it's interesting how a faithful remake like this can be great to introduce to a younger audience but can still not beat out the original for die-hard fans (like how I personally still enjoy certain elements of the original better since it's also maybe my favorite game ever). Whereas, a Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a true full remake and re-imagining, lending reason to playing both FF7 and FF7 Remake for different reasons (both are awesome if you ask me).
you guys nailed this style of videos, mixing real time with voice over was an excellent idea!
Loved this video, the format worked really well.
Amazing episode! you guys just get better and better!
I grew up with the original and I completely understand that peace sign thing. It’s a small detail but it will be more noticeable than most would think. It’s like mega man 11, it is a good game but it always bothered me that mega man didn’t stay in his jumping animation when you jump through the boss doors. I remember fans seeing that for the first time and asking if capcom could do an update to allow it again because it’s something fans saw throughout the mega man games and X games.
I'll be curious to see what Casen thinks once he's finished the game and played the post game content. See if that does enough for him to want to replay this version or still the SNES version.
I just remember how jaw-dropping the graphics were. SMRPG on the SNES was so smooth- everything felt so modern and slick.
This was fun! Would definitely watch more of this format from ya'll.
My switch has been having problems but as soon as I get a new one I'm picking this up. So excited for this remake 😊
It's kind of scary how alike that was. Literally gave it a new coat of paint.
Same with my kid and Links Awakening. He would never have played it if not remade. Proud dad😢
Gotta agree with you, Mike- the original was one of my all time favorites and i think i like the remake just a bit more now.
I am going to start xenosaga and nier soon. Looking forward to playing it while watching your podcasts like I did with xenogears 😁
You both like gigachad nerds. This game is goated. Hard to believe we have a remake of this game. I really hope it sells well for sequel.
Great format ! Keep it up, thank you !
I love this approach of the video!!
I'm impressed they kept most of the script from the SNES version (Toad still has the bazooka at home!). Honestly, I'm impressed how they kept most of the original experience in the remake. They really paid close attention, although Mallow no longer calls Mario Bruce Lee. The remake uses most of the same camera angles, only switching to 3D to make scenes more clear, or when the player doesn't have control anyway (like most character introductions.)
RIP peace sign, a victim of a unified brand. I wish Mario at least spun before tipping his hat, but we get level up dances in exchange.
Love the format of this video!
I 100% agree with Nintendo's philosophy when it comes to remakes. A remake should maintain all of its core gameplay while implementing visual improvements and small quality of life changes. Basically, smoothing out the jagged areas of the original making it more accessible to a wider audience today. It should _not_ be rewriting the core gameplay or game scenarios. Sweeping gameplay changes to me signifies a disbelief in the quality of the original product.
I had a similar experience to Casen earlier this year. Metroid Prime, my favorite game, was remastered with very little changes outside of its visuals and controls. They didn't touch enemy AI or rework any of Samus' abilities. It shows the level of confidence Nintendo and Retro Studios had in the original release. Even though it's listed as a "remaster" I'd say it's the gold standard of what a remake should be. It plays and looks exactly like how I remember experiencing it for the first time. That is the highest amount of praise I could possibly give a remake
Nostalgia is a hell of a drug… 👀 I agree with Yoshinori Kitase’s take on remakes. Nostalgic to a point, then suddenly boring and predictable. I want new surprises, not to expect everything coming before it happens.
Good to see a new format
Your channel is the only one I'm waiting for the review with Super Mario RPG.❤❤❤
no peace sign😢
if you aren't playing this with a friend on a second controller to do the timing of the second attack...you are missing a huge part of what made this game so great.
every other friday growing up, I would go to my best friends house and he would rent a game and often we would just chill and i'd watch him play...
but legend of Gaia and Mario RPG both had a "little sister" function that would allow a second person to help out. in mario rpg the second player could get timed hits too
THAT WAS GOOD GAME DESIGN!
one person literally can't do as much damage as 2 in Mario RPG...
man remember when games wanted to bring you together...those were the days
This new style video is great
Loving the set up and production.
Maybe we can get a faithful FF9 remake after SMRPG's success... they are like cousins to me
great video, thanks for the awesome content
This was such a joy to watch, would definitely watch a let's play if you guys did it.
The SNES classic is back better than ever!
This was a huge game for me in my childhood. Played it more times than I can count. I'm so happy that they preserved and enhanced so much.
