The symbolism of Sams face patterns in chases face at 1:14 say so much, It shows that chase is still himself yet there is something else on/with him. Controlling him and changing him. I dont know if my perspective is a stretch but thats what I think the patterns on chase's face mean.
You're not far off at all! While the pattern gets repeated for the child bit, making it a small shot at the beginning like that was a hint of there being something else going on with Chase (that being Sam's influence/voice.) I'm really glad you caught it!
I was planning to avoid The Smoke Room, then looked up who "Sam" was, and now realize he's the protagonist, and that these two aren't standalone, they're very, very connected

The way how this animation interpret the symbolism of each character's personality, experience and memories is really amazing. I love how you drew "Samuel" being inside of Sydney and how the incident affected them as kids. I love the idea you basically like summarized who they are or what happened to them in game. This song and the lyrics really captures the essence of the whole game itself. This is really great nonetheless and it proves on how you put a lot of effort, care and love to the game and the animation.
I love this so much, I just finished Leo's route today after taking a huge break because of how much TJ's route fucked me up and couldn't stop looking for Echo content. I can't believe you did their children design, you nailed it, and all the little hints of Sidney and Smoke room you put on the video. Jenna's markings having the wardrobe there, just fucking brilliant! Now I just need courage to play Jenna's route. PS: I hope to see Kudzu on your style someday!

I think I've watched this upwards to 100 times now since I finished Echo, and every single time by the time it gets to them as kids plugging their ears, I have to fight back tearing up. So well done, thank you for this.

I love all of this and the amount of detail in every frame is something else. There's something striking about Leo with the broken heart face. Maybe it's now angular most of the other markings are in contrast, but it sticks out, especially with how important that ends up being. It's almost like a mask. I also love the different facial reactions with their younger selves crying and how much of their personality was in each one. Of course TJ's would have that exaggeration. Everyone else has commented on the other things I could say, but brilliant work.

There was one for a heart, so I decided to adapt it properly to fit Leo. I figured a broken heart for him would make sense, haha And I'm glad to hear you caught the crying on the kids! @SaintBull Art I noticed that when watching the original. Is that where adult Jenna's eye marks come from? That's the only symbol I haven't been able to place. And I can tell how much you put in. I think the most exciting part having watched this a few more times, outside of the Chase/Sydney variations, is seeing the adults taking on both their adult and childhood symbols as Echo brings all of that to the surface. I also love that when most others are crying, Leo doesn't have any tears. He's frustrated more than anything, which is perfect for him. It's funny that Leo isn't my favorite character and yet I can't help but focus on him. I just finished Echo last week and I'm still impressed that Chase and Sam are used as almost decoys from Leo and Flynn. Flynn is probably my favorite when all is said and done. He's one of the kindest people when talking purely about actions, even though his words aren't. And I gotta say, your art made the flashbacks a delight.

I did take direct inspiration from the original Vocaloid video, but I figured having a design centered around her eyes would be fitting given she was the one that kept seeing "something" growing up. As for Leo, I figured I should try and reflect everyone's feelings after the -incident-. I feel like Leo was mostly angry at himself, wanting to keep everyone safe and protecting everyone. I hope Echo was a good read for ya!! And I hope this video is a good reminder of many of the iconic events for the game :] Again, thank you for your words! Just finished Echo and I found this, nice. Style seemed familiar, and when the kids part come, I understood lmao Impressive the kids' sprites became canon afterwards I really love this and the symbolism, congrats !
i can't believe i didn't praise this vid at all in my first comment lol ik you say in the desc. that you tried to make it work with 'only 6' characters but the use of shadow chase and sydney as respective '7th' and '8th' characters in key places really elevates this, it's a really clever way to maintain the beat being built around sets of 4 you absolutely nailed it, nothing feels like it's mistimed bc of the increased amount of characters echo brainrot is only Half the reason i come back to this vid; the other is that it's INSANELY well put together

