Anybody who wants to dramatically improve or step up their bow building skills would do well to spend some time with Dan Santana at one of his workshops. Dan's technical understanding of bow making and skill as teacher and a craftsman are second to none.

That was a damn fine Bow you made Dan is definitely a master craftsmen and a gifted teacher I absolutely love the way he's set up his shop, definitely one of my favourite creators I'm happy to learn he does workshops, if I'm lucky enough to get over to the US, I'll definitely look Dan up. I wanna do a class with Clay Hayes as well

Omg the bow is just gorgeous .. what he did with that Osage stave was amazing. Do to my slight ADHD one thing I can say about your channel is I have learn how to try slow things in my head take a step back and visualize how the outcome will be in the end of making my own bows and I got to say I had a few hiccups but the final results were awesome thanx again Dan
What a gorgeous bow and piece of Osage Orange. That bow seems to shoot as fast as 50lb. bows I have built...or maybe faster...amazing! Thanks Dan

The bow came out sweet! Also the magnets set in your bench for your scrapers is a great idea.

Always very inspiring to watch your videos and lessons within. Question: What is that target bag made of and filled with?
The bag is an old pool cover I got from the trash and it’s filled with old towels, sheets, and clothes. You can also find similar bags at farming supply stores for filling with leaf litter and that kind of thing

Did your student source his own stave or did you sell one to him?
The class comes with a whitewood stave but if you use osage or yew i’ll source one at market price
How thin would you say you could go for the tip thickness for a 50 lb bow? I mean where the string wraps around in the groove? I have an osage bow with 1/4" thick at the groove, with a little less than an 1/8" antler overlay (at groove). So total a little less than 3/8" between belly side and back of groove. Is this too thin?
That seems fine depending on the details. I don’t like to give prescriptive one-size-fits-all dimensions since I don’t even usually know what dimensions I make. I just remove all the wood that doesn’t need to be there, and test the strength by hand.

@@DanSantanaBows Thanks for the reply. Yeah I don't usually know either lol. I got a new dremmel tool to use for the string grooves, and naturally I got carried away. I think I might recall that piece in TBB. Thanks for the good advice
@@VSci_ If it feels sturdy enough to hold the force of your draw weight without scary wiggling then you’re good. Or just throw it up on the tiller tree. If it’s a problem it will show itself there
@@DanSantanaBows Yeah I'm just hesitating lol. I actually just checked it with calipers and it is 3/10" thick x 4/10" wide. It's a wilcox duoflex bamboo backed osage. I might legitimately shed tears if this one breaks. What I might do is sand the antler down to the groove and laminate another overlay (maybe osage) on top. Might look good too

Do you only use the trunk of the tree i was trying to use a branch to make a boomerang messed it up
For the most part. Branches can require more skill and are harder to dry without warping or cracks

I thought the late wood was darker in color than the early wood. In your drawing I guess it shows the opposite. Kind regards Max
It depends on the wood and lighting. The surefire way is to look for porous growth
Selecting Osage orange bow staves
What ways can I get Osage orange?I’d like to learn to make bows and I hear that in East Texas there is osage orange, and that is where I am(Well more like south east is where I am) but there is none on my property.I would prefer to make a bow straight from the tree instead of having to buy a stave.How can I get osage orange?
It grows in hedges along old farmland. You can try asking a landowner, a surprising number may be willing to help since some might see it as a pest. You can also try asking a local arborist to let you know if they cut any

Do you need to oil this bow.
You don’t strictly have to buy any finish can add some moisture protection and it will look good. Use whatever finish you already like
Flip that draw knife bevel side down and he'll be good to go.
Depends on the knife. I do it both ways and teach both ways and let him pick