Guys. You should know that the creators of Mario HATED the peace sign and have moved away from it after 64 never to be seen again. So it’s no surprise that they left it out of this ground up remake.
super Mario rpg is one of my favorites. been obsessed with it since I got it in the 90s along with ff6 chrono trigger and earthbound. this remake is nearly flawless besides minor nitpicks. I actually prefer the Woolsey-ism. they will forever be Mack and Frogfucius. and Bruce Lee is canon.
great video. you guys have really elevated the quality and polish of the show yet the production value is still continuously increasing. awesome work fellas.
Say what you will about FF7R, Square has been doing a great job lately with remakes. While they weren't directly involved with this one, they did supervise it. And then we have the recent Star Ocean remake, and before that Tactics Ogre Reborn, Live a Live, Crisis Core, Trials of Mana..
God, I just hope we get a proper Vagrant Story remaster/remake!! If there is a game that would GENUINELY benefit from quality-of-life improvements while retaining its immaculate storytelling, writing, atmosphere, and uniqueness, it's Vagrant Story! Please, Square!!
This game needed a hard mode
Amazing game, and the remix soundtrack is fire! thanks for the video!! 🎉🎉
Nice video guys!
Just charming! Wonderful video!
What a great video Mike!
I see new material from you guys and I am more than happy
IIRC it was because of Miyamoto who didn't like Mario being portrayed as "childish" with the peace sign is why it's not in the remake or in games after Mario 64.
Characteristics like this have been omitted from the Mario franchise along with unique world building in games like Paper Mario, probably around the same time frame when Mario's aesthetic was streamlined.
Surprisingly enough with the advent of Mario RPG, Paper Mario Thousand Year Door getting remakes, this prior trend seems to be gradually going away, though not completely.
I really hope you guys play The Thousand Year Door remake when it releases.
OMG this game is a childhood core memory for me! Always loved this game!
The peace sign! That's what I couldn't figure out. I knew something wasn't right with the victory pose.
Really looking forward to playing this! I loved the original back in the day with really my only complaint being the level and inventory cap. Just gotta finish Tactics Ogre Reborn first which has taken months of my time. If anything I'm prioritizing Mario RPG next because I want to play a much shorter game.
I am very excited to be playing this for the first time; since I live in Europe, Super Mario RPG was never a mainstay of my childhood, and I missed out on the Wii and Wii U digital releases. Likewise, I am a bit of a geek for physical games, so now I can finally get the full experience I want, being a big fan of Square and Enix RPGs in general. Listening to Casen being so excited was infectious!
The story about cleaning the house is WAY too real. I absolutely tried that trick so many times too with my dad.
Great video, the game was a joy to play through and I hope they do more rpg games whether it's remakes/remasters like with the upcoming 1000 year door or something brand new with mario.
At roughly 20:20 you are talking about the platforming about. I remember having issues with that one in the original, but also had that issue in the new version. To be fair I think I got on the second one the same way in both the original and newer version.
Yes I think it is great that it was remade, if nothing else I now officially own it after 30 years since I never bought it as a kid.
Great format!
One thing I wish they did was try to replicate that clay effect on the models.
This is what i wanted from FF7 remake. Hopefully FF9 remake is in this style.
Looks like its Miyamoto's fault the peace sign is out, since mario 64 released he ordered the peace sign out because it seemed "too childish".
I’m currently playing the original and I really love the game, super Mario RPG is so great and I can’t wait to play the Remake for Christmas
This was awesome!
On the topic of great remake/remaster I think Diablo 2 resurrected is the best example since the original game runs underneath the new renders
Everyone's "Peace Sign" pose was removed. Mallow, and I think Bowser did it now and again. I've heard that the gesture is offensive in some cultures so, it was changed, otherwise the unification of Mario now just 'tipping his hat' being on brand wouldn't affect Mallow.
Oh this is a really nice video ❤
It's kind of funny that they changed Mario's victory pose this time. iirc, the original SNES version had a change made to Bowser's victory pose when they localized it for the US because his was possibly offensive. I looked into the reason for Mario's change and it seems that Nintendo just kinda got sick of Mario *always* doing it so they started removing the gesture from all of his games, not just this one.
lol something seems funny about how highly produced this is in comparison to what it is - a couple guys talking about a game they like. I dunno, it just kind feels less genuine somehow I can't really explain it. Love all your guys content and mario rpg was an awesome classic. I can still hum the boss battle theme to this day, 20 whatever years later.