There's so many things I've noticed throughout the vid here that I completely understand, and whenever I see Sam I can't help but feel like crying XD Despite that, there's so much symbolism behind everyone's face paints, the child versions of everyone, Sydney and Sam-- I could go on but I don't want to spoil anyone potentially new to the VN and give you a wall of text to go through. Great video! I adore the sprite work you've done and how it illustrates the emotions of this very screwed up yet memorable cast. Just for fun, I chose to write my own interpretation of what each face "mask" or "face paint" represented, starting with the adult sprites (with SPOILERS): Chase - a target, clearly meant to symbolize his role in the story and the mass hysteria that unravels after his return to Echo. Since Every character expresses interest of some sort in Chase, he's the main catalyst that causes Echo to unleash the years worth of built up anger and grief and psychologically torment its residents. Not to mention, Chase was the next target by the ghost of Samuel. Leo - a broken heart, a symbol of his clear attachment to Chase, the emotional grief he went through after their breakup and the fixation over Chase that lead to his downfall. TJ - the cross of St. Peter. clearly a connection to his Christian ideals and his insecurities. In the past, St. Paul swore to have his cross be hung upside down as a sign that he was unworthy of crucifixion in the same light as Jesus. In TJ's case, I guess this reflects his own feelings about himself as he covers up Chase's murderous acts and flees with him in the end with an unknown fate. Carl - tears and vomit, a visual representation of the isolation, anxiety and clinical depression he suffers from. Not a single route happens where he doesn't throw up in a panic attack. Flynn - the face of the wendigo that haunts Echo and a clear allusion to his connection with it. Jenna - open eyes. I guess this is a reference to what she goes through in her route, as she witnesses her friends get tortured and learns unfortunate truths about them, as well as how they're able to reconnect in spite of their flaws. She starts off as a judgemental bitch who lets her envy and grief cloud her reasoning from truth, but in the end, she's able to put he pain aside to open her eyes and slap sense back into Rachel through geniune empathy and connection. As for the child sprites: Chase - Samuel's facial hair. The moment he got involved in the death of you-know-who was the point in which Samuel's influence started to grow. Carl - a superhero mask, referencing the icons be looked up to as a spoiled rich child TJ - tears, representing not just TJ's whole role in the story but the bullying he got subjected to when Sydney was a part of the "friend group" Jenna - this one has many options to choose from. These wavy lines can either be a reference to Lake Emma, the window blinds of her home in which familial abuse ensued, the ending in which she floods the whole town, or even the radio waves in which her grandmother's ghost communicates. Leo - various injuries that illustrated his role as a the group's source of protection and his wreckless tendencies to beat up anyone who bullied or threatened them. It could also represent his oath to protect everyone after Syd's loss Flynn - either tire marks or dig marks which serve as a callback to the site in which Mr. Bronson bit the dust, or a claw mark that serves as another allusion to the wendigo Flynn's connected to.
Good eye on TJ's! I'm so glad someone else caught that, and especially wanting to point out how it overs his mouth in a way where he couldn't speak too, almost like tape. :3

i know it's like very late. i just discovered your work it's amazing. the song fits so perfectly. it's about trying to fill a memory that never existed and us, players, playing the game over and over again even though we know the other routes. only one true ending exists in chase's head. it's pretty neat.

okay so this animation actually lead my to finally play TSR, and gotta say all the Sam symbolism hits so much harder after playing through just a part of the full story
The amount of symbolism here is so amazing I can't stop rewatching it!!! Especially the marks on the faces relate so well to each character. The only 1 thing I'm confused about is Flynn at around 0:48, is that a fire poker?? Does it represent the end of his route??

There's so many things I've noticed throughout the vid here that I completely understand, and whenever I see Sam I can't help but feel like crying XD

Great video! I adore the sprite work you've done and how it illustrates the emotions of this very screwed up yet memorable cast. Just for fun, I chose to write my own interpretation of what each face "mask" or "face paint" represented, starting with the adult sprites (with SPOILERS):
Chase - a target, clearly meant to symbolize his role in the story and the mass hysteria that unravels after his return to Echo. Since Every character expresses interest of some sort in Chase, he's the main catalyst that causes Echo to unleash the years worth of built up anger and grief and psychologically torment its residents. Not to mention, Chase was the next target by the ghost of Samuel.
Leo - a broken heart, a symbol of his clear attachment to Chase, the emotional grief he went through after their breakup and the fixation over Chase that lead to his downfall.
TJ - the cross of St. Peter. clearly a connection to his Christian ideals and his insecurities. In the past, St. Paul swore to have his cross be hung upside down as a sign that he was unworthy of crucifixion in the same light as Jesus. In TJ's case, I guess this reflects his own feelings about himself as he covers up Chase's murderous acts and flees with him in the end with an unknown fate.
Carl - tears and vomit, a visual representation of the isolation, anxiety and clinical depression he suffers from. Not a single route happens where he doesn't throw up in a panic attack.
Flynn - the face of the wendigo that haunts Echo and a clear allusion to his connection with it.
Jenna - open eyes. I guess this is a reference to what she goes through in her route, as she witnesses her friends get tortured and learns unfortunate truths about them, as well as how they're able to reconnect in spite of their flaws. She starts off as a judgemental bitch who lets her envy and grief cloud her reasoning from truth, but in the end, she's able to put he pain aside to open her eyes and slap sense back into Rachel through geniune empathy and connection.
As for the child sprites:
Chase - Samuel's facial hair. The moment he got involved in the death of you-know-who was the point in which Samuel's influence started to grow.
Carl - a superhero mask, referencing the icons be looked up to as a spoiled rich child
TJ - tears, representing not just TJ's whole role in the story but the bullying he got subjected to when Sydney was a part of the "friend group"
Jenna - this one has many options to choose from. These wavy lines can either be a reference to Lake Emma, the window blinds of her home in which familial abuse ensued, the ending in which she floods the whole town, or even the radio waves in which her grandmother's ghost communicates.
Leo - various injuries that illustrated his role as a the group's source of protection and his wreckless tendencies to beat up anyone who bullied or threatened them. It could also represent his oath to protect everyone after Syd's loss
Flynn - either tire marks or dig marks which serve as a callback to the site in which Mr. Bronson bit the dust, or a claw mark that serves as another allusion to the wendigo Flynn's connected to.
