When this song was written in the 1950's, the Grapevine was a road from Los Angeles North to Bakersfield, over the mountains. The Hwy was 99. It wound through the mountains like a Grapevines at the bottom of the hill. The highway was 3 lanes, a Northbound lane, and a Southbound lane, and a lane in the middle for passing from either direction. It was called the Suicide Lane. That is how the Cadi passed him. Overdrive is another gear usually used on cars in the 1950's. This song was from the 1970's. Like 1972 I believe.
Here is a question. How many of you ever put your foot down on the pedal of a Lincoln? My brother had a 98 and we put a new engine in it. Brother let me play and step on that gas. Like he knew the effect it would have on me. To this day, the only other car that had that much power was my dad's Cadillac. Like a jet taking off. People, if you don't know you can't even imagine. Big ass car with a big ass engine to back it up so it ain't trash talk. Dude in a Mustang was rolling alongside of us one day and brother tells me to floor it. I give it a little and he grabs my knee and mashes it down and says " I said floor it son". We left that boy in the dust. I hate to use the LOL but every time I think of that I do. That was a fun car. I always think of it when I hear this song.
If you never drove one you can't know the joy of it. Fast and stable because of the size. The second you feel that pedal your brain says Oh My God!
This song reminds me of my dad telling about his time drag racing back in the day.
This is a TRUE classic.
Great story song. When I started listening to this song, I used to think of myself as driving the car. Now I think of myself as the father! 😂
my pa was from this generation he drove his modified corvette in the 50s on the autobahn at 130
Good reaction. Another song in a similar style is "Beep Beep (Little Nash Rambler)" by The Playmates
No Hook.
No Choirs.
Just straight story telling.
Do you know Convoy by CW McCall ?
Another great classic.
Wolf creek Pass too.
What a banger
This song will make you drive fast
I love this song!
When you laughed I laughed. Credits were wrong though. Not written by George Thorogood. He was a toddler when that was written. Charley Ryan.
BTW, the full name of the band is,
Commander Cody and The Lost Ship Airmen.
Try C.W. McCall, Convoy, and Wolf Creek Pass, you won't be sorry,.
had a camaro going down the highway when a black chevy pickup passed me had a sign on the back window you just got passed by a girl lol had to pass her fast
You make me laugh, which isn’t easy.
Thid id actually the second sond about this affair!
The first one isn't quite as engaging as this one so not many know about the first...
What fun!
This is legit 🔥🔥
Who else first heard this on Dr. Demento?
Fast for its time?
Check out the live version by Bill Kirchen (AKA The Twangbangers)
