    $385 apiece for these same Hella lights from Schmiedmann out of Denmark. Arrived in Arizona in THREE days, via FedEx (an uncharge from their standard DHL shipping, which is much slower but not much cheaper). I now have them on my M5, they're spectacular when fresh and new.

    Fun fact: there’s not an LED in the corner of the US spec facelift headlights. It’s the halo bulb that lights it up using fiber optics.

    Cutting that connector was brave - I cringed when you did that! Results were worth it though.
    I didn't want to buy new headlights for my 2001 540i but the adjusters had crumbled to dust and the xenons were pointing at the ground. I actually bought the aluminum adjusters and changed them myself. First one took 3 hours and my wife was not pleased having a grungy old headlight in her oven, but it worked! Putting back together all that crispy old BMW plastic was not very satisfying.

    I got xenons from a 2001 530ia at a junkyard, I put them in my 98 e39, everything’s good except the auto leveling plug. Mine doesn’t have the wiring for it. I was thinking using my DEWALT battery and two cables and powering the auto level unit to make them go up then stay like that.

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  4 роки тому +1

      Only cars that came with xenon lights from factory will have the leveling wiring, module, and sensors. Don't try the Dewalt truck, you'll probably mess something up. Just use the manual adjusters on the headlights to aim the lights were you want them. There are two plastic screws on each headlight that can be turned with either a phillips head screwdriver or allen key to raise and lower the lights, and move them left and right.

      DRLs (your brights on low power) have to be coded off. That is a feature that is coded 'on' or 'active' in your LCM (light control module). A BMW dealer or independent shop can do this for you.

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  2 роки тому

      That little orange corner light? Wow, I've never seen those go out. I'm not sure if they're replaceable or not, is there perhaps a small access hole on top of the headlight?

    • @jeff11030
      @jeff11030 2 роки тому

      Yes, the orange corner light. My right side is out. I can't see any access near the turn signal socket. And I don;t see a way to remove the amber plastic outer cover. I have not removed the entire headlight assembly. Is it a bulb or LED? (I ask that question because you said you never saw one go bad.) Would you know the proper name for that bulb's location? I'm stumped.

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  2 роки тому

      @@jeff11030 The lens does not come off, at least reasonably. People say baking the headlight in an oven will soften the glue that holds the lens on, but I never recommend that. I think it is an LED... maybe inspect the wiring? Though this wiring may be internal to the headlight itself. I don't know the name of the location, though I would call it the side marker light.

    • @E39Source

      I have never done this myself... but I think that the ballasts is all you'll need. You may need to re-code the computer to understand that it has xenons... but you can do that with a laptop with XP and a cable if you're smart and careful with it. You won't have leveling lights, but you can adjust them where you want them with a screwdriver.

      Having the connectors form a 2001+ car will help greatly. You can split the two positive voltage wires between the turn signal and halo (use a volt meter to determine which is which) and then split (share) the ground between the two using the pigtails from the donor.

    My m5 has depos on atm and i want to do same as ryan and go propper oem.
    In this vid you show the swapping of all the gubbins. What light units have you got?
    I can only find xenon kits that come complete with ballasts and they are rather expensive.
    Anyone know if the halogen lense units can be used and whats needed to fit xenon stuff to them.

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  6 років тому

      And you are updating from pre 2001 lights to 2001+ lights? The new style lights don't have double-filament bulbs. So thats why all of the wiring needs to change. Old setup used one filament as parking lights and another filament as turn signals. You need to split the first filament to the halos and the second filament to the new signal, and share the ground wire, as this video demonstrates.
