  • (Sweet up and Down)The Lillywhite Sessions (LWS) is a collection of songs recorded by Dave Matthews Band in 1999 and 2000 and produced by Steve Lillywhite. The songs, recorded by the band as a follow-up to their 1998 album Before These Crowded Streets, were ultimately scrapped by the band. This is frequently attributed to pressure from RCA executives to wrap up the sessions and release an overdue (per contract), upbeat album (the LWS were considered on the darker side by RCA).[by whom?] Upon abandoning the album-in-progress, Dave Matthews was assigned to work with producer Glen Ballard who, in association with Matthews, wrote the album Everyday in just ten days. This contrasted with the band's prior style of writing, which included significant collaboration between the band members in the studio. The recordings later emerged on the internet shortly after the release of Everyday, and created controversy among fans as well as the music industry, which was early in its campaign to curb illegal file downloads. The Lillywhite Sessions were never released.

Actually, not all of these songs made the album. Specifically: Sweet Up and Down, JTR, and Monkey Man. Furthermore, many of the tracks lost a lot of the "jazzy" sound that was recorded on these sessions when moved to Busted Stuff. Nearly all the tracks were further reduced in time, some by as much as two minutes (Kit Kat Jam).
I think that the LWS have far better energy than what came out of the Busted Stuff re-recordings.

@oscarthegrouch027 dude i really feel you on that, these recordings sound great but if you see who steve Lillywhite is you can tell why him and dave arent cool. Lillywhite is good. but he goes against everything i like about dave. you can see its all about the paper to him and he puts on this big fake ass front to act like its not. just my oppinion on the situation be happy with what came out but dont get greedy
