  • PaleyFest LA 2021 sponsored by Citi and Verizon. Stars and creatives of Apple TV+'s Ted Lasso (Bill Lawrence, Jason Sudeikis, Brendan Hunt, Brett Goldstein, Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Phil Dunster, Nick Mohammed, and Jeremy Swift) gather with moderator Patton Oswalt at PaleyFest LA 2021 to celebrate their show. Topics include: Sudeikis's (Ted Lasso) initial pitch for the show, and how Lawrence was shocked by the comedy's "surprising emotional depth and pathos"; Sudeikis having found inspiration for complex comic characters from the BBC version of "The Office"; the benefit of cutting more jokes than storylines as the episodes progressed; why the cast feels like a theatrical company; Dunster's secret for playing the off-putting Jamie without judgment; Temple (Keely Jones) and Waddingham's (Rebecca Welton) reaction to the writers' refusal to pit female characters against each other; and why Lawrence's children prefer the show to his earlier hit series, "Spin City."

Obviously, Jason Sudeikis has as high an EQ as he does an IQ. However, I wonder if anyone, even Jason Sudeikis, could have predicted how identifiable and beloved the Ted Lasso character could/would become. There have been appealing iconic characters on other excellent TV shows, but I can honestly say that no character is more admirable and inspiring, and has had more positive impact on viewers than Jason Sudeikis/Ted Lasso. I truly hope this show keeps going beyond the originally envisioned 3 years. It feels like they're just getting started. I want more.

This absolutely the most deep, inspiring Ted Lasso interview on UA-cam and I've listened to about 35 of them. Patton was far more intellectual than I knew he could be.

I love that their characters are all part of one team working together, loving and supporting each other (even Roy and Jamie). And the cast and crew are like one family who love and support each other just because of who they are. When we see the, together they are just Ted Lasso in real life. If you haven’t t seen it, you should look for them being interviewed by a journalist after the FA Cup who didn’t realise who they were and just messed about as their characters

"What Ted Lasso would do in this situation?" is a great question to add in our routine. lol

Funny how Patton mentioned Brad Bird, one of my favourite scenes from Ted Lasso is the team watching The Iron Giant and Ted saying that around the 74 minute mark there's going to be a room full of grown men crying.

I felt Roy was like a lot of athletes. All they know is the sport they play and Father Time is advancing on them.

I forget this show was supposed to be a comedy. Its funny as hell but I'm not used to the idea that comedies have so much meat and potatoes

It would have been great if, during one of Jason's close-up moments during this discussion, Sassy entered the room and started walking around not realizing she was viewable on-screen, y'know, just eating a cup of yogurt or something...

The last time a show featured women who weren't harping on each other all the time was parks and recreation. This show kind of reminds me of it in some ways.
